We are on a super tight budget so that and an EMC8000 testing mic is about all we can afford at the moment. They are OK for A/B comparisons but, yes, not ideal. I think I will leave that to you for the time being until we start making some real money ;)
@@CustomCans I hear ya. Well bright side is it can actually be cheaper than a miniDSP ears for an IEC ear simulator. Give me a shout if you ever wanna go that route.
@@DMS3TV That sounds interesting, any advice on parts to build our own would be greatly appreciated. Or... if you have some good ideas for building a sensibly priced testing rig, We have a decent workshop and a team of product designers and makers if you fancy doing a colab on something
I want them, need a closed back in my collection, but I find it impossible to tell a better joke than 1266s sounding right ;-). Cheers mate, love your guides on midifying cans, keep up the good work!
Would love these. I am relatively new to the audiophile hobby, I am already hooked, spent too much money and struggling to justify any of this to friends, family and at times myself. Love it.
I'm honestly equally excited about the cable, would love to see what it can do to some high-end cans. And hey, if it's not an improvement, it'd be an amazing strap for my hipster tote bag. Can't let all that work go to waste
I've been teetering on getting a pair of enthusiast headphones for years now. Would definitely listen to more music, even more often. My life has been on the up and up, and the past 6 months of my life has been a breath of fresh air. Finally have a job where I have some comfort and sustainability. Recently found your vids after doing more research on headphones. Definitely here to stay. I would be over the moon if I won these headphones....but either way, I wanna dive more into the audio-sphere, and will definitely be watching you for a long time to come.
Hello, first time watching the live. I may need a closed back now that life is changing, I would love to get this famous fusion of the both. Anyway it was nice chatting, and good luck everyone.
If I win these cans I'll be sure to make a click baity video: gold Sundaras vs regular Sundaras, cork sniffin' if gold makes them sound more sparkly Love the channel, keep up the good work!
Greetings from Canada! I just recently discovered your channel as I’ve been researching my next acquisition and I’m quite interested in trying some planers. I really enjoy your deconstruction process you have great insight and curiosity about the whichness of why on how these phones all sound. Thanks! I’d really enjoy these and most importantly, I just realized my wife has caught up with me in number of headphones, which will never do! Lol. All joking aside thanks for putting your videos out. I really enjoy them. Cheers
hey, it's probably to late to enter the competition, but I still wanted to say that I really enjoy watching your videos. For one, they seem really honest and direct from the chest and you are clearly enjoying tinkering with cans. I watch your videos mainly because of your joy and excitment and I hope you can grow your channel and business this way. Having just bought the open Sundaras a month ago, I can't justify buying a new set of closed ones to my wife... On the other hand I do fancy an upgrade from my DT770. Life ain't easy... best wishes, BT
Love learning about the new closed back Sundara from your 2 reviews. Seems that Hifiman did improve a bit in term of build quality from your previous video. Love these type of videos that provide lot of new information. I would love to have a chance to win the give away (for once) and heard the headphones myself. Thank you.
I bought the Sundaras closed backs few days ago. Yes, their mid range is forward and out of the box they sound a bit shouty, but after I EQ'd them they sounded really good to my ears. Really happy with this purchase 🥳
@@chrisp9724 It realy depends on the source and the users ears... With my old Ifi Zen Can/Zen Dac Signature V2 setup I had to scoop out the mids with -2db from 400 to 4000hz, also boost the bass quite a bit, I am kind of a bass head lol. Now on my Aune S9c Pro DAC/Amp I am only boosting the bass and not touching anything else, on this DAC/Amp the midrange sound really good to my ears. It is interesting that I am EQ'ing more my Edition XS than the Sundara CB headphones though.
Great review, you are better at describing sound than you give yourself credit. I've been using the OPPO PM-3 for 6 years now as my portable closed back, the leather looks like it's gotten in a fight with a wolverine, she's beyond ready for retirement haha. I'd give it away but the receiver would have to be as good as you at refurbishing/modding headphones. It does hold a special place in my heart though, being the first closed-back planar ever, and it's now discontinued. I'll put it in my museum if nothing else.
Hi man, I've followed some of your he400 se mod videos, but didn't subscribe until now. I'd love to win these headphones. I loved the Sundara when I had a pair, but I sold them looking for something closed back. Haven't pulled the trigger on anything, but having a closed back Sundara to keep the dementors away while listening would be phenomenal. Also, they look trés chique, certain to impress my coworkers. 😉
I like to listen to classical music on my open back Sundaras when I'm sober, but I would love to listen to good techno music on the closed back Sundaras when I'm wasted ;) Thanks for the nice vid!
Mods seems fun, been interested to start my own modding since i bought a modded dt880 from the used market. but the fear of ruining the headphone is holding me back. I hope to complete a headphone mod of my own one day. Cheers anyway your videos are great.
An interesting review. Thankyou.. I have a pair of DT1990, but I found that they are not the best when used in a hospital bed. Too many requests... I was contemplating a pair of DT1770 or DT177x to resolve the issue, but now I have the Closed-Back Sundara's to consider as well. Well done with the custom artwork. The results would look good in pride of place in my loungeroom... I look forward to seeing future projects....
I am pretty certain the 1990 and 1770 have the same driver - if you are feeling brave, you could open up the 1990 and plug up all the holes on the inside with plasticine or something and pretty much end up with some 1770s
Well boy did I learn an amazing amount from your videos on headphones. Looking to massively upgrade the sound of my music and got an iFi hipdoc2, needed some quality headphones (to move up from the Sony WH-1000XM4's) and was recommended the upcoming Sundara Closed Backs in Australia, but not out here yet (we seem to be the last to get new stuff, clearly!!) so did the research, and learned a huge amount from you, thank you!!! Would I like to win, heck yes, and I love the design you developed on the headphone cups, sort of Incan/Buddhist mandala, very cool.
@@CustomCans Thank you, I wish me luck in the comp too, but hey, even if I don't win, I still value your vlog. It is very interesting to learn from. I use some of the ways you describe sound to become more aware of what I should be listening out for and to start to understand the way to break down the different aspects of the sound. Thank you. James
Quite new to the audio community but just found your channel not too long ago when looking up how to do a detachable cable mod on my 990's. Your channel has inspired the tinkerer inside me to start doing projects again. But to be honest a little too scared to attempt the detachable cable on my own, so I plan on buying one of your send in services as an early birthday present to myself! On a similar note I bought the DT990 premiums last year instead of the pros and would love to see it torn down on channel as well as your thoughts on the differences in sound, because the inner earcup seems quite a bit different for the premiums and would like to hear your opinions. Thank you for making such great informative content. I can dream of winning but regardless I hope these cans go to a good home!
Yes, I must get a pair in to have a play with at some point. We order beyer stock 3 months in advance so I won't be able to get some until Xmas now but I will try to get some then
A new pair of headphones is ALWAYS needed! I'm interested to see what the experience is like as someone who's only used Beyer cans. Also, a video going over cable braiding would be sick - I'm looking at modding my 770s to take a mini xlr connection and making some custom braided cables, but I've no idea how different braids affect cable length...
I work with young people In a care home and always go on about how much I love headphones. But I can never actually afford a good pair so I would love to waltz into work with these bad boys on and show them that I’ve finally made it in life. This isn’t a sob story but I would love to show these bad boys off I would wear them walking about the streets. If anybody asks then custom cans sorted me out . Love the channel.
I'd love those cans! *insert story here about how my life is terrible due to losing my job/pets/house/relatives (pick your favourite) and everything would be fixed if I got some fancy gold headphones for free* But seriously, those Sundaras look awesome. I haven't tried any planars before and I want to hear whatever it is that apparently makes planars so good. Been running with my AKG K371s for a couple years and I love them but I'd also love to be able to switch it up a bit without creating a sinkhole in my wallet :p
I want em mostly because the Sundara was my long time love and I finally got my hands on them, but unfortunately couldn't hold on to them for long because I didn't have a good enough amp. Now I've upgraded and am excited to not only come back to a long lost love, but also to an unique model *French kiss*
Thanks for the great 2 part review. I found your channel looking for a review of this very headphone and now I'm a subscriber a looking forward to more reviews. I would like to win the Sundara closedbacks so I can walk around sparking joy in peoples lives with the great look you guys have added to the headphones.
Thanks for comparing measurement graphs and speaking about it. It was a straightforward and not deceiving part. I liked it. Need to listen again for mine HiFiMan X4 and listen to your video again)
@@CustomCans I'm going to be honest. I haven't seen your channel before this video. Last 2 years I've became obsessed with audio/music. I've looked around your channel and it's really something else man haha. It looks like another thing I've looked at which is custom sneakers.
O.M.G, I've been living for almost 40 years and this is the very first time I see a cable that looks like a piece of silk, really don't know how they will sound. Btw, love the closed back design
Yes....that looks awesome.. I'm a modder myself but I use CNC to do some custom grilles for LCD series and Hifiman Eggshapes... My current favorite finishes are black chrome and 24k gold plated. Great to change a muted design to a lively cans. Absolutely worth the effort. Once again great works from you. Appreciate your sharing on how you did it. 👍🏻 Cheers.
I would love a CNC mill ... at the moment our workshop is above an estate agents so we don't want to annoy them with the sound but if we move it is going on the list of new toys
The Sundara alwayes looked awesome imo, and then u slapped 24 karat gold on them, thats baller. I would love these since I cant use open back headphones bc I would annoy everyone I live with and the sundara seems like a great pair of headphones!
Thanks for the video. Of course I would love the Headphone! looks beautiful. I was lucky recently to find a very cheap original HE400 - they sounded good BUT I had an old 1990's Sharwood amp from years ago that Ive never used as I tend to use IEMs, and plugged my DAP into it. Honestly I could not believe how much of a difference it made. Like a mid tier to top tier sound difference. Point being planars enjoy a good amount of power which Im sure we all know here :) but more importantly, (If I may be so bold as to plead with ya'al) where ever possible always seek different synergys with your signal flows - It only takes one [less-than-perfect component in your audio chain to knacker the end sound! ;) Its amazed me over the years how sometimes there is a gem hidden inside headphones that sometimes need a bit of time to get to - different source, pads, cables etc etc (Ive heard of this company called 'Bustin Mams'? Something like that? who do superb cables...maybe you heard of them? - should be easy enough to find )
@@CustomCans It never ceases to impress me the amount of incredible quality that came out of the 1990's - Sennhesier HD 540 / HD 250. Beyerdynamic DT 880 600ohm - even the 1980's Beyer DT770 is WAY better than the modern versions - much more natural and linear AKG Sextett etc etc
Hearing you say that you're going to be ripping out the tuning, to see what does what, makes you sound like a mad scientist. "I wonder what this bit does?" and then you rip it out, potentially permanently damaging them, just to see how it changes the sound. Love the content, and yeah I want em.
Your artwork on the Sundara Closed is very classy, and the cables are The Chefs Kiss! I would love to show them off around the city (Philadelphia)! Love your designs! One LOVE! Cheers!!
Philidelphia... I suspect that ... On the playground was where you spent most of your days. Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin', all cool And all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school
I certainly would love to win these Sundara closed back. I have the open backs, the more recent revision, and just bought an amplifier that really scales them. First thing that caught my eye with your headphones is that you put a Mexica (Aztec) Sun Stone decal on them. As a Mexican, I say to you: nice touch! The other day I tried using the Sundaras as monitors whilst playing with my band. I kept telling the guitar player: louder mate, louder! I couldn’t hear the click or midi tracks. Eventually, the vocalist takes them off my head, puts them on, has the guitarist play back the midi and he literally fell on his bum. He looks at me and says: these sound great, but put on your iems and get to playing, not time to listen to music. Thanks for your videos and reviews. Have a good one, cheers!
I'd love to have a set of these as I've become obsessed with looking for new details in old favourites - I'd also love to see if I can hear any magic coming through your fancy cables!
Hm... They seem interesting. And hopefully sound is the same as the look. I want them :D As current user of open-backs (Philips SHP9500) I'm thinking about switching to closed-backs one day. First of all in terms of monitoring, and then listening.
I like the mods on this channel very much, and demonstrators don't hesitate to share the transformation process and results with everyone. It is beneficial for fans who are interested in DIY! I have an original SUNDARA, I like its sound very much, I don't know if the new version will suit my appetite :)
Wow, you went all out to create some amazing looking headphones !!!! Very good idea and the result is beautiful !! Would love to use them to upgrade my sound !
Hey! I kinda do what you said at the end of the video haha. I team up with young musicians and we get in touch with (sorry, I don't know the word in English but) the people who work with the mayor of different towns here in my country and we teach youngsters how to make their own instruments, how to make music and finally, have it properly recorded (the least controlable factor is acoustics but everything is truly "Do what you can, you'll get better"). Each step from a PBC to a DAW is briefly covered! Oh, I know this channel for a while now but these last few days I've looped your Beyer vids cause I got a broken DT860 and I'm having too much fun repairing/modding it!
But...but....what if my dog ACTUALLY exploded? I hope you actually haven't gotten comments like that lol. The headphones look absolutely GORGEOUS as hell, really adore the artistry and work that was put into them. They dont look gaudy or tacky at all. The cable on them as well look gorgeous too! Reminds me a bit of what Pagan Min from Far Cry 4 would wear, and that's not an insult! Definitely have that kind of vibe going about them. I definitely want em that's for sure. I'm also very surprised NO ONE has reviewed the closed version. Would have expected there to be coverage of it from all sorts of reviewers.
that shiny golden ear protection is exactly what im looking for to wear to work, because i was told last week that i cant keep using power tools without ppe. my boss has been on my case for a while and i keep telling him i will get them once someone does an online giveaway and realizes I'm the greatest man on earth. and here you are. your donation to my health and safety will be appreciated friend. you will have saved my from industrial deafness, so i can instead get the hearing loss i deserve from the headphones.
Been using Dt 990 Pro´s forever and they just died recently. I´m going to repair them, but the measurements you did in this video def. make me wanna shop around for possible alternatives. I would love these one off´s for when I produce and edit music for my dj´sets. I´m especially curious about the clarity/seperation on these and the low end. A closed pair would really make my wife much happier as i tend to turn up the volume a bit much ;o)
I have used Audeze's Penrose for over a year. They're also closed planars but with an integrated DAC. Even the input jack is reprocessed by it. As a newbie to planar headphones, they've impressed me with their detailed upper mids. I consider replacing them though because of their internal DAC and the uncomfortable headband, despite their low weight. I'm curious what thoughts went into the two different headband approaches of HiFiMan. So if the giveaway is still open, I certainly would appreciate the chance. Great job with these golden ones btw.
I just want the headphones mate, I've been looking for a decent pair of closed backs and since these have decent isolation I wouldn't mind a pair. Doubt I'd take em to school or anything but I'd use em out and about, plus the cable is really nice so 🤷♂️ Cheers!
Hi, love your laid back approach I feel chilled but entertaingly informed. I'm new to the hi-res audio file scene and enjoying every moment. My feeble attempt at a Joke "What's the difference between a Cat and a Comma? A Cat has claws at the end of his paws; A Comma is a Pause at the end of a Clause".
Never tried a hifi closed back nor planar headphones but I would love to ! The cable also makes the set look quite exciting. Loving the stuff you guys doing !
I love that the only requirement for the giveaway is a positive comment, preferably something that makes you laugh. Well, I've got a story to tell. Back in the day, one of my friends purchased a Audio Technica AD900, this was back around 2007 when PC enthusiasts were using soundcards because external dacs/amps had issues with PC's and motherboard audio was horrendous back then even for low impedance headphones. This friend of mine back then would buy one soundcard after another. He tried the Audigy, then X-Fi, then the Auzen X-fi Prelude (which was one of the best options back then), and another company that was popular back then (I forgot what it was called) and every time he kept saying he doesn't hear a difference! And the AD900's suck! Well by today's standards there are better options, but back then they were a massive upgrade over your usual gaming headphones. Anyway. I ended up visiting his place just to see that the entire time he was plugging the headphones into the front IO of his PC case, even though he was buying and changing soundcards 🤣😂🤣
Lol... I used to be a PC technician in the olden days so came accross that kind of thing a lot. My favourite one was when a customer rang up and complained that the cup holder kept going back in by it's self and spilling drinks... 10 mins later we established that it was a CD ROM drive and not a cup holder
@@CustomCans oh my God 😂😂 I done a bit of technician work towards the end of high school in the mid-2000's too but never came across that one. Cup holder lol
@@CustomCans haha, I have had the same job and seen the same thing! I also had a Doctor who paid £380 on a callout because they couldn't find the off button, which was right on the front with on/off written above it. I also had a man who covered his monitor in tin foil to stop the demons getting out. When you deal with the public, stories are often made.
Great review strange I was looking at the closed back Sundaras a few weeks ago and was waiting for a good review . I bought the Sennheiser hd 6xx mod kit from you ,fantastic difference in sound thanks all the best.
If you're going to EQ the CB for sparkle and tame the midrange, OB Sundara that is EQed to bring up the bass seems like a better way to go. With that being said, I'd enjoy winning these as I only buy headphones every 5 years. Keeps me off the hype train and lets me enjoy the investment before buying the "latest, greatest". Current phones are Sundara 2020 OB, AKG K712 Pro, and AKG Q701. Rotate them every 2 weeks so nothing gets boring. Favorites are the AKG K712 Pro. However, if I were to win the CB Sundara's, I think they'd be different enough from the others that I would enjoy the change when it was their turn in the rotation.
Yes - the open sudaras with more bass would be better but there are times when closed backed is the way to go. I will have to have a proper play with both and see what I can do
I'm new to audio world so this is super interesting. Looks like a good reason to learn about EQ and experiment with the tuning. Also super interested and appreciate when the headphone has that personal touch from another person's craftsmanship
Excellent video! I currently own the open back Sundara and love it. Really need to get the closed back since my wife keeps yelling at me to turn the volume down because it’s distracting her! 😂
Trying to increase my listening quality, I bought the open back Sundara a month ago and I'm blown away by the detail. I'd love the closed backs to complement the bass, have another great reference, and record vocals on my little-more-or-less-homestudio! Haha. Good luck everyone!!
Really interested to get one of these! I'm currently appaled by hifiman qc on my edition xs when the unit I got had rattle on the right side. Even before the rattle, I felt like the advertised "bass" was not really there; even the sundara open back new revision had more bass impact. I hope these sundara closed edition will scratch the itch of the basshead junkie I am!
would be very cool to get them of course. Really have been loving your videos especially the modding stuff since I really love tinkering with stuff and modding my headphones if i can to try to improve them since it's really a pleasure. That clip in waveguide mod on the he400se that you haven't released made me make my own for my pair of OG he400 s i had found, works wonders. Your really the only person making modding videos on headphones on youtube and either im looking at the wrong places but I'm surprised that this part of the hobbby is a smaller than i expected. But maybe thats just cause coming from the switch and keyboard modding scene n that I've got the wrong expectations. Regardless, keep up the awesome content. Thanks jason
I'm sure they would help me focusing in working from home as my neighbor has quadruplets hahaha. I have a 560s, and I'm looking over for a closed back and this was launched, so here I am. Great video guys, keep up the great work
I was going to get a pair of the Sundara's as my first pair of hi-fi headphones for my birthday because I love the idea of Planar technology and want to know what "beautiful" sounds like 😂. Then I heard these were coming out and have been waiting for a good measurement of em to know if I'd be better off with these or my first choice. Finding out that they are mobile friendly and have incredible bass extension is amazing since I listen to a lot of house and instrumental music while working or reading. So now I'm leaning way more towards these as an everyday driver to replace my NC 700s, especially if the isolation is good enough to almost get you run over 😂. I don't know what mid forwardness sounds like but most of my music listening doesn't include vocals since the words distract me. But I also feel like these would be a great pair to experiment with EQ-ing, leaving a lot of room for me to explore the hobby. However I'd still love to own the open Sundaras since I was drawn to them for how much they represented the clean neutral sound of hi-fi the reviews I've seen were talking about, and motive me more to explore good amps and DACs as well 😅. Winning these would mean I can still get them for my birthday and have both as you recommended 😅. I'd also get to compare closed Vs open back hi-fi a lot earlier, as I planned to do that if I ever got the DCA Aeon Noir in the future (the folding arms had me sold immediately). If not though, you've still made a great case for these for me so I'll flip my upgrade path in reverse and try a mobile friendly closed back before diving deeper into open back hi-fi maybe with the edition XS, Ananda or just the HE400's as an affordable gateway. Thanks ☺️
I think, if I could only have one or the other I would go with the open backs but they both have their charms ... Hopefully I can convince my team to let me get some eddtion XS and Anadas in next month... good luck. J
Found your review after deciding to start looking into a good pair of headphones and sound setup for my desk. Came down with covid and am about to binge your channel. I would love to win those gnarly headphones to start my audio loving journey!
First track through these : 'The ecstacy of gold' by Enrico Morricone The open-back Sundara is one of the headphones I reach for the most, so I'd love to compare. Honestly though if I owned something like that, I'd feel like I should build some kind of shrine to it
Amazing video, first of all. You really went all out on these! No dogs exploding or anything but man, the cable is so overkill I'd enter a giveaway just for that. Other than that, well, I'd really like to thank you for the helpful content you have made on this channel. Did the DT770 cable mod + weights this summer and it was so easy thanks to the step-by-step guide. So, a big thanks.
@@CustomCans It's a nice design and fairly easy to deal with but still, removing the ifs and buts really helped. And finally ended the misery of having meters of cable on the floor
Huge fan of Custom Cans, loved my modded DT990 from you! Interested to try the closed back Sundara as I never fully got the hype behind the open backs and wonder how these compare!
They would be a good pairing as they are very different, I suspect you would hear totally different things swapping between 990s and these... good luck
I dove head first into the audiophile/headphone world and I've been really enjoying your modding projects. You are The Shoe Surgeon of headphones. The Headphone Surgeon! Thanks for the early review, I have been considering purchasing the open-back Sundara for quite some time (for studio/piano/general listening purposes). The closed-back version could be more suited for the loud city environment I am living in, but I am going to ponder on the graphs and your comments a little more. Cheers!
This was really awesome review, loved it! also excited for giveaway as i have m50x and want to try something high end like sundara. fingers crossed! Also in your next video if possible please compare the bass with any comparable audeze headphone. I laughed so hard when u said dog exploded lol.
Unfortunately I have just spent £15000 on stock for the run up to xmas so could not afford any audezes.. But I will see if I can borrow some for a comparison. No promises but I will see what I can rustle up
I pulled them apart in the previous video if you fancy checking it out - they are totally different to the open backs ua-cam.com/video/su4-Kx9mIaQ/v-deo.html
Jason the Gray has spoken! His magic words influence the custom headphone community on a daily basis! Thank you for your not-so-precise description of these wooden beauties!
No sob story round here guys, but I'd absolutely love to suprise my partner with a Sandara set.. he's working and trying so hard at the minute with his music production and im so proud of his input, love & passion to the music industry even with all the hurdles of it all.. he's an old skool DJ so his passion for his technics 1210s are something else haha.. so a beautiful set of decent headphones would after all these 27 years compliment his ability even more so ❣️ We love the content and love browsing your customs.. I'd love to have my limited edition sennhieser 25s done when I win the lottery 🤣🎵🎶 Xx
i want to see these paired with a jot2, sounds like they would pair great together, both are warm, forward, and bass/detail centric with slight not as wide soundstage from what i've heard
Good afternoon Custom Cans Crew. I've got to tell you guys that I absolutely love your content! I stumbled upon your channel about 2 weeks ago and you guys have taught me so much. I feel like I've been an audiophile most my life at least in my appreciation for music and it's so many genres. It wasn't until very recently that I learned about Hi-res music files and how much higher the quality and resolution can truly be when you have the proper gear and hardware. Because of that, I have begun my journey to acquire some quality cans so that I can again explore my musical past and relive all my favorite music in much higher quality. Music is life! I'm all about that bass, about that bass AND treble!!! Thank you guys for the great content.
GOLD! - Always believe in your soul. You've got the power to know. You're indestructible! Always believe in, 'cos you are GOLD! I would like these very much.
Hi Jason, thanks for your work in sharing your knowledge of how all these cans work... ok, let the hustle begin!... My cousin's friend kindly gave me an Ableton Live controller after I he had asked me for help with something. He needed to re-record some dialogue from a TV show for a track he was making, as it was obviously unrealistic to get sample clearance(!) He asked me, and I did it earlier this year. It was a cool process, just to be a small part of. Now I have not only ticked off a bucket list item, but also started down the path of music production. I don't currently have any headphones to work at this kind of high fidelity standard. If i'd be lucky enough to get a pair, I think I would get a lot of fun using them to get into a momentum of creating music, as well as just listening for enjoyment of course. I mean i'm not superstitious, but they say good things come in threes. Thinking about it, the controller, along with - not a monophone but rather - a pair of headphones.... 1+2=3. You will be bringing order to the universe, yes! Finally, not to "kitchen sink it" but..... my best friend is called Jason (seriously), and not shy to provide literal documentary evidence of this... that is of course, assuming you are interested to dabble with... nepotism I guess? Cheers!
I would love a pair of these what’s not to like it’s HIFI bling! My portable amp & play combo will drive these extremely well so therefore they would be excellent on the go not walking through the streets or in the car though with them on obviously I will wait until I get to my chosen location first haha!
I would love the give away Sunderas. I've always owned open-back headphones but I never had a closed-back. The way you described how they are with the speed, accuracy and details sounds exciting! I love gold so the gold finish will be a warm welcome. I'd would like to take them wherever I'd like and listen to them comfortably while I study at cafes isolated from the noises there :)
I'd love to have those in my collection! Here is a funny story for you, I got into this audio hobby a while ago, I'm 23 now but I want to say I started at about 13 years old with very cheap headphones, and IEM, anyways, I decided to finally get a nice pair of headphones, so I decided to go for the HD25-ii-1, and after months of saving I finally got them, I was of course blown away but my parents where extremely doubtful and non approving of me spending months of savings on a pair of headphones, and after I tried to convince them my dad said he wanted to listen what it was all about, but that same day my right speaker stoped working after just a few days of use, of course I felt like crying lol, so I went into UA-cam and found one of your videos about fixing the lose connection, which saved me from being totally schooled by my parents, he loved the sound at the end, keep up the amazing work!
Honestly I love the hifi Sundara I'm a bass fan and have a zen dac v2 to test it out abit better so I would love a pair. Your you tube channel is the ultimate guide for headphones compared to all channels I've watched very descriptive on the headphones and how it coexists with your ears hence my ears one day🙃 And look it's either you be more aware around traffic with your headphones on or you can change your will under my name I could do with a few of your headphones 😜
I would love to win these headphones. I have recently built some beyerdynamic dt770pro with a internal mic. You supplied me with the cable and tuning kit. I have the headphone bug now, my partner as well, so definitely need another set to keep her happy 😂
I do indeed have the bug. Very Impressed with the new cable and particularly the attention to detail. My dt770pro caught the eye of many fascinated gamers when I attended insomnia gaming festival.
Now those are some gorgeous Sundara's, but even they with those amazing mods, can't compare to the Beauty of the Jecklin Floats (if you know, you know).
A few years back I really got into planar magnetic headphones, and from there, just stuck with them. After running around with planars, I decided to try open back headphones, so I picked up a pair of Hifiman Sundaras Open back. I realized, my environment can be noisy at times, and it can be hard to hear in noisy environments. After seeing your video introducing a closed-back pair I thought it would be perfect to use in those situations. Sundaras are always better in pairs, and mine would love to have yours as its partner. Would love to hear them on my SMSL SU9. Fingers crossed! P.S. You said to make you laugh; so here's a joke to go with my comment. What was the energizer bunny arrested for? He was arrested on a charge of battery. Hope it helps!
No exploding dog, which is why I'd love a pair of these puppies! Jokes aside, it would be amazing if these were my first experience of planar headphones.
Beautiful work as always. I own a pair of HE-400i(gen2) which I have modded a bit, nothing fancy. My wife would love if I had a pair if closed back headphones instead though.
I would definitely love to get my hands on them. I haven't tried to modify planers yet so love to try that, also to see if i could flatten out that uneven graph a bit. So far i have mostly been messing about with various Grado headphones and the Creative labs Cal SE's which are a brilliant headphone for the price. I really is a different experience listening to something you have had a hand in making, there is a certain pride in it. Also thanks for the tips on modifying headphones I've gotten from you for the past year or so.
I'd love a chance to win that very pretty pair of golden headphones as they could inspire me to paint myself golden to match and embark upon a new career as a living statue, which would be the best way of showing them off. My only fear is that attempting to stay very, very, very still while listening to that bass might be almost impossible.
I'm currently working in a radio station... it would be fun to go to work and here in the back "Wait!! Where did you find these??" - "Custom Cans of course" I wish I could win them!!
Love your down to earth comparision. Very intersting take on the Closed-back Sundura. Would love to own one sometimes in the future. Thanks for the awesome info.
Amazing paintjob! I love handmade paintjobs. At the moment i am using an Open Alpha T50 mod when going on a train. They look a little outdated and very heavy with 500 gramms and i am searching for a long time for some eyecandy and not the usual stuff. I would be very happy to win this awesome headphone 😊 Thank you!
Hey, These Sundara Closed backs look great, great work 👍, I've been using Hifimans quite some time. Lately a pair of Hifiman Edition X V2, A Closed back option would be very useful! And the Sundaras would fill the spot great. You're take on headphone sound is nice to hear.
We gotta get you another measurement rig my guy. MiniDSP ears is cursed.
@@CustomCans sure thing. Shoot me an email or give me a shout on Twitter. Happy to help.
This thread is an example of how it's done and why audio people are awesomerer sauce.
What you do here is genuinely amazing. Your channel have a bright future.
Thanks - I hope so ;) although there probably not that many more people who are into this kind of thing ;)
I want them, need a closed back in my collection, but I find it impossible to tell a better joke than 1266s sounding right ;-).
Cheers mate, love your guides on midifying cans, keep up the good work!
Thanks and good luck ;)
Would love these. I am relatively new to the audiophile hobby, I am already hooked, spent too much money and struggling to justify any of this to friends, family and at times myself. Love it.
It is always tricky to know when to stop ;)
I'm honestly equally excited about the cable, would love to see what it can do to some high-end cans.
And hey, if it's not an improvement, it'd be an amazing strap for my hipster tote bag. Can't let all that work go to waste
Lol ;)
it will definitely transmit sound
I've been teetering on getting a pair of enthusiast headphones for years now. Would definitely listen to more music, even more often. My life has been on the up and up, and the past 6 months of my life has been a breath of fresh air. Finally have a job where I have some comfort and sustainability. Recently found your vids after doing more research on headphones. Definitely here to stay. I would be over the moon if I won these headphones....but either way, I wanna dive more into the audio-sphere, and will definitely be watching you for a long time to come.
Welcome aboard. Good Luck in the comp
Hello, first time watching the live.
I may need a closed back now that life is changing, I would love to get this famous fusion of the both.
Anyway it was nice chatting, and good luck everyone.
I am super embarrassed to say that I got caught up in something and missed the live premier. Good luck to you too sir
If I win these cans I'll be sure to make a click baity video: gold Sundaras vs regular Sundaras, cork sniffin' if gold makes them sound more sparkly
Love the channel, keep up the good work!
Lol.. I should have done that video ;)
Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it and good luck in the comp
hey, it's probably to late to enter the competition, but I still wanted to say that I really enjoy watching your videos.
We do have dome mods for the 770 to squeeze a bit more out of them ;)
Love learning about the new closed back Sundara from your 2 reviews. Seems that Hifiman did improve a bit in term of build quality from your previous video. Love these type of videos that provide lot of new information. I would love to have a chance to win the give away (for once) and heard the headphones myself. Thank you.
Thanks ;)
I bought the Sundaras closed backs few days ago. Yes, their mid range is forward and out of the box they sound a bit shouty, but after I EQ'd them they sounded really good to my ears. Really happy with this purchase 🥳
We did end up making a physical mod as well

@@CustomCans Nice one! I did order a pair of the pad adapter rings.
What EQ settings do u recommend? Thnx
If you can hold on until around march, we could probably book them in for a refurb
@@CustomCans I'll keep that in mind for sure.
Welcome aboard and good luck in the comp
I like to listen to classical music on my open back Sundaras when I'm sober, but I would love to listen to good techno music on the closed back Sundaras when I'm wasted ;)
Thanks for the nice vid!
Lol ;)
Mods seems fun, been interested to start my own modding since i bought a modded dt880 from the used market. but the fear of ruining the headphone is holding me back. I hope to complete a headphone mod of my own one day. Cheers anyway your videos are great.
Yes - it is a bit scary the first time. Even though my team and I have a lot of experience, we still break things some times
Would love these mate. I'll probably just sit around drinking beer listening to music. That's pretty much what I do now anyway. Keep up the good work.
Sounds like the good life ;)
An interesting review.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the videos and good luck in the comp
We order beyer stock 3 months in advance so I won't be able to get some until Xmas now but I will try to get some then
@@CustomCans I plan on sending them in within the next week or so, feel free to tinker around and use them for a video if you want!
You will definitely get noticed walking the streets in these .. Good luck
@@CustomCans thanks mate love these videos so much . I’m not technical at all but these break downs are so fascinating to me. Keep up the good work.
I'd love those cans! *insert story here about how my life is terrible due to losing my job/pets/house/relatives (pick your favourite) and everything would be fixed if I got some fancy gold headphones for free*
But seriously, those Sundaras look awesome. I haven't tried any planars before and I want to hear whatever it is that apparently makes planars so good. Been running with my AKG K371s for a couple years and I love them but I'd also love to be able to switch it up a bit without creating a sinkhole in my wallet :p
My hobbies are Cars, Headphones and computers.. My wallet is more sinkhole than wallet now... I feel your pain. Good luck
I want em mostly because the Sundara was my long time love and I finally got my hands on them, but unfortunately couldn't hold on to them for long because I didn't have a good enough amp. Now I've upgraded and am excited to not only come back to a long lost love, but also to an unique model *French kiss*
Good luck in the comp ;)
Thanks for the great 2 part review. I found your channel looking for a review of this very headphone and now I'm a subscriber a looking forward to more reviews. I would like to win the Sundara closedbacks so I can walk around sparking joy in peoples lives with the great look you guys have added to the headphones.
Thanks and welcome aboard
Hi Jason! To be honest I just want to take part on the giveaway to get your new cable (from your last video) for my focal clear :D
Well.... Luckily the hifiman and focals both take the same kind of connection .... Good luck ;)
Thanks for comparing measurement graphs and speaking about it. It was a straightforward and not deceiving part. I liked it. Need to listen again for mine HiFiMan X4 and listen to your video again)
Glad it was helpful!
@@CustomCans yes, it was at best. I am looking for a better headphones and you did a lot of comparable a!
I would love these! I'm going to pick up my first amp/dac stack this week, so this would be the icing on the 🍰.
They do respond well to being amped
@@CustomCans I'm going to be honest. I haven't seen your channel before this video. Last 2 years I've became obsessed with audio/music. I've looked around your channel and it's really something else man haha. It looks like another thing I've looked at which is custom sneakers.
O.M.G, I've been living for almost 40 years and this is the very first time I see a cable that looks like a piece of silk, really don't know how they will sound. Btw, love the closed back design
Thanks
Yes....that looks awesome.. I'm a modder myself but I use CNC to do some custom grilles for LCD series and Hifiman Eggshapes... My current favorite finishes are black chrome and 24k gold plated.
Great to change a muted design to a lively cans. Absolutely worth the effort. Once again great works from you. Appreciate your sharing on how you did it. 👍🏻 Cheers.
I would love a CNC mill ... at the moment our workshop is above an estate agents so we don't want to annoy them with the sound but if we move it is going on the list of new toys
@@CustomCans hope 1 day you will have it, im sure you'll get something great out of it. Enjoy!!
Thank you for your excellent contribution to the audiophile community.
No problem
Sick video bossman, would love to try these for myself and compare them to my regular sundaras
Thanks and good luck
The Sundara alwayes looked awesome imo, and then u slapped 24 karat gold on them, thats baller. I would love these since I cant use open back headphones bc I would annoy everyone I live with and the sundara seems like a great pair of headphones!
Thanks and good luck in the comp
Those look fantastic and would like to try Hifiman headphones.
Good luck in the comp
I would love to get a pair of closed back sundara's. I love my Arias but I struggle with in-ears sometimes.
I know what you mean ... Good luck
Point being planars enjoy a good amount of power which Im sure we all know here :) but more importantly,
(If I may be so bold as to plead with ya'al) where ever possible always seek different synergys with your signal flows - It only takes one [less-than-perfect component in your audio chain to knacker the end sound! ;)
Its amazed me over the years how sometimes there is a gem hidden inside headphones that sometimes need a bit of time to get to - different source, pads, cables etc etc (Ive heard of this company called 'Bustin Mams'? Something like that? who do superb cables...maybe you heard of them? - should be easy enough to find )
Yes .. they do need a good chunk of power to get the best out of them
@@CustomCans It never ceases to impress me the amount of incredible quality that came out of the 1990's - Sennhesier HD 540 / HD 250.
The best way to learn is always to break something and then figure out how to fix it...
Your artwork on the Sundara Closed is very classy, and the cables are The Chefs Kiss!
I would love to show them off around the city (Philadelphia)!
Love your designs!
One LOVE!

@@CustomCans yup, but no smacking the comedian at the awards banquet... lol.
Yes, the closed back would be much better for monitoring ;)
I'd love to have a set of these as I've become obsessed with looking for new details in old favourites - I'd also love to see if I can hear any magic coming through your fancy cables!
Yes it is always good when you can hear new things in tracks you did not hear before
Hm... They seem interesting. And hopefully sound is the same as the look. I want them :D
As current user of open-backs (Philips SHP9500) I'm thinking about switching to closed-backs one day. First of all in terms of monitoring, and then listening.
Good luck in the comp ;)
I like the mods on this channel very much, and demonstrators don't hesitate to share the transformation process and results with everyone. It is beneficial for fans who are interested in DIY!
I have an original SUNDARA, I like its sound very much, I don't know if the new version will suit my appetite :)
Thanks ;)
Bring on the bling...great work, hard to find good closed backs...
Thanks ;)
Wow, you went all out to create some amazing looking headphones !!!! Very good idea and the result is beautiful !! Would love to use them to upgrade my sound !
Thanks and good luck
Sounds like awesome work. Also.. glad the vids have been useful
Luckily we have minimal canine explosions in the comments so far - good luck ;)
@@CustomCans Lol, thankfully! And thank you ^^
that shiny golden ear protection is exactly what im looking for to wear to work, because i was told last week that i cant keep using power tools without ppe. my boss has been on my case for a while and i keep telling him i will get them once someone does an online giveaway and realizes I'm the greatest man on earth. and here you are. your donation to my health and safety will be appreciated friend. you will have saved my from industrial deafness, so i can instead get the hearing loss i deserve from the headphones.
lol .. Good luck ;)
We can probably repair and upgrade your 990s so they sound even better if you are in the UK.
Good luck in the comp
@@CustomCans Im located in Denmark :/
I have used Audeze's Penrose for over a year. They're also closed planars but with an integrated DAC. Even the input jack is reprocessed by it. As a newbie to planar headphones, they've impressed me with their detailed upper mids. I consider replacing them though because of their internal DAC and the uncomfortable headband, despite their low weight. I'm curious what thoughts went into the two different headband approaches of HiFiMan. So if the giveaway is still open, I certainly would appreciate the chance. Great job with these golden ones btw.
I think you are just in time - we should be choosing comments today ;)
I just want the headphones mate, I've been looking for a decent pair of closed backs and since these have decent isolation I wouldn't mind a pair. Doubt I'd take em to school or anything but I'd use em out and about, plus the cable is really nice so 🤷♂️
Cheers!
Thanks ... Good luck
Didn't expect all the gold design but it's definitely groovy.
thanks ;)
Hi, love your laid back approach I feel chilled but entertaingly informed. I'm new to the hi-res audio file scene and enjoying every moment. My feeble attempt at a Joke "What's the difference between a Cat and a Comma? A Cat has claws at the end of his paws; A Comma is a Pause at the end of a Clause".
Lol ... Good luck in the comp ;)
Never tried a hifi closed back nor planar headphones but I would love to ! The cable also makes the set look quite exciting. Loving the stuff you guys doing !
Thanks ;)
Thanks - glad you enjoyed the mod
@@CustomCans thanks hope to shop with you soon thanks 👍

Thank you for the good comparison. This would be the best bang of buck update for my HE-400i, if I win these.
They would be a good addition to your collection ;) good luck
Good Luck ;)
Excellent video! I currently own the open back Sundara and love it. Really need to get the closed back since my wife keeps yelling at me to turn the volume down because it’s distracting her! 😂
Good luck in the comp ;)
Trying to increase my listening quality, I bought the open back Sundara a month ago and I'm blown away by the detail. I'd love the closed backs to complement the bass, have another great reference, and record vocals on my little-more-or-less-homestudio! Haha. Good luck everyone!!
Good luck
Really interested to get one of these! I'm currently appaled by hifiman qc on my edition xs when the unit I got had rattle on the right side. Even before the rattle, I felt like the advertised "bass" was not really there; even the sundara open back new revision had more bass impact. I hope these sundara closed edition will scratch the itch of the basshead junkie I am!
I am sure they would .... Good luck
would be very cool to get them of course.
I really should finish off the HE400 mods and get them out... I am really good at starting projects ... not so good at finishing them ;)
I'm sure they would help me focusing in working from home as my neighbor has quadruplets hahaha. I have a 560s, and I'm looking over for a closed back and this was launched, so here I am. Great video guys, keep up the great work
Thanks ;)
Welcome aboard!
First track through these : 'The ecstacy of gold' by Enrico Morricone
The open-back Sundara is one of the headphones I reach for the most, so I'd love to compare.
Honestly though if I owned something like that, I'd feel like I should build some kind of shrine to it
I will have to have a listen to that on the tomorrow... Good luck ;)
I really want em, going to give them to my wife to use while she makes oil paintings, a perfect headphone for an artist👌
They probably are a good headphone for that kind of thing - getting lost in the music while you paint
Thanks and glad you enjoyed modding the 770s - they do come apart really nicely so the beyerdynamic designers get a big thumbs up from me
@@CustomCans It's a nice design and fairly easy to deal with but still, removing the ifs and buts really helped.
Cheers!
Yes, it is a difficult choice
This was really awesome review, loved it! also excited for giveaway as i have m50x and want to try something high end like sundara. fingers crossed! Also in your next video if possible please compare the bass with any comparable audeze headphone. I laughed so hard when u said dog exploded lol.
Unfortunately I have just spent £15000 on stock for the run up to xmas so could not afford any audezes.. But I will see if I can borrow some for a comparison. No promises but I will see what I can rustle up
@@CustomCans appreciate your efforts 👌
Would like these, to check whether they just sealed the open back Sundara and called it a day (and called it Sundara Closed).
I pulled them apart in the previous video if you fancy checking it out - they are totally different to the open backs

Jason the Gray has spoken! His magic words influence the custom headphone community on a daily basis! Thank you for your not-so-precise description of these wooden beauties!
No Problem ;) Thatnks
These look amazing! I've been looking for a pair of closed backs so I'm very intrigued :)
Thanks
No sob story round here guys, but I'd absolutely love to suprise my partner with a Sandara set.. he's working and trying so hard at the minute with his music production and im so proud of his input, love & passion to the music industry even with all the hurdles of it all.. he's an old skool DJ so his passion for his technics 1210s are something else haha.. so a beautiful set of decent headphones would after all these 27 years compliment his ability even more so ❣️
We love the content and love browsing your customs..
I'd love to have my limited edition sennhieser 25s done when I win the lottery 🤣🎵🎶
Xx
I got my first pair of 1210s in 1996 and still have them .. I must make some time to get back into DJing one day... Good luck in the comp
i want to see these paired with a jot2, sounds like they would pair great together, both are warm, forward, and bass/detail centric with slight not as wide soundstage from what i've heard
Good luck in the comp
Really glad you are enjoying the videos and more importantly the music ;)
GOLD! - Always believe in your soul. You've got the power to know. You're indestructible! Always believe in, 'cos you are GOLD! I would like these very much.
Now that is going to be stuck in my head all evening ;)
That gold Sundara Closed looks absolutely amazing, and I'd love to have it alongside my OG Sundara!
First time viewer. Love your desk setup, sort of looks like mine. I do like your review style. Subscribed!
Welcome aboard
Nothing wrong with a bit of hi-fi bling ;)
I would love the give away Sunderas.
I've always owned open-back headphones but I never had a closed-back. The way you described how they are with the speed, accuracy and details sounds exciting! I love gold so the gold finish will be a warm welcome. I'd would like to take them wherever I'd like and listen to them comfortably while I study at cafes isolated from the noises there :)
Yes they would be great for a but of cafe studding. Good luck in the comp
The HD25 do give good bang for the buck. Good luck
Honestly I love the hifi Sundara I'm a bass fan and have a zen dac v2 to test it out abit better so I would love a pair.
Your you tube channel is the ultimate guide for headphones compared to all channels I've watched very descriptive on the headphones and how it coexists with your ears hence my ears one day🙃
And look it's either you be more aware around traffic with your headphones on or you can change your will under my name I could do with a few of your headphones 😜
They do have some of the best bass I have experienced
I would love to win these headphones. I have recently built some beyerdynamic dt770pro with a internal mic. You supplied me with the cable and tuning kit. I have the headphone bug now, my partner as well, so definitely need another set to keep her happy 😂
Ah ... you have the headphone bug now .... Good luck and welcome aboard the headphone train
I had seen pictures of them in memes but never knew what they were called - I am really tempted to try to pick some up now
A few years back I really got into planar magnetic headphones, and from there, just stuck with them.
Lol... Good luck in the comp
I Would very much like the headphones because !! Seriously though, I have ears, so these are literally designed for me!
LOLz :) They are designed speciffically for people with ears
No exploding dog, which is why I'd love a pair of these puppies! Jokes aside, it would be amazing if these were my first experience of planar headphones.
Lolz..... Good luck ;)
Beautiful work as always. I own a pair of HE-400i(gen2) which I have modded a bit, nothing fancy. My wife would love if I had a pair if closed back headphones instead though.
;) good luck
Jason, my friend fell into an upholstery machine but I’m happy to say he’s fully recovered now.
Lol - I will be telling that to a few people
I would definitely love to get my hands on them.
Glad you are enjoying the hobby and I completely agree
I'd love a chance to win that very pretty pair of golden headphones as they could inspire me to paint myself golden to match and embark upon a new career as a living statue, which would be the best way of showing them off. My only fear is that attempting to stay very, very, very still while listening to that bass might be almost impossible.
Lols - I never thought they could be the start of a new career for someone ... Good luck
I'm currently working in a radio station... it would be fun to go to work and here in the back "Wait!! Where did you find these??" - "Custom Cans of course"
I wish I could win them!!
I did a brief stint on the radio - it is harder then I had thought .... Good luck ;)
Love your down to earth comparision. Very intersting take on the Closed-back Sundura. Would love to own one sometimes in the future. Thanks for the awesome info.
Thanks :)
Thanks.. Good luck in the comp ;)
@@CustomCans thank you very much 👍
Those cans would look great beside my DT1770 which was also modded by Custom Cans! 😊
Ahhh... a collector ;) ... Good luck
Hey, These Sundara Closed backs look great, great work 👍, I've been using Hifimans quite some time. Lately a pair of Hifiman Edition X V2, A Closed back option would be very useful! And the Sundaras would fill the spot great. You're take on headphone sound is nice to hear.
Good luck ;)
