When this was played at the end of the movie in the cinema, to me this music was the best soundtrack ever in any movie. Ties in very well with the ending.
There is a theory stating that it was the prince who killed her. The sword he used in the previous fight against the emperor's army during the banquet had some kind of chains/ strings attached to it, which was similar to the swords used to stab the empress. Moreover, A Yuan once said to the prince that the most sophisticated performer could turn his own "face" ( also understood as one's identity) into a mask. So probably the person who died at the banquet is not the real prince, but a masquerade. Personally, I think that only being murdered by the prince, who she held a genuine love can cause the empress to undergo such a deep shock and extreme agony the moment she died. Sorry for my bad English 😰😰

it's 2021, I prefer "what is her ending suppose to mean?" rather than "who killed the empress?" If we grimly speaking, everyone is going to die one day, the only question would be "what is the end going to be?" Each of the main character in the movie dies in their own love interest's embrace, except the empress. It could be emotionally speaking, she died alone, alone at the top, it doesnt matter if her life is ended by political intrigue or old age of iron fist. The prince's last word "It is good to able to die" might be a forceful comparison/ clever writing. Yup. My answer is "it doesn't matter."
