    That is an awesome set up, thanks for sharing. I love Clazzio covers and have had a set in my silverado for 5 years. Based on how you use that small seat i would suggest that you put the cover on with the vinyl piece off. Then mark where your holes are, punch em out, and install the trim piece over the clazzio like factory. That way you dont risk ripping part of that cover eventually and when you want to pop the seats off it will be a much simpler process, you could probably get some small access holes for the bolts and fashion plugs if you were so inclined. For anyone else who has vinyl seats or any vinyl tonneau or root-top tent covers, Aerospace 303 protectant is the only product i use to keep the UV damage to a minimum.

    Awesome! I love the attitude that you can design and build specialized contraptions for compact, high performance camping and if needed, off-roading. Like to see more of your systems, adventures!

    Hey great vid, I just picked a 2010 trail teams, Mpg is bad already, so I think I will just use a ground tent, and that way I can leave the site and go do stuff, and hopefully not lose my spot or stuff,

    Oh another thing you should check for is a leaky roof from what I seen here on the tube is that FJC's are notorious for roof leaks along the welded seem . From what I understand is toyota thought welding was enough to seal the roof under the long rubber straps, mine is leaking at the front and I get a small puddle on my floor mat when ever it rains hard. Nice too it runs out from behind the dash by the cluster. all I need is a short there. then I can break the sound barrier.lol no speedo no tickee..lol

      So far no leaks in the roof but I appreciate the tip and will check for any future problems. Thanks for watching.

    What brand of seat covers are you using? They look pretty nice.

      Here is a link for the seat covers www.clazzio.com/car-leather-kits.php
      We have been very happy with these covers, they fit perfectly and most people that see them think they are stock leather seats.

    I can tell you from experience, never, ever leave home without full water cans. As far as the extra fuel, well, it might not make sense to drive on 1000's of miles of interstate with bombs strapped to an extremity. Probably best to fill those just before entering an area where you planned on the possibility of needing them.

    I put all my stuff on a trailer. Then I don't have to do anything but unhitch/hitch to get ready. Wishing I had a forklift tractor though.

    • @TheGillsExpeditionChannel
      @TheGillsExpeditionChannel  7 років тому

      I have seen the trailers with the tents on them and it really looks cool. Having a tractor with forks is kind of cheating!

      Trailers are nice, but require some forethought in town, parking-wise. I tow a Jumping Jack tent trailer up and down the West Coast with my FJ-40; stopping for coffee or a quick bite usually means finding a back-to-back parking spot. Awesome in the wilds though.

    I was randomly searching for roof tents and found your guys' video. Great setup an lovely family! Interested to see your other vids! I have couple random questions... Todd were you in the military? How'd you learn to do all of this? Excellent work! Also how many acres do you guys have there!? Amazing backyard!

      Thanks for the kind words. No, I have not been in the military. Most of the stuff I do is self taught. AKA trial and error. Thanks for watching. Todd and Lori

    Awesome video guys! I was just wondering do you guys run a dual battery setup for the inverter and fridge etc?

    • @TheGillsExpeditionChannel
      @TheGillsExpeditionChannel  7 років тому +3

      Yes. The second battery is a group 24 100 amp/hour deep cycle. The second battery is controlled with a National Luna dual battery controller and it works great.

    Looking forward to your trip videos again this year, and nice to see this new one today.
    And thanks to you, I pulled the trigger on the Eezi-Awn Bat 270 awning a few months back.
    The shop had to beef up my old BajaRack awning brackets to hold the weight of the Bat though, so no worries now.

      You are welcome.
      I did have to move my Rotopax cans down a few inches, as they way I had them before they would not let the awning swing arm pass unless I took the cans off.
      Now with them lower, no problems.

    I've been watching this video on and off since it first came out. since 2017, have you changed vehicles such as going to a 4Runner, to use for camping; or do you still have the FJ?

    • @TheGillsExpeditionChannel
      @TheGillsExpeditionChannel  6 років тому

      Still running the FJ. It works very well for us because we only have 3 people to haul. If you had more than that you would probably need a bigger truck. Thanks for watching. Todd and Lori

    Do you have to ever clean snow off your roof and if so I was wondering if a snow brush can fit under the roof rack? I have the stock roof rack and all winter I have to leave off the cross straps in order to clean snow off the roof. Otherwise it will turn into a big block that slides and bangs around. . Thanks may some day get the safari style if snow is no problem.

    • @TheGillsExpeditionChannel
      @TheGillsExpeditionChannel  7 років тому

      I have never had a problem with snow under the roof rack. The style of rack that I built has only two cross bars in the middle and so the roof is mostly wide open. Thanks for watching

  • @ryanharrison2135

    How does the extra weight on the roof effect the handling? How bad is the mileage? I get 18/20 with a 2007 now but I'm going for a rack with tent and 1 box. Thanks

    • @TheGillsExpeditionChannel
      @TheGillsExpeditionChannel  7 років тому +4

      You know that the tent is up there, but it only really effects the handling when you get a strong head or cross wind. The mileage depends on how fast I am driving. At about 65mph I get 16mpg but with strong head wind the mileage gets worse. Hope this helps.

    Can you provide a semi accurate weight for the tent, awning, rack basket, rear slide in box and all it's components? How much total weight does this add to your FJ?

    • @TheGillsExpeditionChannel
      @TheGillsExpeditionChannel  7 років тому +2

      I don"t know the exact numbers, so I will approximate the weights. On the roof: Tent=185#, Roof Rack=40#, Storage box=10#, Water storage bottle=3#empty each. In the truck: Rear storage drawers=60#, ARB Fridge=50#, Tables=5#each, solar panel=40#. All the misc gear like food, clothing, camera/video gear, and people is up to you and it is hard for me to guess. We did lots of off road exploration and never had any problems but most of the time we were on semi-soft and hard pack ground. My truck is stock suspension. Hope this helps. Thanks
