MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: A total shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure to replace your shoulder joint. Your main shoulder joint is made up of two bones: the top, or head of your upper arm bone, call the humerus, and part of your shoulder blade or scapula called the glenoid. Its called a ball and socket joint because the ball-like head of your humerus fits into the cup-like socket of the glenoid. A total shoulder replacement is often done to ease pain from shoulder conditions, such as arthritis, or severe bone fractures. Your joint will be replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis. It has two parts that look like the bones of the shoulder joint; a ball with a stem, and a socket. A total shoulder replacement will begin with an incision over your shoulder joint. After reaching your shoulder joint, your surgeon will remove the damaged head of your humerus. Then, a hole will be made inside your humerus. Next, the socket of the glenoid will be reshaped. Then holes will be drilled for the socket part of the prosthesis. Your surgeon will place the socket part of the prosthesis into this area and the ball part of the prosthesis will be placed into the hole in the humerus. Finally, your surgeon will slide the ball of the prosthesis into the new socket. At the end of the procedure, the incision will be closed with staples or stitches. After the procedure, you will need to wear a sling on your arm for a few weeks while your shoulder heals. For more information about a total shoulder replacement, talk to your healthcare provider.

But it’s not permanent, and will need a new one every 10 years. This was not offered to me as I was told I am not old enough at the time.

@Nina NASA eyo?
@Newthirx There was a time when toddlers would see their parents going at it, and see multiple of their siblings die. This is very tame by comparison and I see no issue with it. It's good to have more technical thinkers in the world and this seems like a great starting point!
Next that toddler will be sent to sleep by their parents reading complex medical papers about the workings of the brain, or that new knee ligament that was discovered a few years back. All interesting stuff.
My husband is having this done next week hope and pray it works

i always love to learn more and youre videos are intresting as well as helps in studies so i always wait for it thx you nucleus for your hardwork
I'm in my second year of total shoulder replacement recovery. As a drummer it's been rough, but I had other underlying issues. Before the surgery the surgeons told me it would take about a year to recover. Just after the surgery they said it would take about two years. I've heard from others who said it really takes about three years to fully recover. Year two is much better than year one, that's for sure. But I can see year three being better still.
Curious as I need a replacement and I've been told that you really can't do anything with the arm after the surgery. That I won't be able to lift anything heavier than a cup of coffee. Are you still able to do things with the arm?
@@chesmom379 I'd say you can't do much of anything for the first couple months or so (but like I mentioned earlier, I had other underlying issues). It's the kind of thing where you have to really stick to the rehab. Door-pulley exercises, then therabands, icing etc. The surgeon told me I could start lite drumming after the first three months, but after trying it the pain scared me enough to wait a full six months. Initially, yes even lifting a cup of coffee is pretty much out. But I've made a lot of progress in the past two and a half years. Pain has receded considerably. It's still there, but much better than it was. Range of motion has greatly improved. Drumming and even push-ups are back. But I have to be careful, of course. There are a few videos on my channel showing my progress from the past couple years. Good luck to you, hope that helps.
My first shoulder replacement (The second one is coming up next week, which is why I"m here). the sugeon botched the first one (Brian Grawe in Cincinanati, stay away from him!), he used a "stem" that was too large for my humurous, and broke it. He also manged to fractue the bone in another place during hte procedure< Other doctors who saw his handiwork told me that I should have sued him. I now have scar that run from collarbone to elbow and still occasionally hurts. Don't have full use of my shouler, still, and it's been years. Yes, here I am opting for another (really no choice, the othe is incedibly painful) with a different surgeon!. Good luck, everyone. And be sure to check out your surgeons better than I did the first one!

I have had 2 total shoulder replacements due to arthritis, and have never looked back. It has been about 12 years for the first and 10 for the other. I am currently 70 years old.
When did you know it was time to get it done? In my 50's but have been dealing with severe arthritis in both joints that the doc said I'll eventually need to replace.
Was the pain horrible? How long was the recovery process? I’m very active and don’t want to be laid up

Excellent content as always.
I wonder what is the main consequence of this operation. I mean, you're replacing an intense pain for another kind of pain and disability. I suppose the trade worths it.
I had a shoulder surgery, although a Bancart surgery, not this shoulder replacement one. In my case, I traded occasionally, annoying and very painful shoulder dislocations for a month of painful day and nights after the surgery, but after the healing and physicotherapy, I had a brand new shoulder that could do anything just as before my bancart tear that caused the frequent dislocations. I can do pushups, pullups, ring exercises, climb walls, reach the back of my neck from behind, anything I can do with my not operated shoulder.
I believe after the healing period and diligent physicotherapy, even this shoulder could heal perfectly and be just as good as new.
@@barnazadori9227
hello Barna, I read your reply thoroughly.
May I please ask where did you go for this surgery? and what kind of accident caused your shoulder problem?
sorry for asking a lot of questions
The main consequence is that you can only do it once due to the way it deforms the bones, and these replacements don't last forever.
@@mike4402 I could imagine that happening, but - as I lack the knowledge yet still being curious, would you (or anyone) clarify what would cause the deformation/deterioration on the joint operated on?
@@mike4402 that’s not true you can get it done more then once… a tsr usually first choice if that goes after some time then a reverse if needed
Theirs a few options

Can someone who had Total Shoulder Replacement do exercises like push ups and exercises that focus on shoulder muscles?
probably yes, but to a certain extent
Goodd question

I had this done 4 years ago. Wish I did it earlier
Thanks for the tutorial
Very helpful
Please make an video for ptosis also.
Thank you
i dont undwrstand how orthopaedics are able to move the bones enough to do such cutting insertions etc. dont the muscle tone and ligaments and capsule hold it tightly? how do you avoid injuring
As someone who will likely need this, I have the same questions.
As someone who had a compound fracture of the ankle, I do not have these questions.
This gives me shivers
From thinking that theres literally something inside you and the ball rod literally shoved to you're bones
Nice video ☺️
Bruh my shoulder started to hurt yesterday and this pop up on my recomendations now💀
Its been just over 3 months since my total shoulder replacement. My rotary cuff had also snapped, but they were that badly damaged they couldn't be repaired, which will restrict my movement. As im right handed it was hard. My arm was in a sling for 5 weeks, day & night, wasn't allowed to move it. Since then I've built up my exercise in the gym, just concentrating on moving the joint, but not allowed to use weights, the pain has now gone, but im not allowed to pick a cup of tea up. At 6 months i will have an x-ray & if all ok can start useing weights.

Do the body feel hurt after surgery + (few week) ? Or the body will adapt to it?

when you are the first to sleep
I was told there was a ligament that was detached when a shoulder replacement is performed. And, it is extremely important for this ligament to heal properly after surgery .
I have to have this done on my port shoulder.
dude fell asleep first again, bro
Ok so...how do u keep that arm alive while hammering that rod thing inside it?
Cool stuff
What about medula of the bone which the metal put inside?
Can you still do lifts after this procedure?
Or do some workout like push ups?
I am wondering as well
Yup you can but gotta rehab
i always wondered if I could improve my physical fitness if I replaced my entire skeletal structure with these artificial modifications. essentially be able to go longer and harder with less risk for injury
I doubt it because the hardware wears out in time. Then needs to be replaced after 10/15 years. So it won’t ever be as good as the real thing…
I saw a shoulder replacement surgery in my OR rotation in nursing school… the way the marrow squirted out of the humorous as the doctor HAMMERED the rod into the humorous is a visual I can never forget
Thanks. TMI.
when you are the first one to fall asleep at the sleepover(rookie mistake)

Cool stuff 😗♥️
It would seem the video leaves a lot out as far as the incision is concerned. To get to the bones in the shoulder joint it would be necessary to cut through the rotator cuff muscles, would it not? Mine are extremely tight already due to tendonosis. One would think the severed rotator cuff, stitched back together, would lose even more flexibility.
Best of my knowledge by this video thanks 👍 neucleas.

I am soon to find out for which procedure I qualify for (anatomical or reverse) next month. Sooooo much shoulder pain and restriction of movement, for years. All my hopes are with the success of this procedure, the first of two (right, and left shoulder joints need replacement.)

Crud, Better watch the torn rotator cuff video that’s even more lovelier
My left arm is smaller and weak than my right arm. I had a checkup in 2014 when I was 14 years old. The doctors said that there's a small chance that it can fix by surgery because of your eag because I had this problem since 1 years old. I don't know if in the past 7 years because of new technology my chances to get my arm fixed has increased or not.
Can we replace all bones with that..?
Wonderful animation...
Is it as easy as this 🤔??

"doctor i fell asleep first at the sleepover"
How does this work with ligaments, muscles, and such? What happens to those during this procedure?
I had my bicep severed and then reattached at a slightly lower point. I wasn't told of this before the procedure. The only way I found out about it was through a $5,000 bill sent through the mail. Luckily insurance covered it, but what a way to find out. It still doesn't look the same, two years later.
POV you fell asleep first at the sleepover
This is great, but how do they manage the rejection of the prostetis? Does the patient has to take immunosuppresants? I guess the metal is biocompatible right? I would love to know.
Thanks.
I'm not in any way qualified to talk about this, but to my knowledge most prostheses are made from titanium. For whatever reason, titanium doesn't cause foreign body reactions in the body, so immunosuppressants aren't necessary.
Tom Watson, legendary golfer, recently got a shoulder prosthesis. That’s why he probably got the best treatment.
Great stuff, this has a lot of potential, im currently following a medical biology course and i heard about titanium being the most biocompatible metal around but i didnt knew it was that compatible, i think it has to do with the layer of oxide that forms which is impermeable, thus making it unreactive with bodily fluids , i also know a lot of people with joint problems this could be a life saver for them if perfected, anyways thanks, this is pretty interesting.
@@skxarta You’re welcome, indeed. It’s interesting to read your comment. Yes, I often indirectly heard titanium is one of the most lightweight metals which may be the most optimal option for prostheses. Even, it’s also made for modern golf clubhead! Good luck with your medical biology course!
@@samswann180 I have a friend that had foot surgery and titanium was put in. She got an infection. Turns out she was allergic to the titanium
How long does the procedure typically last?
Surgery 3 hrs … can last 10-15 years or more if ur good to it
How old would someone need to be for this type of procedure? I am 32 yrs old and have chronic dislocations most of the time they happen while I am asleep on my back and I’ll awake suddenly with a dislocation. I also have had my labrum operated on when I was a teenager for the same condition but it didn’t seem to work as I still have dislocations probability 5-10x per year. Every surgeon I have seen just recommends PT and that’s it none ever seem to mention surgery or replacement?

What about the muscle attachments? How do they put it back on to the humerus?
the muscle attachment are not remove, none of them are on the removed side.
