Last yr's animated TMNT: Mutant Mayhem had a similar $28m domestic opening. Beetlejuice like Ghostbusters seems like a franchise that just plays a lot stronger domestically than abroad. Well done Rebel Ridge on being able to build on its strong WK 1 numbers on Netflix!

I think the thing that we’ve seen with animated movies is that just because they open low, doesn’t mean they will stay low. The problem with Transformers is that Wild Robot is opening soon, and I know people who are actually super excited about that movie who don’t normally go to the movies.

Transformers One should be a lesson to everyone that even when you release a great film that’s well received it’s not always gonna do well at the box office. Even with it taking the franchise back to the roots and formula of what made it work back in the old days I guess they just didn’t market it well enough to an audience that could consume it in droves. I think the release date also was not smart for the film given its target audience is all back in school right now.😅

I think a fair comp for the Transformers animated film is Clone Wars. A traditionally live action franchise (at least film wise) jumping to animation that failed to come near the series’ normal performance. It just doesn’t appeal to the core audience, although it might do well in the long run if it catches on with home viewing. I expect the animated LotR film to perform just as poorly, even if they do seem to be targeting an older audience.

I work in a cinema in Canada. It was very frequent that when people walked past the Transformers One poster in the hall, a remark would be made about how it looks lame and they weren't going to go see an animated movie and it should be live action. I think part of it is they've just changed the franchise perception over the past almost 20 years now and to casual movie goers, an animated film felt like a step back

    • @SplatterInker
      @SplatterInker 2 дні тому

😂 I find it funny that people who enjoyed a children's franchise in live action somehow feels like a cartoon is more immature?! People are funny. Can only imagine they don't like being reminded that they're watching children's toys and a children's franchise... because that would mean they're not quite so mature as they like to make out. 😅
It's ok to enjoy animation guys. You're not a loser for enjoying innocent or family friendly things. You can be manly and still appreciate WALL.E. 🙄
Personally, I'm just not a massive Transformers fan and I haven't watched one of these in cinema since the second Michael Bay film so... that group of people were unlikely to rush out for this film.

Agreed. The audience in love with the Bay films which never got into wider transformers lore are not going to respond to or follow other new takes (or older takes) on the franchise. Thank you.
Dan does a great job reporting on franchises. Do you think some films should have footnotes or asterisks?
    1. Should animated films be tracked separately?
    a) Like, Transformers, Spiderverse, and Star Wars.
    b) Where should the most recent Lion King and the upcoming sequel be placed?
To be live action, or not to be live action, it doesn't matter. We love how it triggers Dan. 😂
    2. Should standalone films be included or at least have an asterisk.
    a) Like Logan, Bumblebee, Rogue One, and Hobbs and Shaw?
    b) How about franchises of franchises' sequels like Venim and Morbius?
    3. How about franchises being blended together in one film?
    a. It's bound to happen for the MCU and X-Men franchises.
    b. Dan, on his own, just combines all Marvel franchises into one.
Why? Too much work or he's losing it. Just kidding.
Too complex, my brain feels like it's tripping.
    4. Where should a standalone film be placed if the standalone actually becomes canon, a prequel to a future film?
    a) Like if and when Shaw and Hobbs rejoin a future F&F sequel and some S&H plot line is important to the new movie?

Marketing failed Transformers One. Kids and teenagers should have been all over it. Hopefully it will face slow drops. Cool video.

Moana is always on the charts and it makes me think that unless it’s really terrible Moana 2 could be a monster hit if Disney doesn’t mess up somehow

The style of animation chosen for a movie matters. A lot. Transformers did not choose wisely imho. Which is a shame, because otherwise it is a good movie

Hi Dan - Love the show and watch every week. Question - Why do you no include the worldwide totals in your charts? You do worldwide weekly but not the total for the run like you do for the domestic. As a fan from the UK it would be great to see. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Sorry for the delay in watching and commenting. Great episode Dan. Still can't believe Prison Break's comeback in popularity. Can't wait for your review of Megalopolis.

Not a good marketing campaign for Transformers One.

I remember seeing a comment with a huge amount of likes that said “Haters have been real quiet since the second trailer came out”
Sorry to sound toxic but us “haters” who didn’t go to see the movie have been majorly disappointed by this franchise lately and chose not to see it. I’m glad people like it but for a lot of us it’s just not the type of TF movie we were hoping for. But once again to those who love it and aren’t toxic children, rock and roll and I hope you love what comes next

"Howl's Moving Castle" is easily one of my all time favorite movies, I've seen it many, many times and the art remains stunning.
because I love the movie so much I've also read the book it's based on, but the book is surprisingly different. could easily be two entirely different stories, just sharing the most basic plot points.

Dan, why not include the total accumulated gross as well in the worldwide listings? Would provide context on a film's overall performance.
