    MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: A total shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure to replace your shoulder joint. Your main shoulder joint is made up of two bones: the top, or head of your upper arm bone, call the humerus, and part of your shoulder blade or scapula called the glenoid. Its called a ball and socket joint because the ball-like head of your humerus fits into the cup-like socket of the glenoid. A total shoulder replacement is often done to ease pain from shoulder conditions, such as arthritis, or severe bone fractures. Your joint will be replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis. It has two parts that look like the bones of the shoulder joint; a ball with a stem, and a socket. A total shoulder replacement will begin with an incision over your shoulder joint. After reaching your shoulder joint, your surgeon will remove the damaged head of your humerus. Then, a hole will be made inside your humerus. Next, the socket of the glenoid will be reshaped. Then holes will be drilled for the socket part of the prosthesis. Your surgeon will place the socket part of the prosthesis into this area and the ball part of the prosthesis will be placed into the hole in the humerus. Finally, your surgeon will slide the ball of the prosthesis into the new socket. At the end of the procedure, the incision will be closed with staples or stitches. After the procedure, you will need to wear a sling on your arm for a few weeks while your shoulder heals. For more information about a total shoulder replacement, talk to your healthcare provider.

      @Newthirx There was a time when toddlers would see their parents going at it, and see multiple of their siblings die. This is very tame by comparison and I see no issue with it. It's good to have more technical thinkers in the world and this seems like a great starting point!
      Next that toddler will be sent to sleep by their parents reading complex medical papers about the workings of the brain, or that new knee ligament that was discovered a few years back. All interesting stuff.

    I'm in my second year of total shoulder replacement recovery. As a drummer it's been rough, but I had other underlying issues. Before the surgery the surgeons told me it would take about a year to recover. Just after the surgery they said it would take about two years. I've heard from others who said it really takes about three years to fully recover. Year two is much better than year one, that's for sure. But I can see year three being better still.

    • @chesmom379

      Curious as I need a replacement and I've been told that you really can't do anything with the arm after the surgery. That I won't be able to lift anything heavier than a cup of coffee. Are you still able to do things with the arm?

    • @darkbloodrevisited
      @darkbloodrevisited 6 місяців тому

      @@chesmom379 I'd say you can't do much of anything for the first couple months or so (but like I mentioned earlier, I had other underlying issues). It's the kind of thing where you have to really stick to the rehab. Door-pulley exercises, then therabands, icing etc. The surgeon told me I could start lite drumming after the first three months, but after trying it the pain scared me enough to wait a full six months. Initially, yes even lifting a cup of coffee is pretty much out. But I've made a lot of progress in the past two and a half years. Pain has receded considerably. It's still there, but much better than it was. Range of motion has greatly improved. Drumming and even push-ups are back. But I have to be careful, of course. There are a few videos on my channel showing my progress from the past couple years. Good luck to you, hope that helps.

      My first shoulder replacement (The second one is coming up next week, which is why I"m here). the sugeon botched the first one (Brian Grawe in Cincinanati, stay away from him!), he used a "stem" that was too large for my humurous, and broke it. He also manged to fractue the bone in another place during hte procedure< Other doctors who saw his handiwork told me that I should have sued him. I now have scar that run from collarbone to elbow and still occasionally hurts. Don't have full use of my shouler, still, and it's been years. Yes, here I am opting for another (really no choice, the othe is incedibly painful) with a different surgeon!. Good luck, everyone. And be sure to check out your surgeons better than I did the first one!

      I had a shoulder surgery, although a Bancart surgery, not this shoulder replacement one. In my case, I traded occasionally, annoying and very painful shoulder dislocations for a month of painful day and nights after the surgery, but after the healing and physicotherapy, I had a brand new shoulder that could do anything just as before my bancart tear that caused the frequent dislocations. I can do pushups, pullups, ring exercises, climb walls, reach the back of my neck from behind, anything I can do with my not operated shoulder.
      I believe after the healing period and diligent physicotherapy, even this shoulder could heal perfectly and be just as good as new.

    Its been just over 3 months since my total shoulder replacement. My rotary cuff had also snapped, but they were that badly damaged they couldn't be repaired, which will restrict my movement. As im right handed it was hard. My arm was in a sling for 5 weeks, day & night, wasn't allowed to move it. Since then I've built up my exercise in the gym, just concentrating on moving the joint, but not allowed to use weights, the pain has now gone, but im not allowed to pick a cup of tea up. At 6 months i will have an x-ray & if all ok can start useing weights.

    It would seem the video leaves a lot out as far as the incision is concerned. To get to the bones in the shoulder joint it would be necessary to cut through the rotator cuff muscles, would it not? Mine are extremely tight already due to tendonosis. One would think the severed rotator cuff, stitched back together, would lose even more flexibility.

    In all our joints we have a sticky and gel like.. it is present because it gives a proper movement. The sticky gel name is( synovial fluid ) and even ligament is also present.. in all our joints

    I was told recently that I need a total shoulder replacement 🥺 but I’m too young. Apparently they only last about 10/15 years and they gotta be redone. Apparently the maximum you can get it two bc of the amount of bone they remove to make it work.
