  • Sliding glass doors are great at bringing the outdoors in... unless they don't lock or latch. then anybody and everybody can come right in. Our Pella sliding glass door suddenly quit latching. So we had to dig into the guts of the locking mechanism to diagnose the issue.
First we had to remove the handle which became no small task to begin. We had to drill out the set screw to be able to remove the door handle cover. Once the cover was removed, the door handle was easily taken off after removing two long anchoring screws that connected both sides of the glass door handle.
The issue with our door was that the locking knob separated from the locking shaft that controls the entire door latching mechanism. it took a few minutes of troubleshooting the door latch to discover just how it locked the door. after that we could see that a misaligned door caused the locking lever or knob to pop off the shaft.
All we had to do was push the locking lever onto the shaft, secure the handle and we were good to go.

Hello, I have a similar Pella door with a similar issue, however the knob and shaft are both good, but the lock fails and it’s stuck being locked preventing the door from shutting. Unable to close door now. Any idea on what that could be?

I remember having a similar issue but it’s been a long time.
I think I just had to jiggle the locking mechanism. Sorry - but it’s a distant memory. But I remembered thinking I broke the lock but it just need some manipulation.
Worst case I’d take to handles and lock off- to get a better picture how it operates.
Hope that helps - thx for watching!

I have the same problem though the shaft eventually slips free of the knob. The friction is not enough to keep it engaged. I've tried gluing it in the past but that eventually fails as well. Any other thoughts on how to permanently fix the failing mechanism?

      Hey Christian…,
They do sell the whole handle mechanism online… best for long term to replace it all w/ new.
      Thx for watching!

I have almost the same problem but the hardware on the latch broke, any idea how to get that out?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Рік тому

      Hey Hannah,
I haven’t had that exact problem. You could call Pella ( or door manufacturer for tips. )
Also look for a parts diagram on the web site. Sometimes that will give you clues as too how it goes in.
The handle is integral to the lock mechanism so that has to come off first.
If you can order a new lock mechanism, sometimes you can look at the parts and see how they fit together, then figure how they would go in - and thus how it would come out.
Treat it like a puzzle. It had to be assembled at the factory. So it can be disassembled.
Look for hidden / hard to find screws. If none, then it may just be pushed into the door and held in place by the handle screws.
      Hope that helps.
      Thx for watching.

@@Housebarons I figured it out, thanks! Turns out you have to remove the trim then remove a the board that's on the front with 6 screws then you can get to the hardware.

I just had the same thing happen with our door. How did you manage to access the internal mechanism and fix it? Did you happen to create a video when you repaired yours? I tried reaching out to Pella and they've been useless so far
