Local road with massive twists and turns, going 20mph over the speed limit in my 2016 Nissan Sentra SV. Was shocked it could handle it like it did. And yet on the interstate going through curves at the speed limit feels like it’s gonna roll over 🥲

I’m a fan of the K engine architecture. Small car, big (powerful) engine is easily done in a Honda because of the K. For something heavier like the HRV, the 2.0T and 10 speed would make me happy. Unfortunately, it would probably add ten grand to the price. Now the 1.5T . . . We can dream.

    • @jjacob25101

What the should do, is mske a Sport Touring, based on the Sport trim with the similar upscale features of the Civic Hatchback. Make the suspension tuning more performance oriented like the Si. Dual exhaust, and... the detuned Type R 2.0L Turbo engine from the Accord Sport, the the Si should have had, should have put that engine in the Si, and and put the present Si drivetrain in the Civic Sport Touring Hatchback and an HR-V version, of course, with an optional Si 6 Speed.
But, K-Tuner recently released a calibration for the N/A 2.0L engine the HR-V has for about $300 that brings horsepower and torque levels up to the non Si 1.5L turbo engine. They could tweak the calibration to be optimized with the HR-V.

2012 Honda CRV totally stock for me has an oddly similar feel. Very normal, not powerful or fast at all (takes about 3 miles of flooring it to hit 116mph lol, not that I’d know of course). However, when you push it, it’s comically more capable than you’d think in the corners. can slam into corners way way faster than it should be able to, if you slam the steering input and floor it locked in first the AWD starts pulling the rear around which completes if you let off throttle a bit. Have banged the rev limiter hundreds of times at this point (via first gear lock), 160,000 miles in still get a “this is in great condition” report from the services at dealership. Shockingly competent in snow. Glad to see the new ones haven’t lost the comically competent driving feel.

I think it’s par. 30ish mpg isn’t impressive but it also isn’t bad for a crossover that has this much space. I’d like to have seen the 1.5t in this because it would have more torque and likely capable of slightly better fuel consumption. This car doesn’t owe us too much at it’s price point so in the end it’s still a great package for a huge segment of buyers

@@TedwardDrives It's basically a Civic SUV, and the 6 Speed is already available in the Civic Hatchback with both engines, but even the regular 1.5L turbo with the Si 6 speed, which is supposedly better would be great, or the K-Tuner calibration for this engine that brings it up tonthe power of the 1.5L would be nice.
Being a 2022 Civic Si owner commenting so positive about the HR-V ride and handling is saying a lot, but I would believe you would have optimized OEM handling with the Sport trim with the 18" wheels/tires.
The Civic Sport trims traditionally have more stiffer performance oriented suspension tuning for the coil springs and sway bars, as a friend and others stated that the HR-V Sport feels like a Civic Sport with the same engine, with a little expected body roll on fast turns or curves, and good, but slightly lighter steering feedback compared to the Civic Sport.
I perceive they could have made the suspension stuffer and the steering feel heavier, but, I sense Honda engineers intentionally tuned the HR-V Sport suspension and steering this way to better complement the consumer demographic that would buy the HR-V, especially the Sport trim, which will probably be the most popular trim model.
I wondered whybthevwentbdiwn from the 235 series tires to 225, but I also believe this would make it more agile on handling, with less tire drag. If it's not a clearance issue, the 235 tires from the Civic Sport could easily be swapped and stiffer springs and sway bar and other suspension components, when they become available.
But, Honda did everything as is for a specific design snd purpose.
I wanted a Boost Blue Pearl Civic Sport Hatchback, but the Urban Grey Pearl HR-V Sport FWD would be even more perfect for what I need and want.

Tedward, or anyone that wants to respond: I’ve been a huge fan for awhile, I was wondering, as a 16 year old with a part time job making a few grand a year, what is one of the cheapest cars to buy these days that I can fix up/modify in order to have the most enjoyable experience possible (preferably a manual)? Love what you do bro! 💪
Edit: Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

A older civic si. Definitely would make an enjoyable first car. That is what I would get

Older Civic Si is always a good choice, but I'm gonna go on a limb here and say the 2005 generation (can't remember which gen it is) of hyundai elantra.
I drove one for a while and they come standard with a manual transmission, along with very surprisingly good handling. The engine's nothing special, but it can feel a bit punchy at times and with some mods I'm confident you could have a punchy little car. It's not gonna break 6.5 seconds to 60 most likely, but it's a fun little car.
The only gripe I have about it is that the 4 speed automatic as an option sucks.

      Honda fit
Its what the civic used to be but with modern safety amenities. And still fun to drive, and modify. Easy 40mpg to work too

This is borderline unsafe. Most highway ramps are quite short. Good luck with a 80,000 lbs. semi barreling down the road and you're stuck there looking at it in horror while your car goes nowhere.

Damn, all these new Hondas that come with so many high tech features standard is making my 2018 civic hatch sport look sooooo dated in comparison

In my opinion a man should always choose the car over a woman since if you let a woman dictates what type of car you should drive there is a strong indication that the woman is a possessive and dominant one. If she really cares about you and what you like she should listen to you and this is what a healthy relationship should be built upon. A dominant type of woman will never build a long lasting relationship with you unless you are beta male which in this case this is what you get. I am not saying that she must let you drive a Ferrari or Porsche 911 over something more practical but forcing you to drive a Hyundai Santa Fe or CRV over a Civic SI or Turbo Mazda3 is just unacceptable.

The Asian 2023 HRV looks much better with 177hp 1.5L turbo.

Too slow. Honda blew it not putting the 1.5L turbo in it. All the nice touch points and nice driving dynamics can't make up for the lack of power. I would rather they do what Chevy/Buick are doing with the 3 pot 1.3L turbo.

~140hp ~130tq with AWD? That sounds frustrating 😅 it definitely looks better than a lot of the competition though

I believe that was the 1.8L in the previous HR-V based on the Fit platform. The N/A 2.0L engine this has from the Civic is 158/140... AWD is same power, great drive train, but it does slow it down 1+ second for the 0-60.

  • @raiderfly

I’d take a Civic any day, this NA 2.0 is simply too underpowered. And that’s coming from someone driving a 1.8L Nissan Sentra which makes 20hp less than this lol

I’m surprised that this car doesn’t come with the 1.5t engine, the 10th gen civic hatchback comes with that engine standard. It’s great, nice amount of torque down low and plenty of passing power on the highway. I don’t know why Honda made the turbo engine a feature you have to pay for now

We just test drove this car, it is a very very slow and cheap feeling car. Probably the worst car we have ever driven. Feels very loose and bouncy on every tiny bump. Steering feels very very loose. Just feels bad all-around.

@@neil9658 That's crazy. It is severely underpowered. Even raising safety concerns when attempting to merge into traffic. This is a known issues and there are a lot of threads about it. The extremely weak engine has actually caused wrecks. The suspension is very loose and low grade. I mean I'm glad you like it, but it's very junky car. We went with a cx-30 amd it's not even close.
