Cuba Outperforms US in Infant Mortality

Meet Dr. Lusay Miranda.
Lusay Miranda is a 26-year-old family doctor in a clinic in the village of Soplillar. She laughs that some parents complain that their child learned to say her name before saying their own. For three months after a child’s birth, Lusay will stop in on the family daily.

Being born in the village, at first some of the older people used her childhood name, but now she has earned their respect. Her community can come to her 24 hours a day, seven days a week although she keeps regular consulting times Monday through Friday. We asked her if there was domestic violence in the community. She responded, “yes, there is.” We then asked if women come in battered and she said, “no, no, I’ve not seen that. Some men won’t help with the house work.”
