Argus by Wishbone Ash is one of the greatest albums of all time.
Unless people see the back cover of Argus they will never see the flying saucer leaving.
Anything from their album Argus is worth checking out, an absolute classic of an album. The song Phoenix is also a masterpiece.
Congratulations. You are the very first reaction guy who has noticed these guys, the best guitar band ever. They didn't use the typical lead guitar and rhythm guitar, they played a double lead. If you like melody, on "Leaf and Stream" or "Lullaby" or "Candlelight" you can hear them chasing each other up and down the scales. Or, you can fasten your seatbelt and neck brace and try "Phoenix." Or "Warrior" or "FUBB" or "Persephone". Or, if you like bass guitar, "Handy". I saw them three times. Never a big elaborate fancy stage show, just stood and delivered the songs.
I saw Wishbone Ash around 1974. Great band.
My favorite is The King Will Come, from Live Dates.
I was just listening to some Wishbone Ash today (ARGUS) and thought that maybe you should try them. Here you are! Yes, their vocals sound like Jon Anderson from YES! You need to hear Blowin Free next.
Start with "Handy" and "Phoenix" off their self titled first album. Argus is a great album as well. This album was kinda mixed, at least as far as I can remember.
This is great, but for me, Argus is the one to catch, which I'm still playing 50 years later!!!!!
And me.
Unfortunately Wishbone Ash's albums and career often were a bit uneven. This one though is a great example of their unique guitar sound!
Live, they were killer!
They're still playing. They will be at Ludlow Garage in Cincinatti on March 1st 2023. Saw them last March, and they still sound great. Most of original members still intact. Only one two American venues in 2023.
Stick with it, stick with it folks. Damn, it gets good. Proggy, YES-like good. Those underlying basslines...
You are getting quite an education! Great stuff.
Hi , I love Wishbone Ash. Their albums are so varied from sounding like a jamming session to beautifully structured melodies & songwriting...Some excellent instrumentals too. The 1st song I ever heard was called "Everybody Needs a Friend" from "Wishbone Four", and the guitar solos on that is simply sublime and wonderful, & such a beautiful song. I could list so many tracks but I see plenty in the comments, so a list will simply be lost..so..Just 2 of my all time favourite tracks from the album "There's The Rub", that I have been addicted to playing for decades !! >>> "Lady Jay" .. & " Persephone" ... Play loud ! Incredible melodic rock !
For more mainstream Wishbone Ash (with lyrics and not in 7/4 time) try "Blowin' Free" or "Blind Eye".
Blowing Free. Yeah.
May I say that drumming is awesome! I love how the opening transitions into a wilder wonderful ride. Very cool.
Big fan. of Wishbone,. Their best albums, IMHO. are Wishbone Ash (their first). Arggus ( their third), and Wishbone Four.
Early Wishbone Ash is so great. Very English, melodic sound.

I saw Wishbone Ash in '74. (Joe Walsh opened for them!) They were amazing. I was even thinking of sending you a copy of the album "Argus" which I think you'd love. Not every WA track is as good as the others, but they were a very solid band. "Phoenix" is the number that put them on the map, btw.
I saw them as well with Joe Welsh as an opener at Sheep Meadow Central Park NYC, awesome! Martin Turner the creative genius.
Thanks for reminding me how good the drumming is in this and also how good Steve Upton was in general. They really were a band of excellent musicians - Drums, Bass and twin leads, all superb. There is very little info on the net about Steve Upton, he retired some time ago
Saw Wishbone Ash live 2 nights ago on board "Cruise to the Edge"!
sounds like wishbone ash answer to the band yes! awesome touche.
Superb track. That drumming ! Great selection and reaction
Andy Powell is a genius.
The time signature is 7/4.
my 2 favs will always be Blowin' Free & Rock n Roll Widow!!
Pilgrim is the ultimate instrumental ever created. It should be commended for the highest award for musical genius. Jazz fused with rock.
Thanks for doing this and spreading the word about one of the most underrated bands in history. The Pilgrim is my favorite. Listen to the song F.U.B.B.
This is and always will be my most favorite WA album . Its simply Amazing . Love the build and then the explosion of this piece . Something that was their trademark . Orgasmic
Blowin Free and The King Will Come...please!!
The bass solo in Handy, the first album, is mind blowing. Like it's telling a story in its own musical language. Don't know how else to describe it.
Handy I agree is the greatest bass solo I have ever heard. Total mastery of the instrument and a work of great beauty. Top man!
Ah Daniel you are killing it with these bands other reactors don't touch, like Van der Graaf Generator, but I do love Wishbone Ash. Maybe look at listening to some Can such as Vitamin c or Mother Sky next or even some Camel or Gentle Giant.
A great overlooked band that I only discovered a few years ago. Having dueling guitarists is a blast.
Um, your chair squeaks.
Totally sublime. This song invents its own rules and is breathtakingly daring and unique, no formula here. The harmonies of guitars and bass are out of this world, each musician tossing the lead and direction to each other to build up the tension, occasionally dipping into menacing and powerful almost discordant notes. Finally there is the triumphant resolution breaking the tension into an amazing finale. The whole piece is founded on solid and inventive drumming, driving forward like a steam train but also in full control to introduce halts and pauses to change direction. A masterpiece.
By far the greatest Wishbone Ash song is “Phoenix” on their debut album. Your ears will thank you if you give it a listen.
Your analysis reminded me of a song. One that starts "He was but a traveler on the lonely road of life...". It's a Chris de Burgh one titled "Just Another Poor Boy".
Never acquainted myself with them back in the day, my loss. Been wondering for years what the instrumental I heard a WB alumnus play on a seeming jam session, iirc, late night TV, sometime in the intervening years, maybe late 70s, maybe 80s. Still no closer to knowing, that was much more romantic-sounding, I guess, but this was awesome! Thanks, D.
I saw them with...... Wait for it............ The average white band ! I think they're still picking up the pieces!! Try the double live album"Live Dates ! I've been a fan for over 50yrs and it still makes my eyes well-up!!!! ROCK-ON
Glad you called out Steve Upton's amazing drumming. Absolutely loved this album. Was very far out at the time. Martin turner's scat singing was crazy good. Every song is a jewel.
I saw them open for The Who in 1971 at the Mississippi River Festival at the SIU Edwardsville, Illinois campus. For the $2.00 price for a lawn seat. Jim
First time I heard Wishbone Ash was in 1971, they were opening for The Who.
Checkout sometime world off their argus album
Oh, wow, haven't heard this in decades and damn they were good! Sounds like 7/4 re time signatures. Lovely reaction!
Argus, my friend, Argus.
Peace on earth.
My reaction when l first heard this track in 1971 as a 16 year old your face says it all, also first band l ever saw, 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Not the best song to start with Wishbone Ash, IMHO.
Like many have said before me , you gotta listen to the Argus album !
Both Yes and Emerson Lake And Palmer had out of this world pianists though .
Great band, their
first song I ever heard was jail bait, that turned me on to them.
So, I wonder how much influence WA had on Rush, as there's some definite grooves in the basslines that are quite obviously reflected in some of Rush's seminal works.
Lately, it's seemed like you're working your way through the soundtrack of my childhood. 😸
Error of my way - Wishbone Ash
This reviewer knows his music. 😊
this song is a stone cold classic tho !
Early Chicago is very "proggie"
Does this remind anyone else a bit of Billy Cobham’s Spectrum? Sure sounds like. Cobham’s drumming!
Yes?
Yes!!!
Also King Crimson, Moody Blues, ELP...
Wisbone Ash and Camel opened for Kiss.
Hotter than Hell tour
For some bizarre reason and totally unrelated, Tobacco Road popped up in my head.
Possibly a throwback to a big reel machine "playlist"...
Great song for a novice WA listener. My favorites are Throw down the Sword and Handy. Fantastic!
I've never heard this before. I think I've only heard 1 or 2 songs by Wishbone Ash. Yeah, I agree with you that it sounded a little like YES. Great stuff.
Speaking of YES : ) it was great to see you finally react to YES again (Sweetness), let alone that you listened to something from their first album, with Peter Banks on guitar and Tony Kaye on keyboards. Every song on their first 2 albums is under 7 minutes long, which wouldn't be typical of YES after that, as you well know, but I want to encourage you to check out 3 more songs from that first album. It's their 3 best from that album, as far as I'm concerned.
'Yesterday and Today', 'Survival' and 'Every Little Thing'.
'Yesterday and Today' is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's right up there with 'Wonderous Stories', which I don't think you've heard yet either.
'Survival' is generally considered their best off the album, but my favorite is their Beatles cover of 'Every Little Thing'. I think it's better than the original, and I love the Beatles.
I remember having the same reaction to the drummer when I first heard this song.
Interesting you mention Yes ! they and ELP are also two of my favs
