Steve Spurrier, one of Tennessee's greatest sons, became its most hated enemy | Beef History

  • How does a talented high school quarterback in East Tennessee who grew up watching the Volunteers end up becoming the school's chief tormentor for the better part of two decades? The answer: he's Steve Spurrier, the man who helped build the Florida-Tennessee into a rivalry that mattered, left for the NFL, and then went back to the SEC East to give Tennessee a little more trouble.

      Dabo took everything very seriously. Coach Spurrier has always poked fun at other adversaries, but Dabo took everything he said personally. So Steve had a good time with him and the very serious Clemson fans. They despised our beloved Coach.

      @@JillKirchner - I loved Steve Spurrier, truly I did, even when his wit was turned against my beloved Crimson Tide. Then he quit on his team when faced with his first ever losing season. If any player would have walked like that they would have been branded, and so I branded Steve. In the end, when things finally got hard for the "Head Ball Coach" he packed up and ran away with his tail between his legs. For me there is but one word for his legacy .......... quitter.

    Steve Spurrier had this little thing that's discouraged for virtually everyone in the public eye now: a personality. He wasn't afraid to fire off some slick insults to get a rise out of his opponents. Him throwing jabs and stirring things up brought tons of media attention and got fans on both sides excited. That kind of stuff is what made rivalry games all over the country fun and must see TV. Made those games feel like they meant so much. Now, all the players just comment on each other's IG's and opt out of bowl games.

    It comes down to this...The Head Ball Coach lived in Johnson City, and played football for Science Hill High School. He was always a star athlete in any sport, but football became his love. When it came time to go to college, he wanted to go to U.T., but they were not interested due to the fact that his style of play would not transition into their offensive style. The only university that wanted his style of play was Florida. He had a wonderful visit in Gainesville and decided that's where he would go. The rest is history.
    I've met Coach Spurrier a few times, and my mother grew up in Kingsport, TN. Kingsport and Johnson City were huge rivals. It's been great to hear all the stories about the rivalries and The Head Ball Coach from my grandfather and uncles. One uncle in particular, who was a die hard U.T. fan stated the only thing he didn't like about Coach Spurrier was that he didn't coach for U.T.

  • @zacharytaylor3178
    @zacharytaylor3178 5 років тому +33

    There’s one more important part to this rivalry that I can’t believe wasn’t mentioned in this video:
    In 2013, a 5-7 Tennessee team upset South Carolina. If Tennessee doesn’t win that game, Spurrier goes to the SECCG and possibly takes South Carolina all the way to the national championship game. After that year, all of South Carolina’s best players left, their championship window was locked shut, and Spurrier quit less than two years later.
    Tennessee got the last laugh out of this rivalry. Spurrier gave South Carolina a championship window, and Tennessee closed it.

    Can’t believe you didn’t mention the 1999 game that the refs made a terrible call on Jabar Gaffney’s TD in the final seconds. That one stung UT hard, too. That 1999 team basically had everyone back from 1998. If UT had held on in that game then they very likely had a rematch with FSU in the BCS national championship. They had beaten eventual SEC champ Alabama on the road and had their number. So, it would’ve been easy to assume they would’ve won the SEC title and get the bid to the BCS. A huge missed opportunity for UT at the hands of Spurrier.

    Just yesterday, Spurrier, now the head coach of the AAF’s (Alliance of American Football) Orlando Apollos, took a jab at UT after a road win against San Antonio when he said the crowd at the Alamodome “was just as loud as ‘Rocky Top,’ but the Swamp is much louder.”

    Tennessee cheered for Spurrier because this state has the worst, memory-impaired, fairweather fans in sports. I grew up in the latter years of the Fulmer era and I still cry every time Florida beats us. I imagine I’m one of the only ones.

      I also cried sir. I grew up close to Johnson City and would remember riding by science hill's football field (spurrier field) asking my dad how could spurrier be from TN and not coach there? UF/UT has had many heartbreaking games for us.

    Food for thought. If Spurrier never went to Gainsville and indeed went back to Knoxville and became a head coach there do the Gators ever get a turn around? Probably at some point but I don't think it would be as grand.

      Still don't know how that made any sense to the bowl committee. Vols 10-2, Gators 9-2, Vols win head to head in Gainesville and were one win away from a national championship appearance, yet Gators go to the better bowl.

    • @Mikgwerd
      @Mikgwerd 4 роки тому

      @@Mikgwerd oh like when Oklahoma still made the national championship in '03 after getting killed by #15 K State in the Big XII title game? Lol just saying that's a flawed logic. Plenty of BCS bowls took conference championship game losers around that time.

    • @Mikgwerd
      @Mikgwerd 4 роки тому

      @@codymclemore4816 terrible example because there were multiple 2 loss teams vying for top 2 slots in 03, and the BCS was binding for the the top 2 teams in the computer calculated rankings. Plus, we're only talking about "new years 4" bowl games, where optics matter more to bowl committees (so they were more free to deny teams that they feel were embarrassing) and they weren't as restricted by the BCS back then as they are to the CFP rankings today.
