2013 VW Beetle Window and Door Problems

  • 2013 VW Beetle window will not lower to allow doors to be opened when it is cold outside. VW designed the 2013 VW Beetle doors such that the window must lower about an inch to open the door. Once door is closed the window automatically shuts. This operation is required as this VW does not have a door frame so the window must lower to clear the top window molding mounted on the body. We used our VW Beetle all Spring and Summer with no problem. This Fall when the cold weather began the window does not lower the required inch when you push the unlock button on the remote or push the door handle button and you can not get in the car. VW USA says they are aware of the problem, but there is no fix. They recommend we do not use our new VW Beetle when it is cold outside which effectively prevents use of our new car during the 4-5 months of winter in Rhode Island. Dealers we have taken it to record that they are unable to open and VW Beetles or VW EOSs on cold morning as they all require the window to lower an inch so door can be opened and the window does not do so when it is cold. It is not right that VW America refuses to buy back a car that we in RI can not use during the winter.

    I've got a 2013 and watching the video shows me that the lady is putting her finger in the recessed dimple on the outside of the handle. That LOCKS the car !! To unlock, you merely put your hand on the handle as If you are going to open. There is an UNLOCK sensor on the handle back there. Also you can pull the door open without damaging anything and then get in and open the widow all the way down and then close the doo , then roll it all the way upr. This RESETS the mechanism and your window will be fixed. It might be a power interruption that cause the window NOT to drop the half inch or so. But I have found the above procedure will work. I've used it dozens of times. Hope this helps.

    I live in the desert, in Las Vegas NV. One of the HOTTEST places in the USA and my 2013 Beetle does this all year long. Not just a cold thing guys! It's 100 out here and it still does this. :/

    I live in Northern Michigan. Nine times out of ten, wiggling the window glass back and forth at the top will free it and it will drop as designed. If wiggling the glass doesn't work, I do as others who have already commented, starting the car and directed heat at the glass. Minor inconvenience to me for owning a Bug. And a far more interesting car than the cookie cutter fleet designs coming out of Asia or North America.

    For those who encounter this issue, get some 3M Dry Silicone aerosol. Do not use "wet" silicone as these will leave you with a messy window glass. With the window lowered and door open, lightly spray the seals with the 3M Dry.
    With the window down, use a suitable plastic wedge to expose the bottom sill exterior seal and apply a light spray of the lubricant. Allow it to dry 10 minutes.
    In ice conditions, you can use an old credit card to free the glass from the perimeter rubber seals if they are stuck to the glass. I have seen that getting stuck is much less problematic if the seals are lubricated lightly every few months.
    If you are seated in the car, roll down both windows before doing the right side. Close both windows at the same time using the driver switches...you'll see how much better the lubricated side moves!
    Been working on new VWs over 21 years. And yes, I love my 2013 Beetle 2.

    This has happend to my beetle but it is very easy to fix. All you have to do is gently pull the door even if the window is up and it will not hurt anything. You just then have to let the car warm up can wiggle the window up and down.

      Hello Hubert - So sorry to hear about your Beetle. It is unbelievable that a car designed in Germany - where I am fairly certain it gets very cold in the winter - has such a stupid design.
      I hope you can resolve this issue but I gave up when VW America would not help me at all and I traded in the Beetle for a Mazda3 with normal windows.

    WHen you finally get the door opened... maybe a smear of petroleum gel along the seal will prevent it sticking. I'd be interested to learn how you got on with VW and their preposterous suggestion that you don't use the car when it's cold.

    It's been a while but was the problem solved? I notice ice on the door gap! I have a VW and when it snows here in NJ I make sure I brush the car as soon as snows over. And shovel the tires area. One day I didn't shovel next thing I knew the tpms lit up. The snow on the tires had made them lost pressure! Blessings!

    I totally agree this situation sucks. I really loved driving my Beetle and do miss the fun. I really think if you have to crawl through the hatchback, there is something seriously wrong with the car's design - as was admitted by both VW America customer service and 3 VW dealerships. What a shame!
    Good luck!

    We have had similar issues with our 2013 VW Beetle Turbo Convertible and we live in a warm weather area (Las Vegas). The window system came off the track on the drivers side twice since we purchased it (about 16K miles on it now). When that happens you have front window glass on/overlapping rear window glass, and its a danger that it will shatter when you open and close the doors. Here is the big issue we currently have: wife put down the convertible top yesterday, and it will not go back up. It starts to go up and then stops and a warning light flashes on the speedometer. Now the cars roof is stuck down and we are about to drop 20 degrees and they are calling for some rare desert rain. May have to close it manually and that seems like a major operation in itself. Love the car, but in typical VW fashion - it's loaded with technical issues!! Any advice out there?

    Just open the door. It won’t damage the seal... I have a 2013 VW Beetle have had it for 3 years, no issues in the winter always parked outside, I live in Indiana and it has been frozen everyday this past week. it is annoying but just rip open the seal it is rubber and won’t fall off or break, mine is fine and as I said I have done this for 3 winters so far with no issue. Once you start the car you can open and close the window freely, it has a super strong motor.

    I have a 2017, and i live in canada where it gets very cold, i have this problem but it really doesnt bother me.. just open the door.. it will still open fine, once in and started i just roll the window down like and inch to close the door and roll it back up and it goes right back into the seal fine.. my only problem is a few times when its very cold out in the -35 weather, sometimes when leaving the vehicle and locking it, the window will not go back up into the seal so theres that like half inch gap but its not inconveniencing me in any way

    I wish I had seen this before I purchased mine. I was told by Anne at VW Canada and that I have to PAY for a diagnostic to see what is wrong with the windows. Seriously?? The car is not even a year old! I purchased it in 2013 December. You are right, Germany has snow... however the 2013 Beetles are assembled in Mexico... no snow. Hopefully through your UA-cam video, this message will get across. Good luck!

      Karen Carlson Hey Karen, luckily so far our winter has been mild. The few times it did freeze in November I had to force the door open. I now park it in the garage and if there is condensation I drop the windows a little so I don't get any surprises before leaving for work in the morning. But I agree 110% with you, this is my LAST Volkswagen

      Hi Wendy-Lucky you to have a garage! How do you drop the windows and get them to stay open? when I would close the door, the windows automatically went up.

    • @Wendy-Cl0ved3s

      Hey Karen Carlson, what I do is I leave the windows slightly open before I lock the car. Not too much just enough so its not touching the rubber seal. The only thing with that is if you don't have a garage and it starts to snow if there is wet snow then you may get snow in the car. Happy New Year to you as well!

    This is not just a beetle issue, I had that happen on a dodge stratus rt also it happened on my 2006 beetle convertible and now on my 2013 beetle I have found a thin spatula with I insert at the bottom of the window loosens the ice grip and the window slides right down, also if it does no budge just open the door anyway, start the car and point the vent at the corner near the mirror, it will heat it up and the window will go down, I have never damaged my window doing this at all, drive to work with the window wedged open and it's fine once it heats up. Yes it's an issue but short of covering the window seal at the bottom of the window every night I don't have a fix

    Same problem with ours. We saved for 12 years to get my wife the new car of her dreams. She's crying right now because her "baby" is sitting outside in the sleet with the door open because it won't shut until it's thawed out. It's after midnight and we have to work in the morning. But instead we're waiting for the car to thaw out. What a nightmare. How could VW have possibly thought this was acceptable?

    • @KT-wr3cv
      @KT-wr3cv  9 років тому

      Is your car still under warranty? If so, call your State's Attorney General's office and see if you have a Lemon Law. We do but I needed a vehicle and couldn't deal with the VW dealerships who would not let me bring the car in for the 4th visit which would qualify for the Lemon Law to kick in.
      It it totally unacceptable that VW does not stand behind its product. We in RI/New England are in the throes of one of the coldest February's ever and have even set a new record for snowfall. I commented this week to my husband that it is a relief to know that I do not have my Beetle any longer since, considering the sub-zero temps, I would never be able to rely on it. But, I do still miss the fun of driving it - it's just not worth the aggravation. I waited ten years for a new car and it was so disappointed. It's not as if the Beetle was a cheap car to purchase!
      Good luck to you.

    I have a 2014 convertible Beetle and IF I can get the windows to go down so the door will open then they wont close. If the weather is bad you cant have windows that don't shut. I took it to the dealer here in VA and was told there is a reset sequence you can do to fix it, but that is only if you can get in the car.

    • @KT-wr3cv
      @KT-wr3cv  9 років тому

      Hi Kristen
      I know this is definitely not a funny situation, but I did have to laugh at the dealer's response on how to fix the window problem. Yup, getting in the car would help!
      Interesting to hear that you are in VA (where I came from) and even there it's cold enough to have the malfunctioning window issue.
      When I see a yellow Beetle I remember how much I loved it - and then say "never again".
      I hope you can resolve your problem but I know VW won't be of much help.

    I just bought my 2013 Beetle a month ago... noticed this problem after our first snow fall... the next morning my windows were frozen shut...My solution now is to lower the driver side window just enough to clear the molding as you open and close the door so it can clear the molding without damaging anything (locking and setting alarm at night).... in the morning the door opens freely...after the car warms up the widows move up and down without any problems... This issue sucks :0(

    • @SomeHoney575
      @SomeHoney575 9 років тому +1

      My last post doesn't work because when you shut the door the window just rolls back up on it's own. Probably because it's not rolled down enough to stay open a tad...I actually came up with a better way (since I last posted) to get into my car when the windows are frozen shut... my cars trunk is actually a hatchback as I can fold the back seat down flat. The next time the windows are frozen shut I'm just getting in through the hatchback and starting the car that way... if I let it warm up nice I'm hoping the windows will roll down like they're supposed to when you pull the handle for the door... I don't know if it will work but that's my new plan...lol... and you're right with a 2013 vehicle we should not have to deal with this but I really like my Beetle otherwise :0)

    I bought my 2013 in Oct last year and trouble with windows started at first frost. I have taken car to dealer several times and alls I get is "unable to duplicate" They did finally get regional rep out and they gave me supposed stronger window motors last April but guess what its still happening , it happened this past Friday. With my car I can hear and see the window drop but a little struggle with cold then when I open my door the window pops up and I cant close my door because the window is above the rubber stripping. This is a safety hazard as far as Im concerned because I cant drive it with my door ajar. One time it took 25 minutes with full blower heat on till window would go down enough to shut door properly. My car has made me late several times to work.Also if your alone in a lot after dark and its cold your stuck in a bad situation. I have finally decided to pursue lemon laws . VW customer advocates are not advocates.Its a shame cause this is my 5th Beetle so much for looking after loyal customers. Goodluck to everyone.

      This is because the window is frozen shut at the bottom. I use a spray bottle with windshield washer fluid and spray the base of the window along the rubbers seal, once I open my door I take an old Timmie's gift card and slide it in between the window and the rubber seal. This will let it go up and down. Not a mechanical issue, a poor design issue that can't handle the cold weather unfortunately.

    • @dadbod_training
      @dadbod_training 6 років тому

      Erin Sarapnickas There is some ice in the door or seal that's pinching the window. The pinch sensor is active, I know because the window rolls up and down very slowly. Using winter windshield wiper fluid may help, I'll give it a try!

    • @dadbod_training
      @dadbod_training 6 років тому

      Jennifer Pena The window was stuck down because the pinch sensor was active. I reset it by rolling the window all the way up, then press up twice in a row. The door was frozen shut a few days ago, I had to use an ice scraper to free the ice all the way around the window, then the door opened. All I can suggest is keep a bottle of winter wiper fluid, as previously suggested, and an ice scraper in your trunk. VW won't do anything about it.

      I am sorry to hear you have issues with your VW even in warm weather. I had no real cooperation from VW. They had a bad attitude and I got rid of my Beetle as soon as I could. How they could not acknowledge the issue when even my dealer agreed there was a real problem, I don't know. Are we supposed to believe that Beetles residing in Germany in the winter don't have any problems? My only regret is that I didn't keep it long enough to "stick it to them" when the diesel fraud came out. I know someone who was reimbursed $3,000 for hers. I would never buy another VW product. I have a Tuscon and love it. The Beetle was fun to drive...in the summer.

      Michelle ishappy Hi Michelle - How frustrating (again). Can you believe they just won't take responsibility for the issue of the windows? Not to mention the 2015's are still the same design. Such a shame. You can always contact your State Attorney General's office if you have a Lemon Law. I did and they were a great help but then I traded in the Beetle anyway.
      By the time they help, if they do, it will be spring! Good luck & God Bless!
      Have a great weekend, Karen

      In video you mentioned Lemon law, do you still own car? Im in a situation now in NJ with windows.NO WAY should a 2013 vehicle do this.. The rep you mentioned Tronda H needs a head cat scan for even suggesting you not use your car in the winter.

      C Hugg Hi - No we traded the Beetle for a 2014 Mazda 3. Much as I thought it was fun to drive the Beetle, I could not believe Tronda thought I should not drive it in the winter, it was "design flaw" and VW would not stand behind replacing it. Her attitude and the all of the local dealerships attitudes convinced us we would never again buy a VW. We don't have a garage here in RI for our cars and even if we did, what if I was out late at night and could not get into my car to drive home? I hope you can resolve your issue; I found that the RI Attorney General's Office for lemon cars was very helpful but I was just too worried about this happening when the car was out of warranty to keep it. And, seriously, climbing into the car through the trunk was not an option as someone with the same problem suggested.
      Good Luck and thank you for telling me you also had issues. Karen

    Park it in a garage. The window is frozen in place. It isn't the system. It's the fact that the car is frozen. A lot of cars have unframed windows like the Beetle does and you'll have the same issue with those cars if you leave the car out in the wintertime. It's a fancy vehicle. It isn't a Toyota truck. That doesn't make the car a lemon. It makes it a car that needs to be kept in a climate controlled environment when it isn't in use.

    I bought my wife a new 2017 VW Dune. We live in Sudbury, Ontario. Even though I've spent over $800 for a car starter, it often takes a very, very long time to thaw the windows to enter the car. There are several WEEKS in winter too cold to warm up enough to lower the window. The dealer said it wouldn't hurt the car to force the door open without lowering the window. When the door is then shut, the glass is pushed out leaving 1/2 inch gaps for snow and rain to come in. I'm sure this would lead to permanent damage. The reality is that the VW Dune is not designed for subzero weather. Buy something else instead.

    Use aerosol de-icer . If you park & the window is wet wipe off the top that goes into the gasket , it helps . I use aerosol de-icer on frosty or snowy mornings . I clean snow off the car , scrape any ice on top of the door & spray the de-icer around the window & it frees up in a few seconds .

    Isn't this an issue with most cars which have frameless doors? My mother owns a 2009 Peugeot 407 coupe with frameless doors which always get stuck when it's icy out. We always thought it was pretty normal and defrost them with hot water and de-icing spray. It'd never occur to me that it could be a design fault.

    • @karencarlson5921
      @karencarlson5921 9 років тому

      Definitely a design flaw although considering the VW is designed in Germany, how stupid is that? I know they are built in Mexico but now that I've had responses from Poland, Canada and the US we know it's the car not us.

    • @TRASHoftheTITANS
      @TRASHoftheTITANS 9 років тому

      Karen Carlson I see what you're saying. Southern Germany typically has very long, cold winters so you think they would've taken it into consideration. While the doors on my mother's car stick in the winter, they are quite easy to release as the windows only go a centimetre or so into the frame, nowhere near an inch as you mentioned. That is a rather silly design.
      But on my mother's car, you have to pull on the door handle for the window to go down. I know you've no doubt tried that already, but what happens when you do? Is there any movement at all?

  • @vixenxc
    @vixenxc 7 років тому +1

    well great comment from VW, I have a 1999 beetle and replaced the electric window cable etc, The problem is the windows and anything important should be manual , I had to go threw the trunk to shut open the doors and shut off the alarm. I have eliminated a few things and I believe with VW and most of the new vehicles as long as they move back and forward you have a good thing going because all the alarm lights are going to be on and gauges not work etc lol. So when a person buys get the least options possible , I believe most people could use the exercise of rolling the window up and down by hand and locking the door by hand etc . In your case I would disconnect the electric and rip the damn molding off so it can be driven lol.

    to three, then close. Another suggestion was to roll it down, hold the knob down to a count of 10'then roll it up and continue holding the knob up to a count of 10. Either one should work but if both are not working and you can't get in that sucks!! Nothing in the Manuel addresses this and when I called the 800 number it was not even suggested that I try this!!!!!

      It's All an experiment I have the exact same edition. Live in the bitter cold of the Midwest, window “freezes” in place but as I stated in a comment above it is a rubber seal pulling the door open does not hurt it and the minute you get in the car the motor is strong enough in the window to open and close them where they need to go. Normally after the initial freeze it doesn’t get caught again till it snows again.

    Yes, very good video. I've had the same issue this evening in London (27th Feb 2018). Our 2016 model Beetle's windows would not lower after today's cold weather (-2.5 %). I wonder how people get on with this issue in Germany. VW need to address this. For the dealer to advise not driving the vehicle in cold weather renders the car not worth owning. Perhaps VW should point this out to all potential new buyers? Oh, and maybe reimburse all existing owners....?

    It's not so much a design flaw as it is lack of treatment before the freeze. Granted, I have not run into this yet myself with a customers car, but since other car manufacturers use similar window designs... this is not just a VW issue. Gently lift the seal to free the window and once the window is down, try to lube / treat the seal. Some people have used vaseline with good success... others use www.autogeek.net/1z-einszett-rubber-care-stick.html (based on a quick google search for stuck windows).

    • @KT-wr3cv
      @KT-wr3cv  10 років тому

      The dealers have lubricated the seal numerous times. It does not work. If it was as simple as some how holding this very stiff seal out and away from the whole length of the window top VW America and the 3 different dealers would have done that or suggested that. The window does not go down the inch needed. The seal is not holding the window up from doing that. We do not know what is not working, but the Dealers and VW America say live with it and do not use your car when it is cold.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS 10 років тому
