  • The best CPU for laptops was the Ryzen 9 5980HS but now with the 2022 rollout of Zen 3 there's the Ryzen 9 6900HS. But with these new laptops, prices have also increased so with everything else being equal, are the latest 2022 gaming laptops actually worth it or can you stick to a 2021 model?

Those battery life improvements look really interesting. I'd like to see a detailed exploration of that + the new integrated graphics, because those are the real selling points of this generation. Looking forward to non-chonky 14" everyday laptops that can also do AAA games at 1080p60. That's the dream.

      That battery isnt while gaming.
While gaming, the difference isnt going to be that much since itbwas gpu thats hoarding all that power anyway.

Gaming will significantly reduce those batt life numbers. Also the performance will tank as well. I agree though I can’t wait for the day that we can have almost parity of performance on battery power and while plugged in. Add great battery life on top of that and it would be incredible. Apple does it with performance being the same on battery and plugged in but we all know they aren’t good for gaming.

Last year, a few "small non-gaming laptops" had RTX 3050Ti (e.g. Asus VivoBook Pro 14X). Gaming on 680M perform closer to entry-level MX570 than 3050 because Nvidia's game drivers are far more optimized to take advantage of the hardware.
So don't buy this expensive iGPU hoping to play AAA on low settings, instead get $800 MX570 or RTX3050 "ultrabook". A 6800U will cost a minimum $1500.

    • @andrewd3899

Frankly, I don't really care about battery life while gaming. If I'm gonna be playing a game, 90% of the time I'm going to be plugged in anyway. I would like a laptop that has great battery life while doing Office, Web, UA-cam, etc., and then when I do plug it in, works well enough for recent games at reasonable quality.

@@blue4059 I guess you do have a point. Still MX550 laptops aren't always the easiest to fine, but you're right in that if it's between, say, a 5600H + MX550 or a 6800H without a dGPU, the former would make more sense, provided it actually is cheaper. I have the feeling that the average HP Pavilion, Dell Inspiron, ASUS Vivobook, or Lenovo Ideapad/Thinkpad-E with a 6800U will end up being cheaper and more available, though.

I honestly see more benefit to have the Igpu, than to not. It helps with diagnostics for one, gives you access to way more ports for more displays. And you can get in some off the side game or render time. Hell. Modern APU's make for great little MAME boxes. They run just about anything.

Thanks for the nice comparison! I want a convertible with good CPU performance but also with a good efficiency. Today i'm not gaming (i have selled my GTX 1060 for 1 year because i got nearly the same price like i had bought it in 2016^^), but in my study i'm programming in C, Matlab and Python and i'm using simulation software like LTspice or i'm using other engineering software. I's important to me to get a small and powerfull convertible, so now I have booked the Rog Flow X13 with the 6800HS but without any dGPU. I don't like the gaming design, but the X13 is not so excessive. HDMI for expanding the display in the office of my institute or the USB-A for a lot of measurmentperiphery is also import for me. I hate to be in the laboratory and suddenly i notice that i have to go back into the office for the adapter. (Sometimes i will need a ethernet adapter). Additional the X13 is now the first convetible with a Ryzen 6000 yout can get in Austria. Also Asus has anounced, that the lefth USB-C connector has hardware specs for USB 4.0 and they will bring a softwareupdate, so i will get 40 Gbits (Thunderbolt 3).
Maybe the components in the X13 could be more optimised for efficiency, but it's an gaming machine so i think Asus has slightly optimised the system more to performance but not to much, e.g. it has LPDDR5 instead DDR5 like the G14. Maybe in static idle and browsing tests it will not be better than a 1260p but in real working flows e.g. when webex and onedrivesync is running in the backround or if you are coding or building a simulation model and frequently you are starting to compile or to simulate then i would like to think, the Rembrandt is much better than AlerLake in efficiency! Additional the RX 680M has more performance, there is an 120 Hz touchdisplay with 100% RGB and 500 nits and the cooling system is for an 13 inch thin convertible really good. Currently i think the X13 is the best all-day and all-purpose convertible you can get. You have to consider that the touchpad is not so big, but a little bit you can compensate it with the touch display. Please consider, now the OLEDs are comming. They are really nice, but consume up to 50% more battery then IPS models.

Tiger Lake or Alder Lake. A well tuned i7-11800H could in theory beat the 5900HX with an easy adaptative undervolt, and the 5900HX is faster than the 5980HS.
No IPC increase from Zen 3 to Zen 3+.
The i7-11800H is a very efficient chip too, colder than the Alder Lake mobile i7 and uses less power. It seems like the HP Omen 17 does a great job keeping the i7-11800H going strong in a cinebench R20 run and can beat the 5900HX, both CPUs at stock here.

So essentially, it just isn't worth it for me to upgrade anytime soon even though I am in fact a heavy CPU user. Mainly because I usually am plugged in. I really appreciate these type of comparisons. I might revisit this depending on the capabilities of the next generation of GPUs paired with this new generation of CPUs. Specifically the PCIe bandwidth can be important to me. As to why I have a laptop instead of a desktop, other than at the time I bought it that were really no options for desktops, I travel a lot I need something that can be portable. So in my case, you've given me what I need for my next purchase decision, which is probably going to be another 6 months to 10 months in the future, given the information you've given me here

LTT already did a video explaining how you do not need the high-end CPUs at all to get higher fps. You may get more, but not a noticeable amount. Aside from battery life, the 680M iGPU in the 6000H series Ryzen CPUs is a real attractive add. Sure, in a gaming laptop that's usually less important. But considering the 680M iGPU trades blows and can even outperform the 1050ti mobile GPUs, it's not something to ignore. As new thin and lights with the 6000H have come, and they are some really nice productivity machines, that can still hold themselves well in some fairly demanding titles.

i7-11800H is a better processor in the HP omen 16, on par with the 5900HX, faster single core, no thermal throttling in a cinebench run (source is notebook check), undervolting and partial overclocking support also helps, plus RTX3060 mobile. It stays colder than the 5800H too, 144Hz screen.

I’ve been debating getting a new MacBook Pro but the gamer in me also wants to play (with good specs). Any tips on what to buy is hugely appreciated. I already have a decent PC back home in England but now I’m currently living abroad I want a laptop I can both game and work off.

The USB 4.0 alone is a big enough deal for me to go with AMD 6xxx over 5xxx, because USB 3.x doesn't have any Thunderbolt interfacing, but USB 4.0 has TB3. That opens up a LOT of dock options that simply are not possible with USB 3.x. Not just due to bandwidth differences but also capability differences. For me namely around mutliple-display outputs over a dock that actually use the laptop GPU (APU?) and not some shitty USB GPU in the dock itself (which always runs like crap). I really think that Hardware Canucks overlooked this noteworthy aspect!

I agree, in the gaming universe at least. There´s no reason to game with the top CPU´s... However, there are some uses that need a lot of computing power from the processors... In my case, I work with tons of data science and probabilistic models that take WEEKS to analyze in normal CPU´s. Of course, the difference between a regular processor from previous generations and the newest will probably not reduce WEEKS to HOURS, but I think they´ll improve significantly the efficiency of a workflow from very rigurous tasks like are mine.

This battery test is inaccurate for a number of reasons. Power of dGPU affects battery and the 6800S compared to 3050 Max-Q is more draining when in idle. G14 also has a power-hungry 14" QHD display and its CPU is tuned at a higher cTDP, compared to the X13.
