I had never heard this song before and ran into your video because I was looking for a review on this type of Guild. I absolutely loved it and am conviced I need to buy one now 😊! This is absolutely amazing and would like to play this piece one day.
Hi Leslie, the Guild D120 is an amazing guitar for it's price. I always play several copies to pick out the best one :) But in general the most copies of the D120 which I had in my hands sounds amazing so you can't go wrong with this model.
@@jerrykooyman Guilds are absolutely the most beautifully sounding guitars I have ever played. Epiphone is what I started out with (1960's) and had one for 42 years, I really like Ovations, not too big on Taylors, though they sound ok, Martins? Nope. Takamine? No. Fender? Faggetaboudit! When I played the first Guild years ago at a pawn shop, I decided I needed to get one one of these days (that one was too expensive for me). When I was at a music shop, this guitar was on the rack so I picked it up and played it for awhile. When I looked at the price tag, I 'bout wet my britches because the price was so low. I thought they made a mistake and I asked if the guitar was used - no. I asked what the price was. The owner looked at the tag on it and told me that was the price. I asked again because I didn't think I heard him right. He told me again. I said, "I'll take it!" (I wasn't going to ask a third time because I knew he had made a mistake and I didn't want him jacking up the price). So I have this guitar and it is a most wonderful sounding guitar and I love the heck out of it!
@@ysgeye I also have to tell you that one of the main reasons I like this Guild D120 is because it has a 45mm nut width, which is perfect for fingerstyle guitar players. That piece which I'm playing in this video is not possible for me to play with a 43mm nut width. This Guild is from the Westerly Collection which they made in China. Guild started a new line which is produces in another Chinese factory. They make a very big mistake now: all the new models have 43mm nut width. I wrote an email to Guild that this is big mistake and they should give the customers the option to choose between a 43 or 45mm nut width. I asked Guild if they want to bring me in contact with the builders. But it seems that the people of Guild are very arrogant and their answer was: "We can not give contact details of the builders. we will forward you suggestion and when they are interesting they will contact you." Anyway... if you have very small fingers you could go with the most Guild guitars, but when your fingers are bigger you should go for one of the Chinese Westerly Collection models like the D-120, D-140, D-150 etc.
I have martin 000rs1 and I think I will sell it to buy this guild goddess. It's much more ballanced than 000rs1. I played it today in a music shop, really fell in love. Love is a beautiful thing:)
Thanks so much! To give a an update... I don't have this D120 anymore, I have a D140 now. The D120 has a nice sound but the projection in the high tone were too soft, so I had to push up the highs with the EQ in the mix. The D140 has a much better projection in the highs cause of the spruce top.
@@jerrykooymanI'm just watching this again and thinking how exquisite it truly is, such a beautiful and haunting piece of music, I just ended my guitar search, stumbled upon an Eastman E6SS-TC (All solid torrefied spruce/flame Mahogany) slope shoulder dread (J35 inspired) in a shop in Sydney and simply could not put it down, best playing and sounding guitar I've found, had to buy it, the quality is impeccable.
Hi -what great guitar playing . You are very talented . I have seen that you have sold the Guild D120 but which strings did you use on it as I also have a D120
Hi Jerry, You dis an amazing job on Screaming Pines.. I must admit this video influenced me to buy one and I am now the proud owner of a D120. In particular the open low D String you play here sounds incredible.. Just wondering what string were you using on your D120 when you recorded this? Thanks, Wez
Thanks so much for the comment. I would recommend a D140 over the D120. I don't have this D120 anymore and have a D140 now. The D120 has a nice sound but the projection in the high tone were too soft, so I had to push up the highs with the EQ in the mix. The D140 has a much better projection in the highs cause of the spruce top. I think my D120 was build too stiff. That's the problem with the Chinese Guilds, there is no consistency in the final quality. I think the USA Guild has a better consistency in building... they do mostly finetuning of the bracings which they don't do with the Chinese Guilds.
I’m in love. This guitar and your playing-what a combination! This guitar sounds gorgeous or you are making this so gorgeous. Absolutely spectacular! What are thoughts between this guitar and Guild DS-240 Memoir?
Hi David, thanks do much for your comment. About your question between the Guild D120 and DS-240... I can't answer ;) The reason is this: every copy of the D-120 sounds different, also with the DS-240. Some of them like the one I played here is terrific, and some others I played in a store not. The same goes for the other models, even for very expensive Taylors. A friend of mine wanted also to buy a D-120, so we went to the store and I brought my D-120 to compare. One copy of the D-120 in the store sounded flat and a bit dead and another copy sounded open and rich. So you must always compare with the guitar that you already have, that's the only advice I can gave you. About a year ago I switched from my D-120 to an Eastman AC220 which sounded even more open than my D-120, but the sustain was not always tight as my D-120. Since last summer I switched to a Guild D-140 and sold the Eastman. The Guild D-140 has a better projection in the high range which I really need when I play unplugged at a gig. In general a guitar with a mahogany top sounds a bit warmer/darker than a spruce top, but also this can be very different with every brand and model. In this recording with the D-120 I had to push up the 4 kHz range to make it more brighter in the recording, cause the projection of the high strings are a bit softer compare with the basses. Any way... I'm still looking for the Holy Grail ;)
Fantastic playing and great sounding guitar I think your fingers had a lot to do with that though.I was looking at this guitar I’m a sucker for mahogany topped guitars would you recommend it? Was you in an alternate tuning there or standard ? You had an amazing sound going keep up the good work👍
Thanks for your comment! Well I had to do a lot of EQ to get more highs out of it. The D-120 has a very smooth sound, when I strum a G chord for example it sounds like if there is bit a chorus on it, really nice. But to be honest the projection of the trebles were too soft for my taste. It can be different with every copy of this model. Now I have a Guild D-140 with a spruce top which is more my preference now because it has more volume in the trebles. The tuning of this piece is a Drop D tuning (only the low E string to a D).
You make this guitar sing like a flock of birds. Full and charming sound, brilliant playing. Congrats!

This is very very good and I'm really loving Guild acoustic guitars at the moment, just missed out on a mint used D140 burst recently, I'm gutted.
