The prices in the UK are far cheaper than in Australia though, cheapest MX5 I could find was about $7,000AUD and it had about 270,000kms on the clock, though you could get a decent one for 10K. The parts and labor costs would also probably be way higher here :(
***** Although a bit biased, they sure do put up a good show. Too bad they give out wrong price indications though. They make it sound way cheaper than it is in reality. (they have sponsors, unlike any other person daily driving an MX5...
Matt this video was brilliant!! That smile when you accelerated that mx5 was soo genuine I just couldn't stop smiling myself! More videos like this please! Loved it, can't wait to see the result! :]
Meister R coilovers have always been the suspension I choose, have used other brands in the past but these are the brand I have stuck with, have had a set on my car for over 4 years now and there still like new. Also they have one of the best customer service I have ever experienced
LOL! Here (Portugal), i just have to make 1km to get a dyno run for 35€ on a local tune shop...in UK ou USA will be the same, i have visit enought foruns to know that
Alex Folkner Sweet. I haven't looked for one around me lately. But I can't really justify having a NA as a toy yet. I'll wait until I'm done with college. Haha.
If you're after any performance from your MX5 then Nick at Skuzzle is by far the best person. Genuine guy, great laugh and there's nothing that he doesn't know about them. His work is honestly second to none.
MX-5s not expensive in the US, but not so unbelievably cheap as in UK. The only the you could get for 1K lbs in the US is a bad clunker or a hidden gem. 1k lbs approx $1300 in the US is pretty much nothing, a car that hopefully will run for a year if you are lucky. I can't imagine getting that MX-5 for under $2500 n the US.
Great video. Not that I don't enjoy the usual review videos this is exactly the type of video that enthusiast have a difficult time finding. Thanks Matt.
You guys are so lucky...that MX-5 would cost a minimum $8k here in Canada. One I looked at yesterday looked just like yours but had only 35k on it, guy wanted $12k for it.
When I was shopping for cars I actually ended up buying a used MX-5 over a used Boxter. Once I found out what a nightmare the Boxters are to work on, I'm really glad I made that choice. Never regretted the choice of a stock MX-5. Simple to repair, cheap to repair and it only cost me $4000. Best purchase ever.
I have the same supercharger on my 2003 and I made 200 at 8 psi. 171hp at 5 psi. I also use the Trackdog fuel and timing cards and AEM water/methanol injection because the summer temps get to 115° F here.
Nice to see some in the UK are now quoting rwhp (which is what a chassis dyno measures) and not extrapolating crank bhp and quoting it as gospel. Would be interesting to perform the same experiment using a TorSen LSD, bigger braked (including ABS), wider tyred 2001 onwards Sport model fitted with upgraded suspension bushes and a decent set of anti-roll bars (e.g. 1.125” hollow front, 12mm rear).
I upgraded my 92 Na with not too much difficulty using jack stands and brute force, all in all not too hard, the only part i am not going to atempt when i turbo mine this year is the clutch, that is beyond backyard shops i feel
Auto Express they sure are, I payed arround 6.000 € for an mx5 nb-fl from 2004 with about 124.000 km on it (that would be 4,727 British Pounds for an mx5 with 77.050 miles in Belgium, Also I can't find any supercharger under 2.819 British Pounds over here.
Even in 2019, the cheapest Miata I can find similar to his is going for about $4,000-5,000.... (though remaining examples have probably depreciated fully by now, and may be going up in price!)
A stiffer front sway bar would've been a good investment. The mx-5 sway bars are made to over-steer a bit out of the box, because it's more fun to drive like that. Having it tend to under-steer slightly however can improve your lap times and make the car more stable and less twitchy at corner entry. In any case a great and easy build for a fun track car and daily.
Yowzoe For hard driving in general I'd get the thickest one available to you for a good price. If you look into tubular sway bars you can even find ones that are up to 29mm thick and still save weight, but they're a little more expensive.
Nice... and I'm glad you did the first lap and tuning on a whole episode, unlike Motortrend with that Nissan that has been going on for months already and nothing...
The miata weighs 500-600 pounds lighter depending on model and has a shorter wheel base. At low speeds and normal driving, it's more fun regardless of price. Just like most people would agree a go kart is more fun than a car, that's a miata compared to almost any other car.
LlLnig now, some people with weak personalities feel better buying expensive cars, boost their ego in front of others, that’s another story, and I would agree, those people may be better with the s2000
Whacking a mega short ratio torsen in will improve acceleration and road based hoonery. Does make long cruises more of a pain but then thats not what it's for....
Dont you just love how his face turns bright red in happiness and excitement when he accelerates the mazda for the first time?
That face made this video and even put a smile on my face.
I love that supercharger whine!
That's why everyone needs a supercharger in their life.
It was the face of true Happiness
benpowersification Could not be said better
Matt still looks the same 6 years later, what a lucky person 😂
I'm in love with that supercharger whine
It literally sent shivers down my spine. I want one in my life so badly.
I have never driven both so I don't know which one I'd pick.
Same here... I need a supercharger in my life too! :D
In a tunnel the whine is louder than the exhaust. Its magic. :-D

September 2019 and this mx5 is still going strong and annoying nosy old ladies 😂
I am not particularly interested in what you think!

buy a mx 5 with 86,000 miles for $1,500?
please show me where
+Zenica Europe. lol
+Zenica English pounds not dollars
+needraintodrift 1000 pounds = 1500 dollars
***** you are right...my bad I thought Matt said 1500 pounds
Cameron Newman Those types of Miatas in Australia would cost me upwards of 8 grand.
What a way to use company's money to upgrade his own car.
Nice work if you can get it.

what about the cost of dyno runs that are not cheap easily spend another grand for that
donkykóng Are you serious? A dyno run can be made it about 30 bucks...
Yeah good luck with that why don't you go try see how far you get

Enjoyed the mechanics part, he seems like a really nice who knows his trade and enjoys it! Nice to see in this day and age
1000 pounds for an MX5 in the UK, so that about $1500 here in the US, people here want at least $3000 or more for a NB (Mark 2) Miata. :(
20000kr here in norway
I've found a few floating around for 1800-2000 here in Virginia. In pretty good shape too.
Alex Folkner Send some to me in NY. Everyone wants way too much even for ones in rough shape. (would prefer getting a fixer upper anyway)
I'm actually going to pick up an NA this weekend for $1500 for a daily while I build my rx7. Granted I have to make a trip about 3 hours north for it.
Alex Folkner Sweet. I haven't looked for one around me lately. But I can't really justify having a NA as a toy yet. I'll wait until I'm done with college. Haha.

That was the BIGGEST SMILE on MATTS Face EVER on this channel.

Going for the super charger: Damn good choise imo.

It amazes me how cheap these MX-5s are in the UK!
It doesn't amaze me.
because no1 outside of the Uk wants a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side :P
Benzintrinker ‘ there’s plenty of countries who drive on the right side of the road (that’s the left side of the road)

The NB miata is a quality car. The interior materials are on par with porsche boxter. Rock solid car.

thats because in the uk we have old lesbian women selling them and not caring how much they get from it

Looks like front sway bars for NAs range from 11mm to 21mm. Is bigger always better (for a hard-driving daily)?
Yowzoe
For hard driving in general I'd get the thickest one available to you for a good price. If you look into tubular sway bars you can even find ones that are up to 29mm thick and still save weight, but they're a little more expensive.
Back when MX5s were priced properly

I really couldn't care less if the S2000 is better than an MX-5, I would pick an MX-5 over an S2000 any day!
Never understood that argument. It performs better, but it's a step up in price too. What is there to argue about lol
+WowzaBoyz people who want miata over s2000 is broke people who can't afford s2000

Awesome episode Mat! I think next you should have replaced the old exhaust pipes. A more freeing flow one can gain you another 10hp or so.
a sticker also can gain you 5.8hp, I learned that from Top Gear S21E01
Xman Wang lol especially if they are stickers of your stereo or NOS
Most interesting idea but are you bonkers? Against a Boxter! 😀
You may be suprised how well it does.. look up curb weight for both cars. Power to weight ratio is a lot closer now.
EXCELLENT educational video my friend!!!! Thank you!
Am I the only one who now wants to buy a mx5 & put a supercharger on it looks fun dude
Mazda Miata smiles per gallon: I lost track 5 miles ago because I'm still smiling and laughing.
I NEED PART 2
I always trust the dark elf's input on miata's.
must have some great deals in the UK on MX-5s, because here in Canada, you're going to be paying $4k-6K for one of the first or second series.
Whacking a mega short ratio torsen in will improve acceleration and road based hoonery. Does make long cruises more of a pain but then thats not what it's for....
