I bought the rallye version of this bike as my first ever motorcycle, learning to ride has been extremely easy and I’m taking advantage of my huge height I’ve dropped it on the side just once the very first day while maneuvering outside the garage but even then I was able to set her down gracefully and the engine crash bars were there to save the day. I’d absolutely recommend it, i just installed the tallest windshield I could find and move the GPS above the TFT display
Agreed. The BMW recovery service is second to none. When I broke down in Germany last year, they went out of their way to help. Flew me home, supplied hire car so I could drive back to Cornwall. Brought bike back following week. Repaired by Ocean Plymouth. Very satisfied customer.
Get a Honda and stop worrying about breaking down. Sorry, couldn’t resist! My BMW’s were reliable although the F800ST corroded badly even with winter acf50 treatments.
In my uneducated opinion, the age of the 1000+cc adventure and offroad bikes are coming to an end. The Triumph Tiger 900 Rally/GT Pro and BMW F850GS(A) is just e few of the good alternatives now a days.
I made the exact same change from a R 1200 GS and bought a 850 GSA with the same color myself. I miss the shaft drive but I have become found of taking care of my chain. It is a nice way to keep in touch with the workings of the bike. I am going to add Touratech progressive springs to firm up the front fork a bit. My wife and I travel on mine, take it on gravel and fire roads, long highway stretches. It is just perfect!
Really looking forward to a comparison in a few months time! Once you've made the modifications you like and gotten used to it. Will be very interesting for sure.
Being able to switch your bags over is a good save, it’s usually one of the more expensive options in a new bike. I use the Bumot Xtremada soft bags myself and would hate to replace them, they are great.
I own the same model the exclusive model. I did find the Sat nav position a little awkward at first but with an after-maket sun shield it's fine now. I purchased the extra bar that fitted above the screen so the Sat nav can be fitted higher but I found it blocks your forward view , so I fitted it back in the original position. I have done 5000 miles now. Its a great bike for touring and light adventure riding. It is heavy moving about the garage and the centre of gravity is high so it might seem heavier than your 1200 GS. which carries it weight lower down due to the boxer engine.
Nice one mark. Great looking bike. It won't be long before Toby is getting one too . Enjoy your new bike ride safe look forward to seeing all your new bits you be putting on it. I clean my bike chain after a good ride out . When the chain is still hot and put chain wax on it.now covered 800 miles on my bike. A baby v strom dl 250. She great on miles to the tank of fuel. 300 miles.
Hi Mark. Nice to see you on your new (and completely correct) bike. Got mine early this spring and have ridden the 10,000km in 5 months. Chain and maintenance are not a hassle. I clean and lubricate every other tank. Do not drive with passengers but luggage and first time adjustment was on first service. Otherwise, I have also moved the navigation up over the tft. The only thing then is that you get some vibration. Otherwise you have to enjoy the bike and hope it gives you what you were looking for! 👍
Just bought one yesterday after riding on both it and the R1250GS. Love it. For me it is much better. I still have my K1600GTL but I am not sure for how much longer!
Congrats on the new bike, but I have to disagree with one point you made, “its lighter than the 1200 and feels lighter”. I test rode one for 2 days (very nice bike) and it feels top heavy and just awkward to manhandle about. I would say the front suspension is much plusher and more comfortable than the 1200 though. The 2 position screen adjust is nice too, but its on the wrong side.
Congratulations looking good and the fairing is spot on, Did your BMW shop forget to tell you about the new hi Tec BMW chain that wont need any lubrication?
Bigger tank on GSA and fairing. Apart from that same bike. Some after market adds don't fit on the GSA that do on the GS due to the fairing and contact between the handle bars and fairing, just something to be mindful of. Both are brilliant bikes.
Loncin Chinese engines are also fitted in lawn mowers and garden equipment. Sorry but for me, BMW is German manufacturing, tele-lever, boxer and shaft. If I want Chinese, I'll buy Chinese, not Chinese at German prices. Everything else is Japanese, Honda or similar. Hope this makes you happy.
BMW just came out with maintenance free chains on 2 sport bikes if they pan out I’m sure u could add it to your 800 later on . Beautiful bike Mark I’m so thrilled for u . Can’t wait to hear what u think of it and your experiences with it in the future. Other channels lmfao Toby is so funny
Nice bike Mark and good choice. I have the standard 850gs and as you say its got everything the 1200 / 1250 has....just for £5k less!! I might consider the 850gsa when my time comes to change. On a recent tour I was getting 69mpg !! Can't grumble at that. Enjoy and will look forward to hearing how you find it long term 👍
One of the key differences between F series GS and R series GS is (IMO) the front suspension. Having owned an F750GS and ridden an F850GS several times, the amount of front fork dive is very noticeable in comparison with my R1250GS. The fact that the front suspension is not adjustable on the F series bikes is a key difference, and seems to me to be a major omission. Think I'll stick with the Telelever front end. Oh, and the shaft drive. :D
Nice bike Mark, I would also say having ridden both of those bike's the 850 seems to be easier to live with and pull out the garage compared to the 1250. I expect it's not as good as the 1250 for touring but still good enough and will give you a more characterful ride. And as you know the money saved on the 850 is substantial . The 850 would suit me quite well too. You will soon forget the chain side of things.
Well.... congratulations. Always great to see the excitement of a new owner. I'll be interested to hear your unfiltered opinion on the bike after a year or so when you compare it to the 1200.
I had one as a courtesy bike a few weeks ago. Nice enough bike, but still big and heavy. I’d had a test ride on a KTM 790 before, and that was totally different. Lighter, more nimble, and am exciting engine. Don’t think I’ll be changing anytime soon tho, keeping my R12R another year.
Love your show gents. Just considering an F850 GSA ( from an Africa Twin DCT ). Re chain. You can use your oiler but you can also get a Regina Chain. And stop worrying about lube ;-). Pricey - because you’re worth it!
Re the satnav position, NN dose a bracket now that places the nav where it used t be on the 1200. Did you consider holding off until the 40 Anniversary GS comes out? Thats got loads of new bits on it...5 position heated seat/grips..New main beam layout and of course a new colour scheme (Its very yellow) Congrats on the bike but i think i might have gone for the Tiger 900GT Pro or Guzzi V85 TT.
How you getting on with your 850GSA? Any videos coming up on mods.... how do you find the screen? I’ve a 750GS and looking for an aftermarket windscreen to reduce the turbulence and buffet.
Review on its way very soon. I love it!!!! Much better than any of my 1200’s strangely enough. I have no problem with the screen after over 2000 miles in two months. Ride safe.
I remember you being impressed by this bike when you took it out in the pouring rain for a test ride. I thought you might have gone Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sport, but as you say, panniers fit, and sat nav transfers over, so money saved. I am looking at this bike and the Honda ATAS when I change my GS, so I will have the same dilemma. Anyway, enjoy your new bike!!
LOL you know Mark, I was surfing BMW’s approved used pages to see how much my 24K 2018 GSA Rallye was worth and saw this 37K model for sale. I noticed the dealer and figured it must have been yours so I was right!!!👍🤣👌 I too have thought about the 850 GSA; for me I found it was weighty as the 1200 at standstill from the parallel twin and just found the dimensions too small for my 6ft 100kgs (+) frame so not for me so interested to see how you get on with it; thanks for sharing Bud👌
Having a Aprilia caponord 1200 Rally and now having bought a CRF250l i now see that big cc is not the way but i confess my old Versus 1k beats them all for shits and giggles, far play chains are not a bad thing.
Nice review on the 850GSA. Do you plan to do a review on the Tiger 900. I rode one the other day, and I am having trouble deciding between the 900 or getting another GS or GSA. I loved the Tiger 900. It had only two issues for me. One was the significant wind hitting me in the shoulder area. The other was the moderate heat coming from the motor. I am concerned about how comfy that will be in the 90 degree (f) temperatures we get in Tennessee. Any input would be helpful. Thanks for the great reviews. I love RiderCam TV. Much rather watch you guys than silly sitcoms on TV.
Cost, quality and quantity. It’s down to dealership I reckon. I’ve had several shaft drives, but chains are ok though. I’m going for a Tiger GT Pro, which is similar & Bridge give lifetime warranties.
Steve Bolton - in this instance you can refer to their specific terms and conditions: Terms and Conditions: “The Approved Lifetime Warranty is non-transferable, and is valid only for the customer and bike. It’s issued for brand new bikes purchased from Bridge Motorcycles only. Bike must be serviced at Bridge Motorcycles annually or accordance with the stipulated manufacturer guidelines concerning mileage, using genuine parts. Exclusions: The Approved Lifetime Warranty does not cover death, bodily injury, property or third parties, parts replaced due to wear and tear, the replacement of any part in the course of a normal service, corrosion, damage arising from the continued use of the machine after a fault has become evident, accessories of any kind, cosmetics, motorcycles that have been modified from the original manufacturer specification, motorcycles used for training, hire, competition or racing of any kind. Collection and/or Delivery of the motorcycle in relation to a warranty claim is not included or covered by the warranty and is chargeable. Bridge Motorcycles reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time without notice. Failure to comply with any of the terms and conditions will void the Approved Lifetime Warranty.”
Steve Bolton - i mean, not to be cynical, but it’s a well calculated risk from that dealers point of view given that most bikers change their bikes every 18 months or so... but at least that is an option. If BMW dealers did something similar I’m sure they would increase sales. BMW extended warranties cost a fortune and if you paid a lot for a machine it’s good to have that peace of mind.
Pete Sudhana They don’t say what they consider ’lifetime’ to mean though. I helped a friend set up a Samsung S20 and they expect phones to be replaced every two years!
Nice bike, but the one thing it doesn’t have is a boxer engine. I just love the characteristics of the boxer.. I’m not on about bhp or anything - just pure character
I also picked up my F850 Rallie as I wanted the gold wheels on 4 September and love it so much just done the first 600 services, cost me £140 can you tell me about the seat you have what website you used.
The seat is a cover. It’s a 3D mesh cover for a scooter from eBay. Cost around £5 including postage. There are more expensive one available on the internet.
Dam I hate chains, put shaft on those too 🤓😎🏍💨💨💨💨👍🏻🇨🇦 so why not just get an rt. Just curious, is it the got to be gs or do you really go off road lots
Can’t comment on the GSA but my 850GS was fantastic on a 2 day tour of Snowdonia with pillion. A couple of places I wanted a touch more power but on the whole a surprisingly good pillion machine. Worth noting that she said it was very comfortable.
Looks good Mark, i like many think the days of those massive 1200/1300 cc adventure bikes is coming to an end. Just way too big for taking back in the woods especially as one gets older. I still love my sport touring bike, thinking of adding either a gold wing or Indian Challenger next year to share the mileage. With winter coming in Canada you don't have a choice of parking it in the garage, way to much snow and Ice and -20 to -40 C I keep my ass in the car with heated seats !!!! ride safe !!!!
Nice bike but I don’t think I will trade zxr 1400 in for one of those . Love your videos guy and when to you think we will be able to tour Europe again cheers from Aussie land boys
We are hoping to be touring next year, 2021. I’m down to guide two tours for Magellan Motorcycle Tour’s. The Black Forest and the Pyrenees both in Sept so some way yet.
Looks like a nice bike Mark. Nothing wrong with sticking with what you are comfortable with. There is a joke in there about why your wife is still with you but being a gent I just couldn't do it! 😁 Be interesting to see the fuel comparison between your old and new bike.
I rode one and was impressed with the (Chinese) engine. However, I didn’t like the brakes. I think the biggest loss for you Mark will be the Telelever. You now have to live with fork dive and less stability. Best wishes. Enjoy your new bike !
Less weight and ample power... Sounds like a winner. Best of luck and no better boy to put it through its paces. Looking forward to hearing from you ☺️
Personally I think the 850 is a far better choice than the 1250 anyway, especially if you are riding trails/offroad. That 20-30kg weight difference is huge offroad If I had my choice of new ADV bikes then it would have to be the Africa Twin, but no way I'll ever have one as I simply can't afford it!
Prejudice I know but I just can't see past the Chinese made motor. It doesn't't matter to some but it matters to me. I can't see those lasting as well as the boxer which has one heck of a history of evolution. Why didn't bmw simply produce an 850 boxer? The torque figures speak for themselves as does a test ride. Power to weight might not be much different between it and the 1200 but two up with luggage and you'll begin to wish for the old 1200's low down stomp. Not for me but I hope you get many years of happy use out of it. 👍
I'd be very interested in seeing how a 900 boxer would do. Don't think it would need much reduction in price since it would appeal to a different segment of their market. Might sell more too so as long as the margin is equal if the volume increases they may even make more:)
Hi, where did you get the "tallest" windscreen from? Am in the market for same ;-)
My chain on my zzr1100 has done 80 ,000 miles .l use a 2” paint brush & used diesel oil after most rides ,takes 30 seconds.

I agree, also. Let's add the Yamaha Tenere 700 to that mix as well.
Makes sense. I just tried the Tiger 900 Rally Pro. If I did not already own a R1250GS, the Tiger 900 would be on my short list.
@@GruveToob A close friend just bought the Tiger GT Pro. Loves it. All the extra bits were standard. It is serious competition for the others.

Do they make it for the F850gs yet? I think it's only available for the two 4-cylinder models BMW S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR.

And a nice place to put a tracker, under the seat 🙈
Looks like a nice bike Mark. Nothing wrong with sticking with what you are comfortable with. There is a joke in there about why your wife is still with you but being a gent I just couldn't do it! 😁 Be interesting to see the fuel comparison between your old and new bike.
Buff Rider ha! Currently it’s doing 64mpg compared to 45mpg around town for the 1200.... love it!
@@markholroyd5365 so cost savings on fuel. I can see Toby going the same way when he is due to change.
Beautiful, congrats 👍🏽 the chain isn't as bad to maintain, just think of it as a back rub or a massage for your lovely bike😅
Mmm , how long before Toby gets one ?
Hope you enjoy many Happy and Safe Miles on it 👍🏻🌞
I rode one and was impressed with the (Chinese) engine. However, I didn’t like the brakes.
I think the biggest loss for you Mark will be the Telelever. You now have to live with fork dive and less stability.
Best wishes. Enjoy your new bike !
Max I love it!!!
Do you think you will miss the extra power of the 1200??
Peak GSA 1200 not so far, I love it!!!!
Does it have a diving front suspension 🤭
Ger Brady yes! But if you are gentle then no... ride safe.
Less weight and ample power... Sounds like a winner. Best of luck and no better boy to put it through its paces. Looking forward to hearing from you ☺️
Could of had the new BMW no maintenance chain ?
David Suller they only make it for the sports bikes at the moment but as soon as they make it for this bike....
Mark Holroyd did not realise that, have a great time with your new bike it looks great many more adventures to whatch
Nice bike
Personally I think the 850 is a far better choice than the 1250 anyway, especially if you are riding trails/offroad. That 20-30kg weight difference is huge offroad
If I had my choice of new ADV bikes then it would have to be the Africa Twin, but no way I'll ever have one as I simply can't afford it!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Not India. Bikes a hobby so I have a car for the rain, cold and dark. Nothing to prove.
