    I got a job on a Hyundai that the customer did themselves. They did a pretty good job assembly wise, only it didn't have compression. I had to get all necessary parts from the dealer. The shims that go into those buckets are only at dealer. Customer used all new valves and seated them, but they didn't seal because of out of spec shims . After all head problems fixed compression was back but had a vvt code. Dowel pin for phaser was bent, after a new pin it ran like a champ. At the end of day however all of that time and parts involved ended up being more than they paid for the car.

    When you’re sharing your process on the you tube, you’re always going to have people judge your judgements about how to fix the vehicle. But you know your customers, Ivan. So doing what’s best for them, while you make a few bucks along the way is what matters.
    Our shop on the other hand, would never do a job like that (being a $105/hr, creates expectations from the customer)! High mileage, heavy carbon build up, reusing gaskets….all of which creates some risk that this endeavour will amount to a waste of time and money. Our attitude (right or wrong): if you can’t afford to fix it right, fix it some where else. We just don’t want the liability!
    Having said that, people need someone like you to do these things for them. Someone who will make the best of a less than perfect situation. Hats off to you sir! My hope for you though Ivan, is that you don’t get just as burnt as that valve doing things this way!✌️

      Today's younger crowd have very little pride in their workplace. Seems that the OEM parts were charged for and the parts house who is in contract with Rockauto decided to send out cheaper parts in hopes to make a higher profit. In doing so they sent completely rock parts !
      I hope Ivan makes this a complaint and that parts store is scrutinized by rockauto for accuracy and delivery of customers past orders. If they have a trend of this, out they need to go from association with Rockauto.

I think that you did the right thing for the customer, I can imagine that if you had put a short block or crate motor in it, the transmission or some other major component could have promptly failed. HEY Ivan, thanks for all the great videos, as a Moderator over at DDTSB I have learned that the exact model of the engine needs to be given for a better chance at getting the correct parts if your parts store does not use the VIN or if their system is simply full of problems, in Europe the use the Engine Code, that would have stated GDI Petrol from the beginning, there is even another system in Europe name a TECDOC Number that ties everything about a specific car together. The Engine Code here should be G4KJ while the MPI should be G4KG, most of the time this info is in WIKI.

Opened the box to find someone removed the name brand bearing and dropped in an oversized china POS part. Not even close to the right size..and lacking the word Timken...
    Second time I was a very unhappy. Set of rear struts for our SUV. Total junk and had rear end noises within a week. Rubber bushings pushed out of the assembly. (smooched out like the rubber was to soft.) Ordered in a set of Monroe's. 100% exact fit and finish. Requested a warranty return, and was denied as I didn't have the factory original boxes for the return.
    I asked the dingdong "These are supposed to be a lifetime warranty...what do you expect us to do if the struts fail after 3 years and we need a return?..." They said not to toss out the boxes, as they need the factory packing..
    I still use them, but I double check everything before starting any projects now. They really have lost a lot of credibility.

    Good outcome for your customer, while an band-aid repair, the cost of a full rebuild VS a remanufactured engine VS a wrecker engine really depends on the condition of the vehicle as a whole and how long the owner intends keeping it. I have done similar repairs on my own vehicles, as well as full head reconditioning.
    In Australia we can get second hand import engines from Japan, back in the day the Japanese used to replace engines every 20K - 40K (in kilometers, not miles). It had something to do with maintaining their strict emissions testing. I have bought and installed a few of these engines and put them in my cars with no issues. In the earlier days (mid 1980's when I was much, much younger and not so financially secure) the only thing I had to do was use the original distributor from my engine and remove some of the emission control stuff from the Japanese import engine. We had ponts still, they had electronic stuff in their distributors and we did not have as much emission control stuff as the Japanese had, and as far as the distributor goes. I have no idea what the Japanese do these days, though I know you can still buy the import engines, possibly with more kilometers these days due to the better emission control on engines.

    @Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, great work getting it fixed Ivan! I wondered just how common burnt valves are and if it's more frequent with GDI engines or only certain manufacturers etc. I know it's high mileage but my mother's 20 yr old Impala has over 240,000 miles and the engine doesn't skip a beat. I learned sometime ago that GDI engines do create issues with buildup on valves due to the fact that the fuel no longer "washes" the valves since fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber. I've also had some issues with parts from Rock Auto. It was frustrating because the exhaust component was a section of pipe containing an inline catalytic converter with a flanged ball/socket joint on the leading end that mounts to the downpipe of the header. Idk if the manufacturer could not read a tape measure but no amount of twisting the assembly would allow the joint to align and seal.
    They not only welded the parts together at the wrong angle but the inner diameter of the "socket" was smaller than the factory "ball"... So I took some measurements, used my sawzall to cut the factory steel pipe preserving the "socket" and then cut the new "socket" joint off. Then using a coupling I could twist them to align and weld them together. As for gaskets, my nephew actually ordered a set from a local parts store. He waited for them to come in, got them home & there were about 8 gaskets in the kit and 3 of them did not fit his application. For whatever reason they included in the kit, intake and other gaskets for a different engine for the same vehicle... But WHY sell something in a kit that you need but doesn't work on your engine... -_- So he had to order the intake/other gaskets separately. Ridiculous.

I guess some more corrosion resistant valve seat inserts might work, if the potential problem of the different expansion rates of 2 different metals could be dealt with. That might cause worse problems.
    Who would have thought that direct injection would have caused such carbon buildup problems. I guess they figured, 'hey, it works with diesel'.

      if you've ever seen what a diesel car's intake looks like after 100,000 miles of not working hard enough, the 2-inch intake bore may be carbon'd up to just 3/4 inch bore.
      Things have gotten a lot better since EGR taken after catalyst and DPF so no soot mixing with the oily PCV vapours

    The challenge in upper engine repair, after repairing the valve train with variable valve timing is in understanding if the system is working properly. This takes time because it is prudent, after the engine is at operating temperature, to monitor the system and see if the CAM(s) desired and actual position(s) match. It is a challenge because if there is a mismatch would you may not get a check engine light on the first test drive. If the system is considered part of generic OBD-II by the OEM, then to set the MIL it could take two drive cycles. Which is time consuming.
    The other challenge is how much of a warranty do you provide? and exactly what are you giving a warranty for? If the engine was replaced the remanufactured replacement has a warranty, so this is an easy task. But, what do you do in the case of the vehicle in the video. Here again not an easy task. I think if, after looking at real-time data, you are satisfied with the operation of the engine (new valves and injector) then I think you should drive the vehicle until the OBD-II monitors pass (especially if the vehicle must be inspected to be registered). Then, after this point, I think you can issue a warranty. But, for how long? Three months? However, as before, meeting the drive cycle requirements is time consuming.

    I had a 17 sonata with the 2.4 it was a great car since new minus the oil burning problem. It burnt one of the exhaust valves on cylinder 2 at 155k. It burnt in such a spectacular fashion it that when whatever piece broke off it played ping pong with the valve seat and destroyed the head. It was cheaper at that time to put a used motor in it being my only vehicle couldn’t afford the down time. Had the motor out and in in 6 hours.

    by the other valves burn pattern in two places across from each other, I'm going to say the valves quit rotating and are rocking instead, due to worn out guides.
    they've possibly become too tight from wear and need the buckets/shims swapped for proper lash.

    Interesting cam adjuster. Those valve seats look very worn by how wide they are. There's no need to check and adjust valve clearance since you said it's a solid bucket design? Maybe the worn seats and valves caused the lash to go to zero which caused the valves to not close all the way and burn?

    • @Eastahtata
      @Eastahtata Рік тому +1

      You have to measure the clearance and purchase the correct buckets or grind the tips of the valve down to adjust clearance. Most cylinder head shops will grind the valve stem because those buckets get really expensive at $20 each. So this head has questionable clearances unless they were actually measured.

    • @KelleyCycle
      @KelleyCycle Рік тому +1

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics This could happen when over time the valve seats wear and allow the valve to sink slightly closing up the lash and resulting in burned valves & seats. Happens a lot in smaller engines too that use the same shim under bucket design.
      The indicated lash adjustment reminds of the old Brigg and Stratton flat head design of grinding the valve tips to set the lash..lol.

    • @brainndamage
      @brainndamage Рік тому

      @@2nickles647 I doubt the valve wear has anything to do with the chain, just wear. The chain isn't actually stretched woth force, it's worn (a small amount in each chain link adds up to a lot of "stretch" in the whole chain)

    I seen so many exhaust valves burned like that.
    A piece of carbon gets on seat let's hot exhaust burn a v out of valve.
    Typical. I found synthetic oil does not make carbon or blue smoke. Very expensive but helps stop carbon build up.
    When seat is worn to wide that happens a lot . Three angle cuts reduce width of seat to spec.

    This carbon build up inside the exhaust port is of course also happening inside the intake port. May be a bit less but you can't count on that. It was better to inspect the whole head including regrinding all valves, changing the seals, and skimming the head. And incase of high oil consumption the piston rings had to be checked and changed too. Simple because the created vacuum sucks oil along side the piston and the cylinder wall into the cylinder it self.
    Question: Were puffs of oil vapor aka smoke visible when pulling off the crankcase breather hose while running the warm engine at idle?

Wanted to charge me 1200 dollars to replace an oil pan which took me and a friend on the lift in his garage an hour to do. It took longer for the gasket maker to dry than it did removing and installing it. The only TDI shop here is a couple of hours away and is always over scheduled with work months out so if any injection issues come up. I'm SOL and told you shouldn't have bought an import. I needed a car. I have very basic needs like 4cyl, manual transmission, defrost in the winter, and everything else is optional. I found this car because it was a diesel that gets 45 to 50mpg and diesel was cheap then. Now its so expensive, it's not even practical to drive a diesel car around and honda and toyota 4cyl gas gets around 37 to 40mpg anyways.

Did his own oil changes with synthetic oil, didn't beat on it, still burned an exhaust valve at about 200k. Hyundai was sending him things about guaranteeing the bottom end and all that with the Theta engine issues, that was perfect when he got rid of the car, instead it ate a valve after developing a slight oil burning issue.
