- Welcome back to our journey through the history of opera! Today, we will explore the fascinating world of Gregorian Chant and polyphony. In the year 800 Charlemagne established Gregorian Chant as the official chant of Christianity. With this, liturgical services were standardized throughout his empire and the development of musical writing was boosted.
Over time, this writing evolved and allowed the writing of a new texture, Polyphony. The Note Dame School of Music, created in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, played an extremely important role in the development of this new texture.
Polyphonic music enchanted listeners from its first manifestation. It became predominant in the late Middle Ages and throughout the Renaissance.
