  • When I saw an ad for a BMW Demo Day at one of the local BMW dealers - Team Mancuso Powersports Southwest - in the week before Christmas, I was intrigued that there would be a BMW motorcycle transporter bringing a bunch of bikes for enthusiasts to try so close to Christmas. Well, that was not the case, but I did get a chance to try these two GSes, just to see which one would suit me best, and the result came as a bit of a surprise.

I love my f850gs. The new f850gs already has an adjustable windscreen.

Hello GG and seasons greetings. It is very interesting to hear your thoughts about the GS's, knowing you are a Tracer rider aswell. Yeah, hm, a GS would be nice, but I'll stick with my Tracer for now😁 Big thanks for your wise words!!

Tom, if it were not for the contemplated need for off road capability for camping then there would be no doubt that the Tracer is the better fit. Went for a ride on my Tracer yesterday and it clearly beats any 850 GS/GSA on the road. Not to mention it is a way better value.

@@GrumpyGoat Yeah, here in Sweden I ride mostly tarmac, the gravel roads are scrce these day... So, that's why the Tracer is a better choise for me... I really like your videos...keep'em comming!! Big thanks and a Happy New Year!!

You have an RS??? !!! I'd like to know how tall you are and if the RS is upright enough to ride all day, day after day. Also, I'd like to know why the RS isn't capable enough for the little bit if off road that you do. The boxers usually have good ground clearance and can do a lot with mild off road trails. It's almost impossible to find info on the RS, and my BMW dealer doesn't even stock them. Would you rather tour on the 850GS, or 1250RS?

@@chadkline4268 Yes I have an RS and like you I found it hard to find useful information on this great motorcycle with a storied history. This is why I created the RSWasserboxer.com website - check it out. I also own the RSWasserboxer.com forum where all us RS owners hang out and discuss various aspects of the bike and motorcycling. This UA-cam channel has a lot of RS content and is associated with the website.
I am 5'-8" with a 30" inseam and I ride long distance, with multiple 500 mile days back to back, fully loaded sometimes with motocamping gear. Check out the website and this channel for more information and videos about those tours.
I don't do off-road unless I am forced to as part of getting where I am going. That is because the RS is a sport-tourer and not an adventure bike. It does not have the required ground clearance and has street tires, which make it not suitable for off-road use. Yes it will go on a short gravel road but it does not like it. There is an excellent boxer for both street and offroad use and it is the "gelände straße" model otherwise known as the GS.
If I am touring on roads only the RS hands down. If I change my way of touring then the GS gets the nod. Check out the website and forums for more information.

@@GrumpyGoat 🙂👍 6'3, 38in inseam. It's really hard for me to decide on both bicycles and motorcycles. But you seem the perfect height for everything. Thanks for all of your references. I really like the RS. Even since the 1980s I dreamed of having one. But I'm worried I'd have to lean over too far, and it would get hard on my wrists. So I'm also looking at 850GSs. Thanks so much for your information.

Why? They are two different price brackets and categories. Why do people keep doing this?

Price is not the only factor when choosing a bike.
