Volkswagen came onto the hot hatch scene a bit sooner than Honda but as the performance needle continues to move further up the ladder it has forced both companies to offer the most potent version of each economy hatchback. Here in America, we've had the #GolfR for nearly a decade while Honda dragged their feet until 2017 when the hottest Civic came to market in the form of the #CivicTypeR. Both #HotHatch offer 2.0L #Turbocharged engines with a standard 6-speed manual transmission. The #Volkswagen offers #4Motion AWD while the #Honda is only FWD. While the #TypeR looks a bit too over the top, some would criticize the #VWGolfR for looking too plain. Today, we find out which one is actually the best.
Sorry for the late post guys! We're here in Nashville with Audi to film the all-new 2019 Q3 tomorrow. Expect a full review on that car to post very soon. Just some quick house keeping, this comparison is actually the last video to have the dreaded mic problem that we experienced in the Audi A8 and Nissan Murano videos. You'll notice a voiceover in the exterior front scene and a little bit of static in some other walk around scenes. Sorry about that, but our editor seemed to have made it work with some tweaks. Really interesting to see such a different interpretation of a hot hatch from each brand so please let us know below which one you would rather buy!
Redline Reviews you see the new Q3 sport back and do you think it looks better than the X2?

Go away douchebag.
Great review as always. I’m searching for a manual transmission car that’s easy to drive and has short clutch travel, any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thx.

After reading the latest Motortrend.com article comparing the Civic Si and their longterm Civic Type R, the Si sounds exactly what you need. Light, and early to engage clutch and excellent shift linkage.
Type R for kids; Golf R for adults
"So having just stepped out of the Golf R" (Shirt is completely different lol)
🤣

I have a GTI, and I get in with pants on and leave with shorts on. German engineering.
The Golf R is the new phone booth apparently.
Lol always finding funny comments. 😂
I am 42, bought a Championship White 2018. I was on the fence about the 3 main cars, The veloster N , golf r and the type r. I went with the Type R as i got it at a reduced price. I live in a small town in eastern Canada and it was a left over from the year before. I dont regret it!! Its my last kick at the can with this kind of car. I just wasnt ready for an Accord like car yet. Hopefully in 5 years or so the Accord will appeal to me more. I wanted this car back in my late twenties and when i heard it was coming here i just had to have it, almost a bucket list kind of thing. With that being said, All the cars are awesome . Great time to be a car lover. Cheers all!!!
That Civic is huge on the inside, even compared to the previous gen Accord. No need to step up to a mid-size car nowadays unless your kids are all over 6'.
I would love to see a comparison between the little siblings of these two vehicles, a GTI vs Si review. I don't think I have seen one yet.
Unfortunately the GTI is like half a tier above the Si, both in terms of price and performance
@@TheQiaoli the Si handles better with slightly sharper driving dynamics. GTI has it in straight line performance though.
3 Pedals More like the Civic Si vs Jetta GLI
Ive driven both... GTI performs way better
@@thegoodguysteve Ive driven both as well and I disagree. The GTI wasnt as engaging but was more comfortable. Si is the better drivers car, GTI is the better GT car.
I know that people blah blah about the Civic's styling (not undeserved), but when I was testing the Type R for a week I got more compliments and questions about it than I expected. People were psyched to see it, as though I were driving a far more expensive car. At the end of the day, the Type R is more fun, less mature, and feels more special when you're driving it. I badly want one. 😂
I personally would get the Type-R. Not that there's anything wrong with the Golf R. I just prefer the in your face design!
I told my wife. Heys thats the competitor for the type R. She said where? I said that one. She said where? I told her see the R in the back? That one. Shes said it looks like a basemodel car 😅😳🙊
I believe the golf r in this video is a Spektrum Edition color! I have a spektrum R myself, mine is 91 blue!
Actually Golf R is a brilliant sleeper to me
For the general public, maybe. But cops know. They're always on the lookout for tuned GTI's...!
Love the Golf R
Honda should have offered an si version of the hatch. I know people would flock to that more but an si hatch is always a good middle.
Bao Nguyen would have been sick
Money wise, they wont do it. Less people will buy the Type R. They have probably did the math already.
@@danjustynchiong I agree. This was the exact thought I had when there was no mention of an si hatch.
Even though it won’t be exactly the same thing, you could always get the sport hatch and then a ktuner or hondata system to tune it to the same specs as the si since it’s the same engine.
@@caglioso good point!
With these two, buyers already know which one they want. One of the longest running rivalries.
Good call. For the enthusiast there isn’t much debating. They’re either VW or Honda brand loyal.
I'm a loyal VW fans, I have two VW cars, one of them is the Golf R
I don't know which one, there is parts I like about both. Wish we could mix the aggression of the Type R with the AWD and tech of the Golf R. I'm a tech lover but I also like having a nice big wing 🤷♂️
I think they both have strengths and weaknesses. Some of the tech in the VW is great, but I love Honda's, and I love the look of the Civic Type R.
My oldest son works at a major Honda dealership as a technician in Atlanta but picks Golf in a heart beat!!
I personally would go with the CTR because I like how the design is “wild” how a hot hatch should look-nothing wrong with Golf R, just look a little boring, but I’m sure it drives well.
I see those lowered Golf Rs and geez, they look amazing! ......type R owner
Would love to get a used type r one day, with reasonable miles.
Will not submit to the stealerships these days.
depends on where you live; there were two at the dealership near me ($36k and $40k).
Currently have a golf R and am considering a type R. I was blown away by how much larger the type R is. Like so much larger it’s almost a deal breaker.
I own both, 2019 Civic Type R and 2018 Golf R DSG. Love both.
Interesting to see someone who owns both, how would you describe each in summary?
Liar
Orlando Lindsay wow you seem jealous.
@@FirstLast-mb9fq I agree. For that much money you can buy a way better cars. I own a 2018 Golf R, but at 80 to 90 thousand for both. I call bullshit.
@@Inspector7I Perhaps he drives one and the other is for a family member? So one 80-90K car is not a viable option, I own more than one car for the very same reason, although I am not quite so generous. But if it is for a spouse....
I owned a tuned golf r and now a type r. I prefer the type r because how it feels to drive. it just feels special . the golf r is a great car. it just didn't excite me in the same way.
Probably the hype that you're feeling. Like when you drive a Ferrari 488 and then drive a GT-R. The GT-R is dope but everyone knows that the Ferrari turns more heads, and gets more attention. In turn, make you feel more special. The Type R turns heads.
My_Supercar_Life GTR turns heads too. I’m not gonna lie though the type R makes me break my neck lol
No it’s a way better drivers car. Golf r understeers in corners. Look at how much faster a type r is on a track
My_Supercar_Life I remember a 428i Gran Coupe was turning heads and that car was nothing special. Normal people won’t know anyways, I’m trying to impress myself.
Both are nice but I value long term reliability above all so I'd pick the Honda CTR every time.
Levi the VW’s 2.0 liter is more reliable than Honda’s earth dreams engines
Der Schwindel the ea888 is really good though
Golf R for me If I were to get one. It’s more practical to me. And I prefer the understated look.
From what I've seen Golf R's are getting 0-60 in 4.8seconds with manual and around 4.5seconds with the dsg.
Hahahahahaha. No, it doesn't.
@@dieOsamas the mk8 DSG gets there in as fast as 3.9 while the manual gets there in 4.9, so he’s pretty close
Everyday practical fast car vs more track orientent and less comfy to drive everyday. I personally drove both of these cars and the Golf R is just better for everyday use. But that Type R was a blast to also whip around.
I've had a black 2017 type R for 9 months now and put 30k miles on it already. Daily driven even through harsh Michigan winters, amazing car!
The golf R brakes are NOT 4 piston calipers. They are single piston floating.
Side by side you can see one is grown up while the other is well not so grown up 🙂 I’ll take the Golf and I actually already have 2018 6 speed.
I was strongly considering the Type R. As much as I love it, I just couldn't imagine driving up to one of my clients in it. So, sadly, I didn't go with it. But I think it looks great from several angles -- it is the rear end that kills it for me. The Golf on the other hand, in an understated color could work out fine for even business meetings. But what a time to be alive to have such great options!
The FL5 corrects everything.
You skipped the fact that the Type-R had an aftermarket IC installed.
Looking forward to your reviews of the next generation of WRX/STI, Golf R, Elantra/Kona N & Civic Type R. Future is looking good for choices in the hot hatch segment
Cross shopped these, and picked up a 19 Golf R. AWD the sheer refinement of the car really sold it for me. Keep in mind a quick flash of the ECU and the Golf R can make 350hp, and that can be done at home, whereas right now to Hondata tune the CTR, you have to ship out your ECU, then at the end of the day, you're pushing 350+hp through front wheels only. Boooooo
Golf R can make easier more useable power, and be super refined, more comfortable and more premium feeling while doing it.
Chase Pennel how do you quick flash it bro?
9:21 no heated seats because they were trying to save weight
As a mk7 GTI owner, id be happy with either of these cars.
Golf R is the more well rounded vehicle considering the interior and AWD, while the type R is the winner in the track driving and pure fun department. Even as a Golf R owner I still wouldn't say one is better than the other, it is completely dependent on what you're looking for in your hatchback. Anyone arguing which one is better as if it is some kind of absolute truth is completely missing the point of this comparison.
I got the 2020 type r last week.. but my friends golf R sounds so good
Was fortunate enough to have driven both and it’s really not a contest in terms of performance, the type R is an absolute animal and the most fun you can have in a front wheel drive car. Driving the golf felt tame in comparison. Still a good choice, especially if you want a more low key commuter.
I have a Golf R 2016. The hp is 296. Mine also as the DSG transmission. I have SMOKED Type R's every single time and now I have just upgraded to a stage 1 ECU tune, CAI, and turbo inlet upgrade. Im pushing about 375 hp now. I used to be an Acura/Honda guy, then I turned to the dark side. hahaha
Damian Webber obviously with a dsg it’ll get smoked but manual vs manual type r takes it
Good for you I'm half way on the dark side. I have a Honda odyssey. If you want to make your golf R look more aggressive just add plastic like an aftermarket wing! Lol
I'd take the VW...and yeah, I'm bias; my daily driver is a 2014 Golf GTI. 😁
Much respect to the Honda (and their fans) for it's performance, but the styling is just to over the top. If I was 19, I'd love it...but at 45, the subdued VW styling is way more appealing to me. ✌
But I see mostly middle age and older guys with the civics
Both cars are totally awesome!!!
I'm a fan of both brands. I've owned a couple of Honda's including a '94 Prelude that was among the best cars I've ever owned. Put well over 100K miles on it and it drove the day I sold sold it identically to the day I bought it. Its VTEC engine was a wonder. On the other hand I've owned VW's going back to my high school days when "dinosaur crossing" signs dotted the highways. Along with an early Rabbit and a couple of GTI's including one sitting in my garage today that have given me perfect service including about 40K miles in my MK6 version with a Stage I APR tune. (Other than losing a couple of MPG's it lacked even a single issue.) Otherwise, my track days have always been on two wheels rather than four so my assessment is in terms looks, versatility, and performance both as a daily driver and as a Sunday morning canyon carver on largely deserted mountain roads.
Like many drivers whose 12th birthday was long in the past, I find the exterior styling of the Type R to be hideous. I value usable performance but I don't have to impress my classmates sitting in a high school parking lot or cruising the local drive-in. The humungous wing designed to provide down force on the rear wheels in a FWD automobile is simply ridiculous. The huge faux "vents" only adds to the styling that looks more like elements of a Halloween costume than a functional design.
Some find the styling of the R to be "boring." I find it to be simple, classic and highly functional. Visibility is unsurpassed and the attention it doesn't draw is a major plus when I'm exceeding the speed limit. Then there are minor issues that make a big difference for me. Among them is the fact that the center mounted triple exhaust in the Type R makes it difficult if not impossible to fit a hitch mounted bike rack to the Type R. My GTI (and the Golf R) with dual exhausts on the corners handles one easily.
As far as the interior is concerned, as Sofyan notes, the Golf R is significantly better. Not as flashy as the Type R's multicolored circus themed interior but overall far more "premium." And again, there are small issues that make a big difference for me personally. My big dog's second home is the back seat of my GTI. I simply wouldn't purchase a vehicle that makes no provision for back seat HVAC vents. My dog would suffer silently but my teenage daughter would complain loudly. And as far as versatility is concerned my GTI (and the Golf R) easily accommodates my spouse, my daughter and two of her friends (or a friend and the dog.) The Type R is a four passenger vehicle, period. And even though it's a foot longer than the Golf R, it provides less overall cargo capacity.
For many years I always had at least one manual transmission vehicle in my garage. Until I purchased a GTI with its DSG automated manual in 2013. For a car I use as a daily driver, I'd never go back. It's quicker shifting than any MT and when driven in manual mode provides every bit as much control and "engagement" as a traditional manual transmission. Another point for the Golf R in terms of versatility.
The Civic Type R is an undeniably impressive vehicle. For those looking for a track toy they can drive on the street or a hatchback with stoplight drag racing cred it's difficult to beat. But it reminds me of a comment a friend once made about his Ferrari. He said, "I bought it to impress women but I found it drew stares and comments mainly from 12 year old boys."
Hold the traction control button down on the typeR until it pops up that it is fully off. Then launch. You won’t get any wheel hop.
It still gets wheel hop..
If it was my money, I'll definitely choose the Honda Type R. It's definitely reliable, sporty, fast, and Scotty approves it!!!!
Definitely the civic I just bought a 2019 sport hatchback would have bought a Type R if there was one with in 500 miles of where I live but that's ok I'm gonna make it my baby Type R with some mods
I would get the VW for the styling and the automatic. I'm surprised Honda hasn't rolled out an auto for at least the Si. Gti sales went up 40% when they released the dual-clutch.
Jay G dude I wish! I ditched my old Si because I couldn’t do the manual anymore but would get an auto version Si in a heartbeat.
Type r sales is not an issue. They are selling type r at a premium and its still selling! Maybe if they make the civic si auto.
I have a 2017 Acura ILX. Based on a 9th gen Civic Si with an 8 speed Dual Clutch with a torque converter. I love it, i would recommend it.
logan c good point, the current ILX is on the last gen civic platform which uses last gen Si’s high revving n/a 4 cyl. I tested one but oddly found I was too tall to get comfortable in the drivers seat. I’m not that tall (just under 6ft) so I was surprised but thems the breaks sometimes.
People are irritating. They all cry out how all new cars look the same & they're boring & yet when someone goes against the grain & makes something that looks unique, it's always "Oh My GoD iTs ThE uGlIeSt ThInG iVe EvEr SeEn" 🙄🙄
Vin Diesel's Husband Honda can't win. The old Civics were "too boring looking", so Honda stepped it up and designed a car that dares to stand out in a parking lot and now they are too "gaudy". Smh.
@@NaijaBull I mean you can't argue that it isn't terribly over designed. In my opinion it's so ugly I'm actually interested in it. Its also doesn't help that it has fake vents the size of Russia. They could have done much better if the designer just knew he was allowed to put the pencil down.
So true. Car companies can't win
It wasn’t about ugly it’s about immaturity The Type R was screaming immature and boy racer
Both are beautiful. But if I were looking for a long term investment...I would go with the VW Golf R. Thanks for the excellent reviews and correct information on vehicles. If I'm being honest, Redline is the best car review channel on UA-cam.
Type R retains it's value better and is more reliable.
I really like how the Golf R is understated
It's for people who don't want to look like their trying to be in the fast and furious.
In conclusion, both are great hot hatches, one a Sleeper, the other a Ricer
Just pick my 2019 CTR and honestly my 2018 GTI with stage 2( aka a DP and UNITRONIC TUNE done from my laptop) feel faster than the civic but the Type R will eat it alive on anything over 90mph,the GTI just run out of power at 100 and the Type R top speed go all the way to 169 and trust me,it will easily climb up there, top end power is incredible, you need to drive one and every reviewer keep on saying it over and over.
Honda Type-R for me aggressive styling, racing interior looks slick with great seats, very practical and good reliability.
Will be looking forward to next year to get a 2018 Type-R as it comes with the extra Honda sensing features as standard.
Being a vw-audi tech, apr dealer, and performance junkie. Golf R all day for me. Stage 2 tune with dsg tune and apr lowering springs. You will blow the doors off the type R on the track, in the rain, and the snow. I own a 15 Audi S3 which is close to a golf R besides body and mag ride. Stage 2 tune with dsg tune and car runs 11s on the quarter and 0-60 in just a little over 3 seconds. No brainer if your into mods. Goodluck getting a good tune for the type R.
The MY19 Honda Type R does have Honda sensing mate. Things like lane assist, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and so on.
in certain countries...
Low and wide. In person, the Type R almost has a super car presence. The performance speaks for itself. After owning 911's, '88 M-5, 535I, S6 Avants, the Type R was an easy decision based on performance, and feel. And, I don't mind the attention it draws. I feel like I'm 55 again! I passed on the '20, and bought a '19, as the Sensing omits rear cross traffic, and blind spot alerts on the Civics.
I'll take the Golf R because I live in the "Snow Belt" south of Buffalo, NY and I need the all wheel drive. I will not buy that color though! :)
you should know that the golf r, like many other awd cars these days, has no symmetrical awd. it has an on demand system, that only sends power to the rear, when it detects traction loss at the front.
I love how professional you can be while still throwing words like “shafted” in there. Keep it up!
I like it in black it looks like what it is but you're right the civic doesn't feel like a subcompact anymore...
Love the engine in the type r. I drive an accord 2.0t and it is amazing
I agree. I have a 2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0T. Great car and engine is so effortless.
Me too, great car.
Yea that engine is a savage. Can only imagine what kind of power ppl are modding it up to.
Siavash Erfanfar it’s shockingly quick. Motor is a masterpiece.
Honda accord 2.0t are disappointing. Lousy manual shifter, no LSD. The GLI out performs in in every way.
Get your sit right about the engine scoops: it provides “general engine bay cooling” and contributes to the Type R’s stability by sending air into, through and under the car. + honda offers various interior light kits!
Excellent review my friend.
One question for you if’s posible.
If you need to consider buy one of this car a new type R or golf R mk7.5-8 ? What is best long term car? Consider carbon accumulation, electrical issues, quality materials.
Thanks in advance
I wouldn't touch the civic with a 10 ft pole. The oil dilution issue is a big problem. Honda says its a rare occurrence that only happens in cold weather and short trips but they are lying. I also read of other Honda's with transmission problems and air conditioning units failing.
....How does this apply to a Type R? the oil dilution is on the L15B7....This is a K20C1. They have literally nothing in common with one another.
Golf R, no question, just ordered one. The type R would've appealed in my early 20's but now I think it looks a bit ridiculous
Regarding the exhaust noise of the Civic. The engine noise has always been what makes me love hondas. All the way back to the 99 Si i used to own. Honda has never focused on exhaust note. I doubt they ever will
As much as I love the sportiness of the Type R, I’d probably take the Golf R for it’s daily driver qualities, plus it’s just a better match for my personality.
I'll easily take the Golf R over the other one for several reasons. The vdub has much better quality outside and the interior is leaps above the honda. The vdub is AWD. You can get the 7 spd DSG in the vdub, which shifts faster than you ever could in the manual honda. And finally tunability is way ahead of the honda also. with ONLY a stg 1 APR tune, on 93 octane youll get around 370hp 383 tq (no hardware changes). And if you want more, go stg 2 tune with supporting mods of downpipe, intake, and intercooler and youre looking at around 387 hp 409 tq. And if you have the money, might as well tune your DSG, AND then get a Haldex (awd system) tune. Point is, you can do so much more with the vdub.
If it was not for the Fast and the Furious and Need for Speed, not sure I would be so stoked to watch this comparison. Love that we have these cars available to us.
Both are great cars. It’s a matter of taste
For 40k I want a car that stands out n turns heads. Give me the type r all day
Went for the s3 myself. I know it’s not a hatch but was just more practical for the Canadian winters.
Zain B How so? The S3 is the sedan cousin of the Golf R. They both use the Haldex AWD system.
I switched from Gold R manual to S3 and I regretted it. So much less fun and understeered more IMO.
I can remember back the early 00s buzzing around in my B swapped EF thinking about how badass a 2.0 Turbo from Honda would be. I like the styling - the red trim. i think as time goes on people will end up making it a really good looking car. Nice catch on the wheel offset, id not caught that. My girl is a VW fangirl but i just cant, the reliability is insulting. But imagine the civic with the Golf Gauge cluster and infotainment screen. The germans know how to do interior.
Honda does not offer sunroof on type R models because that adds weight and is less structural rigidity. I’m surprised it even came with AC and radio which it normally would be an option you would have to add
The VW has a huge depreciation after purchase , Honda is the best selling used brand name and retains it's value, ask a VW technician about water leaks, even without a sunroof
Fresh Fuschia Mettalic is the color. My 17 Beetle was that color. It really pops. VW for me even though the Honda design is fresh.
I love Honda, but the new type R is not the best looking(imo). My money is on the golfR.
I'm trading my 2003 Odyssey on a 2019 CTR this week. The CTR feels pretty small to me. I like the mini van reference though, because I love mini vans (and wagons).
3 inches wider. IT'S A VAN! Like the deep exhaust note of the Civic.
Good choice of music for your establishing shots.
Don't you like his dance tracks for video intros? You know here's a Lexus and here's some loud hip hop dance music to go with it.
Not sure why people equate bland/subdued styling with "grown up". The Golf R is a nice car but I think they can do more to make it stand apart from a regular GTI. A bmw M3 is miles apart from a regular 3 series. The focus rs stands apart from an st or regular focus without being too wild. The same could've been done with the Golf R. If a civic type r is boy racerish, then why not say the same about a porsche gt3 with that huge wing?
If I was in my 20s, I'd have the Civic, but being married and in my 40s, the Golf is much more in keeping with having a family and having your wife being able to drive it. I'd love both ideally!
Honda Civic Type R for me, especially after #Dieselgate. I won't even look at VW company vehicles anymore, which is probably a good thing since VW reliability ratings are so horrendous anyway.
For the love of everything holy please figure out these microphone issues! This is something that has been going on for YEARS and I don't want something like this to hold you back on very important videos! I love this channel and want to see it grow.
Dwilsonmusic145 Stfu he knows it's an issue and has obviously fixed it
Let him figure it out, not a huge deal. Get over it. This is free entertainment and he will grow regardless.
Had a GTI and now have an Accord 2.0t. The Civic is off my list for the styling, especially the wing. If you can get a wing delete...maybe? But the AWD is a big advantage for the Golf, living in New England. Let’s see what the next gen Golf R is like with the dual clutch.
Not really an advantage when you're not selling and a fwd is faster lol. Current golf r and ones before has dual clutch already. Nothing to look forward to really.
If the civic had been RWD I'd probably have bought one despite its juvenile styling I'd of still fancied one. But ultimately manual box and FWD killed it for me. Picking up a new DSG golf soon. Auto boxes are just so damn good I couldn't go back. My first 6 cars were manual, last 3 were RWD and last one was RWD with 8spd auto box and it was just sublime. This time I'm going for awd DSG. Gonna be amazing. Honda needs to up their game. Manual FWD is for $10k shopping cars not performance cars!!
Robert Thomson golf r is fwd 90% of the time it’s not a full time awd system
@@f181234 well it is AWD. But it's not 4WD I know. Its a haldex system using electrohydraulic clutch packs 50% of the torque can go to the rear on dry roads. If the front wheels were on ice or snow for example then up to 100% of the torque goes to the rear. Its a very dynamic and fast acting system. The car doesn't handle like FWD at all. Its not a reactive system on the golf r. Its proactive meaning it uses all 4 wheels In advance of when it predicts it will need it. Brilliant to drive. I just got mine at the weekend.
Do your research on the type r’s design before you crib.
What are you looking for a performance car or not. There is info available for the design of the Honda.
I do honestly think that people know very little, and I appreciate people’s perspectives but the Type R is purpose built for racing.
I will help explain some of the features of the type r design.
Fender and skirts to channel air splitters for downforce with a brake cooling area built into the front splitter. Vortex generators to channel air to the spoiler, a fully flat underside for air to pass smoothly and quickly, part of the Venturi effect.
The middle exhaust tip sucks air into the engine and cancels out drone on a long drive. The bonnet actually sends air around the car. I could go on but the design is special, in my opinion.
Unfortunately it’s a case of functionality over being pretty. But you can’t have everything as they say.
In all honesty we see this kind of design in formula and exotic cars, but when this gets applied to a “Civic” people soon crib. I often think would people crib it as much if it was branded differently hmm.
The golf is a fantastic car, love it is brilliant BUT for the enthusiast I believe the Honda engineers have designed and built a special car here.
Thanks for reading 👍 just my thoughts
Good show mate!!!! Both cars are very nice, But i'll have the Golf R as it's more of an all rounder, its Lovely inside and out!!!! The Civic Type R's to Full on for me!!!! (Race Car)
When I realized I could
Get a C5 corvette for 42 k (2016-17) with low miles (7-20 K) that pushes 450 HP. and is VERY EASY and relatively cheap to mod and bring to 600 HP. I was immediately turned off from the hot hatch concept for my next car. Both cars are super cool. But I meed more power and better handling to itch my scratch.
Bacon Grease Your comparing apples and oranges these are cars you can drive year round everyday a corvette is more of weekend car or summer car
Yeah oc. Hothatch is called hothatch for a reason. Practicality and sportiness. Basically middle ground of both which corvette doesnt have
Word!!!👍🏿
That's an expensive c5 Corvette
C5 or C7?
You have the 0-60 times backwards. No way the Golf R is running same times as the Audi A3 😂😂
Manual is around 5 sec, DSG is mid to high 4
There's so much people get wrong about the Type R.
The hoodscoop does NOT cool the engine. It's for airflow.
And my 2019 Type R GT has all the Honda Senseing so I have no clue what you're talking about that it doesn't have it.
Great review as always!
Just traded in my 2015 GTI for a 2019 Type R. I will likely trade the CTR in on a MK8 R in a few years. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but the CTR is definitely the head turner.
Did you get the mk8?
Recommendation - chose one music theme for all videos, just for consistency. Other than that I enjoy all the videos :)
as a middle aged man I prefer the practicality and understatedness of the Golf, if I was in my 20's then it would be the Honda hands down!
When you launch an all wheel drive vehicle, you are supposed to slip the clutch as opposed to just dumping it
If you choose the VW theirs all kinds of aftermarket wheels and exterior packages you can change the look to make it more aggressive and less stealthier
The Type R styling is a bit too much, while the Golf R might be too understated considering it’s supposed to be an upgrade to the GTI. Obviously it’s subjective and people will be drawn to what their eyes like. FWD vs AWD is pretty much the deciding factor in my opinion.
Great comparison. Golf R for sure.
With a few simple and relatively low cost modifications the Golf R can easily surpass the Type R on acceleration and handling. So if you want a car that cost more (with markups), performs worse, and looks ridiculous, buy a type R. Oh yes and they over heat on track and have other reliability issues such as transmission, fit and finish, (remember made in England, not japan).
Looks are subjective, the handling is not. The Type R a way out performs the Golf. The transmission is not a widespread problem and the overheating is an easy fix if you're talking about upgrading the two. Plus both respond easily to ecu flashes.
@@hellboy2pt0 Yes and the handling issue in the Golf is easily fixed. The problem with the Type R is you can't easily fix the fact that it is FWD so adding more power becomes an issue. Plus the Golf is detuned a lot more than the civic and has a lot more room to grow with the AWD. That coupled with the ridiculous price gouging make the Type R civic a very unattractive option IMO.
Great Video. I’ll take the Golf R anytime. More refined and poised.
Im a honda guy but i think the golf r is faster to 100kmph ..if it was a rolling race from 100kmph to top speed , then yes, the honda will creep forward slowly till top end but not by much maybe 3-4 car lengths
While I don't love the fake vents, if you are into modding the car Honda did you a huge favor in the front. You don't have to cut through paint to do mods. Such as adding an oil cooler, or installing a front end tow hook to name some examples. There is no excuse for the fake rear vents. Full disclosure I am an owner...
Honda is a winner in the repair bill alone compared to the German car😂
Golf always was reliable and cheap to maintain lol
qsn you’re living in the past. Modern Golfs and other Volkswagens are plagued with electronic issues.
That Nazi mobile will suffer the same unreliable, problematic issues as all German cars.
@@djs18 Your unsavory stereotyping aside, your comments are behind the times, I had a mk6 GTI that was dead reliable for 6 years and my mk7.5 is the same.
Lease it
I will most likely buy CTR or golf R next yr, such a pity CTR only seats 2 legally in back. Anyone know where they fit 3rd pair seat belts? Matt black would be beautiful, should be choice
I'd honestly take the Golf. I'm liking the look of it more.
No sunroof more stability, no leeking. Less weight. Less problems
Honda Civic Type R Baby 💪,,A Beast!!!
