Man, his voice sounds every bit as powerful as the day they recorded this. You’d never know he was having health problems from listening to this. What a creative powerhouse. RIP, Pat.
RIP Pat, it’s a shame he had such a rough time with his health the last few years of his life but his voice never wavered, he sounded just as good here as he did in 1986.
This sounds almost exactly like the recorded version. Pat may look a lot different up he still sounds the same. RIP Pat DiNizio. One of the few rock stars I actually had a chance to meet in person.
He was my radio colleague and friend at XM radio in New York in the mid-2000's. His talent, wit, and intelligence never faltered. This band, and this song, this performance; spot-on. Damn. We lost one of New Jersey's- and America's- great rock and roll poets. Rest in peace, Pat. Thank you for posting this, Tim.
RIP Pat DiNizio God Speed! Poor guy was partially paralyzed at this time. Couldn't play a guitar anymore or even hold a mike. He suffered during the last 5 years of his life. No more suffering Pat and your playing a guitar again for the Angels!
He lost everything with his health issues. Some say he was homeless. I do know the band continued to play with him and donated all monetary to DiNizio upon his death. Every show was like an unadvertised benefit for Pat. He suffered badly.
Came up on my feed today, one of the first concerts my wife of 30 years went to together…unfortunately my wife passed 6/8/23..great memories. Peace to all.
I have rediscovered Smithereens thanks to UA-cam, and their music was definitely on the soundtrack of my life in the early 1990's, but I was jamming out to them from cassette player in my 1990 VW Golf. RIP Pat, complete gentleman.
I used to see Pat all the time at the QuickChek in Scotch Plains NJ. He was always kind enough to stop and have a quick chat. He was a very down to earth, nice guy.
You can tell it was hard for him to perform at that time, but you can also tell the joy he had doing it. Thank you to Pat and the Band for so many memories, you have all been a part of the soundtrack of my life. Rest in peace Pat.
I will Say it again This will be missed a true FAN Band. These guys played anywhere and everywhere the fans needed them. FYI we still need you guys., RIP Pat
One of my favorite days in my 45 years in radio? Driving Pat and Jim around Fairmont and Morgantown, WV. Did an interview, went to a few comic book stores, they met my mom and dad in their driveway and I got yelled at by their manager for getting them to the soundcheck late. One of America's greatest bands....
Great memories of seeing the band at The Strand, The Roxy, & the original House of Blues on Sunset in SoCal. I just can’t watch this band without Pat. Marshall Crenshaw was great in the 80s but to hear him fronting the Smithereens just makes me think tribute band and his voice isn’t what it used to be. RIP Pat. You were amazing. Can hardly wait to hear the all star band in the next life😎👍
I saw this band live at the Belly up Tavern in Solana Beach California in the 90's. I took my nephew to see them. My nephew Jesse at the time was the drummer for a Carlsbad Ca. based band called Jack and the Rippers. He and I loved this performance! What a great memory. RIP Jesse, RIP Jack, RIP Pat.
October 12, 1955 Plainfield, New Jersey - December 12, 2017 (aged 62)Summit, New Jersey, One year seems like a month ago.. R.I.P. - Rock In Peace.. Our beloved Pat D.
RIP Pat! Thanks for the music. And thanks for giving me the opportunity (through your great music) to reconnect with my estranged dad back in my teenage years.
Knew Pat as a young man his voice never failed him genuinely a nice guy. Thanks for the memories and especially sharing stuffed cabbage and shots of Jezynowka on a cold winter day at the old Polish club in Carteret.
Saw em at One Step Beyond in Santa Clara, Ca....1990ish. What a night....clove cigarettes.....packed crowd.... jamming music......multiple encores....they gave the audience everything they had and then some. RIP Pat.
Saw 3 times thru the yrs, just a flat out great band! Feb 1, 1990- Warfield, SF CA, June 1994- The Fillmore, SF, CA, June 2007- Sonora Fairgrounds, Sonora, CA Hope Pat is up there jam’n with the stars - RIP
Old Style Rock at its best!! As soon as I heard this song, I loved it. I bought their CD and still listen today. Wished there were more bands at this caliber.
Many little magic moments in that video, I've loved the Smitereens since the start and they are still on my playlist all these years later. The songs really resonate with me. RIP Pat
You Are Beautiful Pat. You Always Will Be. God Love You Forever🌹 Rest Well..When You're Not Rock'in. And Don't Forget Your "Mad Magazine's". See You Down The Road🙏🌹🙏
I was doing the hard rock/commercial metal club circuit in the southwest back in the late 80s early 90s Van Halen, Skid Row ect. We always left a slot open for "A girl like you". filled the dance floor every time. Great American rock band.
In 2002 I got to see The Smithereens at a local bar here in Mobile Alabama called Unknown Jerome's. They were great...sounded just like I was listening to the CD. They opened with 'A Girl Like You" & closed with "Behind The Wall Of Sleep". It's been almost 20 years since that night in 2002 & I still remember it, BECAUSE THE SMITHEREENS WERE JUST THAT DAMN GOOD!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Pat called me before he died and we had a nice conversation and he said his health was not good and then said at the end that God told him we were going to jam in Heaven together someday
Now that is so cool! These guys I always knew were such normal average dudes.....good band, great original lyrics and style! Always have been one my favorites...thanks for the great memories jammin out to your music! Rockers forever!
Yeah. I stumbled across a posting about the BBQ and couldn't believe we got tickets. We drove from Michigan and Indiana to check it out. The other guy that came with me won a guitar signed by the band. All guys were cool and gracious hosts. it was DEFINITELY a high point in life. :) :) :)
I saw an add about it a few years ago when it was too late, I was going to try to go the following year but could never find info again. I couldn't believe Pat had people from the general public to his house.
He does it periodically but not every year by any means. This was 2016 and the one before was in 2012 or 2011....he does not want to piss off the neighbors too much :)
@@FanOfFab4 I read somewhere that Pat wanted to establish a "museum" to music of his peers and use his home as the base. Although he collected money to sponsor this, the amount needed fell way short. I also read that Pat returned ALL the money to sponsors. Classy. Can you confirm this story?
I saw them at big outdoor thing in Denver in 1995. Skynyrd got rained out but Smithereens played earlier and were great. This has always been my favorite song by them. Like that chord progression. RIP Pat
I saw The Smithereens, the Knack and the Outfield together in 1 show maybe 15-20 years ago. Now sadly all 3 of these bands have lost their lead singers. I am so glad I went to that show. It was a great night! R.I.P. Pat, Doug and Tony.
dude's voice really held up and sounds as good as it did 30 years ago really miss the guy .... one of the great underrated guitar bands of rock history
rip pat. see you guys in class of nuke high left an indelible impression on my youth. a weird looking Italian guy with amazing stage presence. you will not be soon forgotten.
More bbq videos omg thank you soooo much. This is the best part of UA-cam. Watching personal video of the man who made me proud to be a bass baritone. Back in the 80’s this was the band I wished I sang for. Still do. RIP Pat. You are still having positive effects on this world.
I have to admit it, every time I hear these guys, I get that cold chill, my eyes get "misty" and I feel sad that Pat is no longer with us.
Agreed every time I hear them. A heavier version of the Beatles 🪁☂️💕💕💕
This sounds almost exactly like the recorded version. Pat may look a lot different up he still sounds the same. RIP Pat DiNizio. One of the few rock stars I actually had a chance to meet in person.
Rick, I got to meet Pat at the Coach House in August of 2013 before their concert. Very nice, humble man; so sorry he's been gone over 2 years now.

Neil Ouellette Well said Neil...not sure many people knew of Pats health issues...nice to see you write this...R.I.P. Pat Dinizio.
He lost everything with his health issues. Some say he was homeless. I do know the band continued to play with him and donated all monetary to DiNizio upon his death. Every show was like an unadvertised benefit for Pat. He suffered badly.
Neil Ouellette That's so sad to hear..he's probably in a better place now..thanks for passing that on.
Quality post.

Pat's vocals were still strong. And the band here was as powerful as ever. My top favorite song of their's.

So Sorry To Hear...Much Love...I Still Do Your Tunes...Rest In Peace... Much Love To Pat And Everybody...
Such under-rated song writing/playing, brilliant.......maybe one of America's finest talents.
Some song writing the Beatles would have killed for🌩️😡🥹
I❤ the Smithereens!!
I've been a fan since I first heard them. Such a loss. I'll dream of them Behind a Wall of Sleep.
I am from New Jersey and had the plessure of seeing the band and meeting Pat many times(over 15 times)

2 rockin' Rickenbackers, sweet!
I want them to play in my backyard!
They were the best band out of New Jersey, ever! Timeless songcraft!

he leave us so soon? I really miss him.
RIP, Pat.
