It took me while to get used to Elena's singing, but I love how she brought her own style into this role. And finally somone who can pronounce Buenos Aires without faking it.
Her version of Evita has aged so well! So happy cause she deserves recondition for an incredible run as Eva.

Unlike Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone, (As great as they are), Elena Roger is from Argentina. I saw this whole show back in 2006, she was electrifying!

I don't care about her accent and how authentic it is and how it feels home to some people. It's the acting and singing that matters. Who cares if other actresses didn't have the accent or saying it accordingly. It's how they play it and how they interpret the song. How's it's said is how it said you can't blame them where they are from. This still sound good

The show has not announced a closing date yet plus it sales are really quite good it has nothing to worry about. People forget show dont close on reviews they close do to the peoples want for a show and the people apparently wanna see this show.

its so horrible that the show just opened and they already announced the closing date as December 30! the reason it's closing is because people are comparing the show to the movie! The movie doesnt even compare to the brilliance Elena Roger gives playing this role!
I'm seeing the Broadway revival of "Evita" on March 12, 2012, its first preview. Patti LuPone's interpretation is her own. Elena's way of singing is hers to make as she can. I'll be curious how it turns out.

@shelllee925 era la tercera vez en el día que lo hacían. Después de las dos funciones, el elenco se trasladó a hacer esto para CIN. Nadie canta en vivo en CIN. En la obra sí, y corría por todo el escenario y ni se le notaba la falta de aire. Creo que debe haber sido playback pq ya era mucha exigencia vocal para un sólo día dos funciones enteras y esto.
I would love to see this live musical again but as it was scored in 1979. Why did they make changes in the way the songs were sang and the music was played?
Why did they wait six years to transfer this to the states?

She is a phenomenal Piaf. I like her much better in that role. However, I don't like the show too much as it shines a negative light on Piaf.

The tempo of the song is much slower than the original Broadway production. I am sure it is much easier for Ms. Roger to sing, but I prefer the more frenetic pace of the original.

Eva Peron is Argentinian. But "Evital" is a British musical. It was originally written in English for English speaking audience. The language in the musical has English colloquialism and expressions. It requires a fluent English speaker to deliver those nuances. Casting a Spanish speaking Argentinian actress who doesn't possess that English delivery skill is distracting to watch and hear. "Evita" is art not reality and the performer doesn't have to be authentic Argentinian.
WTF...the soul of this musical is Argentinian, Bizet captures the spanish spirit on Carmen opera and he wasn't Spaniard...but you are WRONG....Lloyd Webber isn't Argentinian and neither captures the soul...

My family is from Argentina, and I can say first-hand that Argentinians are almost irrational when it comes to cheering for their own. Just because Elena Roger is Argentinian does not make her suitable for the roll. She is too old, is not particularly attractive, and has a hideous screeching singing voice like a goat. However, she is a good actress and dancer. She is much better suited for portraying Edith Piaf, but I guess since she's not French it doesn't matter?
Jay Adeff Evita wasn't that actracttive either, have you seen photos of her? I think Elena's voice was suitable for the role because of Evita's voice tone when she talked and stuff. Anyways, this is all a fictional tale that british people wrote. Nothing of history here, so yeah it doesn't really matter that she's Argentinian. At least she can say Buenos Aires, 9 de Julio and Corrientes correctly.
Maybe having family from Argentina doesn’t give you all the knowledge about Argentina or Evita. If you do some research on Evita you’ll see the peculiarity on her voice. Her speeches and how she said everything in a very loud tone (very political, in a way). In the musical there’s even a line by Che saying “she didn’t say much but she said it loud”. Regarding Evita’s acttractivness, I don’t particularly believe she’s attractive (though that’s quite a subjective thing to state). I think Elena was perfect for Evita.
1.The real Eva was not good looking at all, Elena is prettier. 2. Elena can pronunciate propperly RIO DE LA PLATA, the others couldn't... So instead of criticizing someone who has real talent, ask yourself what's your talent (if you have any)...

I just saw her in Evita on Broadway a couple of weeks ago and she was awful! She sings like a goat and screams the high notes. Blech! The audience was full of Argentinian tourists who cheered like crazy for her. Go figure. Thank goodness she didn't get a Tony nomination.
