Wow the combo of the two is dynamite! 🧨 Brenda is rock, country, jazz, and a few other styles all blended into one. No one else has come along quite like her!
Its literally impossible to not smile when listening to or especially when watching Little Miss Dynamite sing, either then or now. I love this lady, her voice, and her contributions to music! What a dame! They honestly don't make them like her anymore, sadly.
She performed some of her hits like this one thousands of times over the decades and still did them with great energy. It showed great respect for the audience👏👏👏👏
Unbeknownst to her, Clarence Clemons was a big Brenda fan. He heard from band members that she was coming to New York to tape a special and he asked if he could sit in with them. Although Brenda did only two solos for the show, she generously shared the spotlight with him for this number. Clemons thus fulfilled a boyhood dream of being "Boots Randolph" to Brenda Lee. Makes me wish they had done a record or two together.
Brenda is simply the best...singing or being so kind to her fans....somehow she was overlooked and not recognized as the amazing talent who is still performing today at the age of 69. Who else is still here who went professional in 1953? She is the only woman in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and The County Music Hall of Fame. Don Hicks
That early version is a lip sync to the recording. From a Dick Clark show that was on location in Chicago. I wonder if the teen girls in the audience that the cameraman happened to focus on ever saw the video.
A unique talent, an extraordinary voice, the duo with Clarence is excellent, I hope an imitator would appear soon on these talent shows, but Brenda is unique and crosses generations, a fan of Chile, regards
Yes, I think "unique" is the right word. There are some emotional singers who went before her that have some similarities, but not entirely the same. Kelly Clarkson, the first American Idol, has a deep contralto voice like BL, but lacks the creative interpretive skill that Brenda has.
As I recall, Brenda was surprised to learn that Clarence was a big fan. "The Boss", by the way, is a Wanda Jackson fan, For some reason, Brenda was big in the black community with many of her records on the R&B chart, And even today, Kanye West sampled "Sweet Nothins'.
MrCallipygous I'm a long-time Bruce fan along with Clarence and the band, going back to Welcome to Asbury Park, and I've seen them many times. This has always been my favorite song by Brenda Lee going back to when I was 14 and had my first gf. Had no idea she had a following in the black community. Great story, for sure!!!! And lots of personal history for me connected to all this.
A catchy hit from the summer of 1960 (her "I'm Sorry" seemed to peak in this market later, closer to when school started in Sept). Anyway, one morning that summer in the wee hours a bad thunderstorm awoke us all, and I turned on a local AM Top 40 station (KONO 860) to see if anything more severe might be around - only to be greeted by this tune interspersed with all the heavy static crashes from the lightning!
Adavels Thomas I often use the word "unique" when someone asks about the channel and why I am doing it. Really can't come up with a singer with a similar style who sang at this level for so long. This video is 28 years after the recording and the song is better than ever. Good luck to you in your shows!
Brenda Lee that's all you gotta do came to me on a memory wave , I remember watching the 45rpm go round and round as the music came out. and look at her still belting it out, power to you brenda
Little writings of info like this are always so good to read. I was a fan of Brendas from her very beginnings, I played her songs so many times that it drove my mom nuts I'm sure, but the memories are good. Brenda has kept such a wonderful reputation with her fans, and set an example for her peers.
All Class, America will not be this great again. Loved those times. Glad I was born when I was. Greatest generation of all times, but we messed it up also.
Hooray for a 100k! Views, that is. This one is Brenda at full throttle. She was not known for going all out at rehearsals, thereby saving something for the actual performance. I sense that the band was a little surprised at the vocal. You can see the tympani player settling in at 1:18 and looking very ho-hum. When Brenda lets go with a scream you can catch a glimpse of him looking her way and smiling at 1:45 . Kinda like "What just happened here?". Dude, rock happened!
Decca intended it as the A-side! They sent the preview copies to the DJs as the Rock n' roll followup to "Sweet Nothin's". When some DJs flipped it over and played "I'm Sorry" on the air, the switchboards lit up and it was on it's way to #1. Still, after Brenda's lip sync appearance on national TV in the second video, TAYGD shot up to #6. With the #1 and #6 on the chart, 15 year old Brenda Lee was suddenly in Elvis territory.
@wa5iyx Welcome San Antonio... There were more local hits in those days. Another thing affecting local charts, was touring and Brenda toured extensively that year. If I recall correctly, she was on the Dick Clark Caravan when they rolled through Texas in 1960.
On this day in 1960 {June 6th} "That's All You Gotta Do" by Brenda Lee entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #6 and spent 14 weeks on the Top 100... The flip side of the record, "I'm Sorry", fared just a little bit better; it reached #1 {for 3 weeks} and stayed on the Top 100 for almost a half-year {23 weeks}... On Billboard's R&B Singles chart "I'm Sorry" peaked at #4, while "That's All You Gotta Do" reached #19... R.I.P. Mr. Clemons {1942 - 2011}...
Joplin was influenced by the old time blues singers. Ma Rainey and especially Bessie Smith . I think Brenda inspired many young women to perform at a time when there were hardly any women in Rock in 1960 when this song came out.
Me encanta esta bella dama tiene una voz marvillosa la amo ¿k sera de ella ? Debe tener mi edad 74 años porque es de mi epoca me gustaria saber de ella ¡ por favor se los agradeceria de corazon muchas bendiciones
Jimmy Vivino on guitar. He was also musical director of this special. Later, he was on Conan for many years. Sorry, don't know any of the other players.
Vivino is a little out of tune - and he misses the signature figure coming out of the bridge. Clemmons? Stock licks all the way. But Brenda still brings it - big time! And do you know who wrote this song? JERRY REED! This was a B side to "I'm Sorry." I bought this record when it came out - and for the b side - not for "I'm Sorry" which became the runaway hit. The song kept food in Jerry's belly - till he became a star himself.
Prudence Jane The bonus clip is a lip sync to the original recording. Discerning listeners can hear the difference between Hank Garland (guitar) , Boots Randolph (Sax) and the players in the live clip. Brenda didn't always have a great backup band but, fortunately, her recordings feature some all time greats.
@MrCallipygous Sure enough, an Aug 6, 1960 KONO weekly music survey (Sonic 60)on the back has an ad for her Aug 10 appearance here at the Municipal Auditorium - see 1960au06.jpg in the images subdirectory on my site for a scan of that - $2 at the door!
It is interesting that Brenda misses the second stanza: Call me on the telephone Tell me that you're all alone And I'll come a runnin' to you Baby, that's all you gotta do She is WONDERFUL!
to me one of the greatest American female singers ever..she has everything ..voice passion presence and timelessness
Yes indeed, Brenda is pure love in every thing she does.
I LOVE HER SO UNDERRATED
Wow the combo of the two is dynamite! 🧨 Brenda is rock, country, jazz, and a few other styles all blended into one. No one else has come along quite like her!

Its literally impossible to not smile when listening to or especially when watching Little Miss Dynamite sing, either then or now. I love this lady, her voice, and her contributions to music! What a dame! They honestly don't make them like her anymore, sadly.

Love seeing Brenda perform , what excitement . 👍🔥❤️❤️
She performed some of her hits like this one thousands of times over the decades and still did them with great energy. It showed great respect for the audience👏👏👏👏

Little Miss Dynamite & the Fabulous, Late, Clarence Clemons on sax!
brenda, sos lo más grande. !!! The best
Unbeknownst to her, Clarence Clemons was a big Brenda fan. He heard from band members that she was coming to New York to tape a special and he asked if he could sit in with them. Outrageous mega talent !!!

This is my go to every night, just fabulous and the little girl at the end is adorable 🥰

This is just perfect! thank you very much.
Clarence Clemons was one of a kind....
this always cheers me up😊
Wow and super wow....my favorite Brenda Lee song with the Big Man himself. This is so coooool. !!!!

Yes, a great performance; I wonder did Janis Joplin get her inspiration from Brenda?
Joplin was influenced by the old time blues singers. Ma Rainey and especially Bessie Smith . I think Brenda inspired many young women to perform at a time when there were hardly any women in Rock in 1960 when this song came out.

Bill Bright Geographically, the top three countries viewing this video are Mexico, Chile and Spain. Conclusion: Brenda Lee's appeal is global.

un petit bout de femme mais un géant de la chanson

You can just hear the jump blues and black gospel church in that music! And now we know where Springsteen gets a lot of his best ideas....
👏🏻⭐👏🏻⭐👏🏻⭐👏🏻
who were the other band members anyone
Jimmy Vivino on guitar. He was also musical director of this special. Later, he was on Conan for many years. Sorry, don't know any of the other players.

When you have a perfect sound and pretty face you don’t need to makeup and don’t need to be naked
her cheeks are so cute for a youngster

Jerry Reed wrote this one.
Obviously hadn't lost any of her sass or rhythm!
This was dreadful. Creepy.
Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!'😡😡😡😡😣😡👻
