One minor contrasting opinion to a statement on Boudicca, perhaps she was a brutal leader because the Romans took everything from her...they flogged her...they RAPED her DAUGHTERS...her own children...this wasn't just leading, it was revenge....perhaps had she won, her leadership would have been different than her revenge. Perhaps, Great Britain would have become something entirely different, sure, but it wouldn't necessarily have been bad... because to Romans were brutal too...never ever forget the slaughter they wrought across some of the largest swaths of the world ...just because they created some good things didn't mean they were good...just because Boudicca was brutal in her revenge doesn't mean she was bad....

No nation, culture, people in history were ever entirely good throughout their history and all have plenty of "evil" deeds in their past. You either have an empire of you're a part of someone elses....and it's never going to be any different.

"In the midst of battle, when chaos reigns and fear grips the heart, remember this: the true battlefield lies within oneself. Conquer the doubts, the temptations of weakness, and the tumult of emotions. For it is not the external foe that defines victory, but the inner strength and resilience of the warrior's spirit." - Marcus Aurelius

Viviamo in pace 💕 Namastè 💕

The ancient Romans were a vile race of bullies that massacred, tortured and persecuted every settlement and civilisation they came across. When they weren't doing those things they were killing their own family members and neighbours. Certainly, we can admire their engineering and building skills, but as human beings they seemed to have been unnecessarily cruel at every turn.

Extremely interesting and Mary Beard makes that so. But, the bit about the ice from the Greenland, explained as the bubbles were the result of greenhouse gas caused by Rome, doesn't cut it for me. For one, the jet stream and earth rotation doesn't make that a logical assumption. Further, there have been mini glacial periods with the last climaxing in 1875 and warm periods with the last one in the 1400's, a cool period about 500 years prior, another warm period about 500 years before that. At the time Greenland was last "discovered" and inhabited, it was in a warm period sufficient that people came to farm. When it was so "suddenly" vacated, it had become too cold to inhabit. These oscillation of the planet on her axis cause these differing climates and are so far apart and slow in bringing about a change that then seems rapid, affects also lives of living organism, plants and bacteria that end up in water run off causing decay, releasing methane as little bubbles in water that then freezes. To blame a civilization, down wind is ludicrous. If scientists want to go that route, America and Asia would have had more influence on Greenland's ice bubbles. But, it in truth it is likely more the increase in living organism during warm periods that then disappear from existence during mini-glacial periods. Climate does change and it always has but not for the reasons that are currently being used to manipulate economy. The next warm period climaxes in 2396 give or take. We've been warming since 1875.

Apparently not. Winning ancient battles was "strength of numbers, attacking from behind , starving your enemies out and luck"? Caesar COULD have eyes on the entire battle field because they used scouts and runners and well yes those things did happen it's a bit more than that otherwise anyone could do it. Anyone did not............the greats won battles consistently for a reason. Another person with a lot of education and no critical thinking skills it would seem. Caesar(who she's talking about when making that quote) is literally the prime example of winning battles consistently having NONE of those things going for him lol.

Then the dumb comment about the aquaducts..........suggesting they were just pomp and show lol. You have to keep the flow or water at a minor minor pace over miles and miles of terrain since water doesn't flow up hill..........meaning if you across a valley YES you need those huge aquaducts to maintain the flow properly. What a doink lol. The aren't there for show. They didn't have the fossil fuel age to power massive water pumps.

Kind of light on facts and heavy on Mary. Implying that Scipio's invasion was not needed, just a flex? Hanibal had been laying waste to the Italian peninsula for 10-15 years, and was still there when Scipio made his gambit? And then the bit about 'a senator' said 'Carthago delenda est'. How about treat the audience like adults and name that senator, he wasn't exactly obscure, his name was Cato. Overall I'd say this is fine for middle schoolers, but even then I think its a very lightweight documentary.

AFTER WATCHING DR. BEARD'S ROMAN DOCUMENTARIES, AND HEARING HER REMARK UPON "Rome's Invisible People", I catch myself wondering about those sorts whenever I stop into
A STARBUCK'S or BURGER KING. But if I contemplate my own profession-I am a professional jockey-and a winning one, at that. Last year I finished "in the money"-if not an outright WIN in every race I rode. Would I have been a "Special Person" in Ancient Rome? Or an "Invisible Person"? Not that it bloody
    MATTERS. lol

Never did I expect the this Roman Empire to include Britain and Israel. I know I should watch this video again in it's entity and I will.... but, I need to get back to the present now so, I expect in a few days? And I must confess I never liked learning about history before so, wow.... thank you so much.... I guess Rome is the answer and certainly what I was missing out on!!

One of the best documentary about Rome I've ever watched, thank you!
Highly recommend the 1950's famous British travel writer H V Morton's book "A Traveller in Rome", he went deep dive into the eternal city, basically living like a local, sharing its history, architectures, different cultures/people of various neighborhoods, religious insights, & eating at hundred years old coffee/tea shops.
    I learned so much.
Rome really is an unique city that one can travel to so many times yet still finding new discoveries around the corners each time.

Wonderful programme, but Time Team fans will recognize the gorgeous orange pottery as Samian ware, the expensive stuff of aristocratic Roman villas. Given that, this is an enjoyable and interesting commentary.

Rome has never fallen. Rome is all of Italy today. The Catholic Church is as much a part of Italy as the Vatican.
The Catholic Church tends to a flock of parishioners that exceeds 1 billion. If every parishioner gave 1 dollar in offerings on Sunday that would be 1 billion dollars. 52 weeks a year would be a gross income of 52 billion dollars.
Rome indeed has certainly not fallen. The influence is felt far and wide.

*_2:49:18_**_ Look at this disgusting display. As a person who identifies with the more Aryan side of history ie the Medo-Persian Empire as well as the Parthian and sassanid empires, nothing can describe my absolute disgust to this vulgar piece of art. Though the image is about the conquered people, it says more about the Romans or perhaps more accurately, the Greeks (as this was made by Greeks) point of view or interpretation of wars and conquest as a display of sexual dominance rather than a battle for resource. However what is painstakingly clear to me is that you can see how they push this agenda, they stress the fact that they conquered these people, perhaps because they are themselves self-conscious about their own submission to the Medo-Persian Empire centures earlier, a time when they would've been the conquered. Perhaps this is how the Hellens saw the way Persians treated them in the 6th century to 3rd century BC. Nevertheless this was made in the Roman empire and this is Certainly "Absolutely typical Roman behavior" _**_11:00_**_._*

Let's recall that Palestine quite successfully lived as an openly monotheistic state under Imperial Rome and also established a prominent ancient temple in the city of Rome. Romans didn't have a big problem with it because the religion wasn't spreading across the empire. That is why Christianity posed a threat generally but Judaism only posed a threat when it momentarily became aligned with political independence/separatism (Zealotry). Perhaps the rise of Christianity ended up provoking a new wave of anti semitism during the Pax Romana.

Rome generally did not have a problem with other religions. They only has an issue with any religion or institution or individual if they undermined or considered themselves superior to the Emperor, Senate and the People of Rome. The issue with monotheistic regions was that they considered their God master of everything which contradicted with the Roman Emperor . its was capital punishment cos it was treasonous as far as Romans were concerned. It just goes to show blind belief on any side ends up with innocents being massacred in Gods name or some Emperor or Tsar or Fuhrer or Politburos name.
