- Getting the most out of your supercharged personal watercraft really isn't all that difficult when you keep it properly maintained and follow the manufacturer's instructions. For our long term test unit - a 2018 Sea-Doo RXT-X 300 - we knew we weren't getting the best our machine could put out because it had been nearly 50 hours since it's last service. So today, we show you not only the necessary steps how to perform your Sea-Doo's 50-hour maintenance; such as an oil change, swapping the oil filter, as well as gapping and replacing the spark plugs; but also how to unlock your RXT-X's inner beast with the use of RIVA Racing's Speed Control Override Module. This one part can unchain your supercharged machine to hit 75mph with ZERO other modifications! Think it's too good to be true? Watch us do it right before your eyes here!

I like how it is plug and play, rather than a reflash. Makes me want to get one of the new seadoo 300 models.
Absolutely the best "bang for your buck" part you could add - without voiding your warranty.
Meticulous instructions for the oil change -- thanks Kevin 👍
Awesome video .
So very detailed on instructions .
Just order the SCOM .
You are the man.
Thank you so much !
You're very welcome! Did we help you make the decision to buy it?
This was a great video. Will watch more videos to save myself some cash in the future. Really want to install the SCOM...
THANKS!!
Glad it was helpful!
Proper torque on spark plugs is critical, it is easy to find in your manual.
17 foot pounds is what is recommended; which you'll find is commonly referred by ASE mechanics as "snug" or "hand tight."
@@watercraftjournal I use a torque wrench and don't think you would loosen by hand. The washers must be crushed.
Great vid being informative and to the point. Thank you and glad I subscribed as all your vids are well done.
Scott N thank you! Help spread the word.
Great tutorial Big Kev!
We hope it was helpful
You’re the man good stuff
Thank you!
Great video. How are the sponsoons. do they add much of anything in controlled turning?
You gotta read the article! They are 100% night and day.
How tight do you torque the back seat deck when putting it back on?
Did you ever find this out? I'm looking for that information today.
Can you do this for the Kawasaki 310. Great info!! 💯✅✌️
Kawasakis are 10x's easier. No tricks to it.
Are the scom units ecu locked to one ski??? Please help this is my second scom i might have gotten scammed
I have the RXTX 300 2018 , you have a part # for this RIVA plug and play item ? Thank you in advance for your time and video.
Yes, Bob! Click the hyperlink in the video description, for goodness' sake!
Hey i have a 2018 rxt 300 tried 2 scoms didnt work maybe the 2017 and down mught work?
How many modifications do you suppose it takes before it's no longer "bone-stock"?
Admittedly, true "bone stock" would've been with stock sponsons. The RIVA sponsons provide some drag. If the blades were moved up, I might've picked up some speed.
Good Stuff!!! I'm looking to buy a new Sea Doo any suggestions of a newer one that will ride similar to my 97 gsx, that I love to pieces?
My 2023 rxtx 300 won’t go over 60 mph on flat lake water 😢
Hi Kevin, do you know if the SCOM is compatible with the SeaDoo factory X-module that adds the Ski mode? I think it plugs into the same spot?
Thanks,
DC
Dan Conlan No the X-module does not plug into the same spot as the SCOM. Watching this video and reading the article that accompanies it should clear that up.
Thanks for the quick reply Kevin, I appreciate it. I went to order the SCOM at RIVA for my 2019 RXT X300 and saw this note at the bottom of the order page:
NOTE: Stock ECU limits peak RPM for first 5 hours of operation. Top speed increases should be measured after 5 hour break in period. Cannot be connected inline with BRP accessory modules on 2019 & newer Sea-Doo models. So do you know if the x ski module is not considered a BRP accessory module? Sorry to keep asking questions!
Thanks,
DC
No, it's not. The RIVA SCOM was installed on a RXT-X 300 as you can see.
FYI:
Hi DC,
A new answer to your question has been received.

Q: I have a 2019 RXT X300 with the x mode ski Module will this still work? I’m asking based on the NOTE: Stock ECU limits peak RPM for first 5 hours of operation. Top speed increases should be measured after 5 hour break in period. Cannot be connected inline with BRP accessory modules on 2019 & newer Sea-Doo models. Thanks

A: Unfortunately, only one module may be added at a time. While not ideal, you can switch from one module to another as needed without issue.
Does sacrifice oil have to be the same 5w 40 synthetic blend or any cheap one would do?
Ideally, you'd like it to be the same quality as a cheaper oil may have inferior bonds or even detergents, which will break down the bonds of a superior oil.
The Watercraft Journal would 5w-30 work, it was the only synthetic blend i could find
In our video you can see us use a non-XPS brand for the sacrifice oil. Although BRP doesn't recommend it, it is doable. You should be fine.
Everybody has different hand strength, torque wrenches are consistent.
Clearly you don’t buy tools from Harbor Freight. J/K
This guide isn’t for those who aren’t capable with tools, but those comfortable with performing their own service.
@@watercraftjournal I rebuild engines for a hobby, following the torque recommendations from the factory is not a sign of incompetence.
Funny, I thought I’d be called out more for not using anti-seize on the threads more than torquing spark plugs.
@@watercraftjournal if you are changing plugs every oil change you don't need anti seize. Modern cars go 100k plus without changing plugs, anti seize matters more. But using it can't hurt. Aquiring and using the right tools for each job takes a lifetime and a fortune, but if your love the sound of power it is a small price.
Clearly you’re not consulting the manufacturer’s recommendations; they call for anti-seize on the plugs, which we failed to do for the same reasons you mentioned.
May I ask what do you use for your cheap sacrifice oil?
Did you see what we used in the video?
@@watercraftjournal Yes, but it was hard to see the weight or if it was a synthetic blend? (it was blurry on my end) Thank you for your help.
Do you remove the screw on spark plug tips on the 2016 sea doo 4tec with the newer ignition coils that screw to the valve cover? I know the tips had to be removed on the older style ones that didn't have a screw.
Nope
Not a bad effort I had a RXT 255 i s that used to do 73 mile an hour out of the box or 117km that was in Australia
Tassie1966 was that per 3rd party GPS or just the speedometer? Albeit heavier, the iS-equipped S3 hull is faster and an overall better handling hull than the ST3.
That was on the speedometer I agree the S3 Hull is definitely a better handling and personally think its a dryer Hull then the ST3
Is it only US/Canada models that are GPS restricted? It’s my understanding that the EU market ones are not.
How do you use a dail indicator on spark plugs ?
It's an error, Kevin meant "gap tool".
How do you reset the computer?
Since we didn't have a BUDS computer we had to go to the dealer to get the timer reset.
What do you mean? So I have to have something reset before I can use the module?
Hi Kevin please tell me now when I put a riva stage 1 kit to my yamaha ho engine. I have this 8500 rpm tune. How often now I must change Oil and do service now when he run 8500 rpm. Thans have a nice day
No. At those RPM you better have the spring retainer kit. You're operating in a completely custom world now. Go ask RIVA.
I don’t understand this comment. Obviously there’s a language barrier.
@@watercraftjournal i mean how offten i must service my jetski when I ride on tune that have 8500 rps?
Oh I understand that and I cannot answer that because you’re now operating well outside of the engine’s original perimeters. Ask RIVA now.
Does the scom void your warranty? Also if I remove it before I take in for service of any sort will it store information that will void my warranty ?
Did you listen to Kevin? It doesn't touch your ECU in any way whatsoever. It interrupts the speed limiter signal between the dashboard and the ECU. It doesn't store anything.
Nice video and instructions but damn....turn the music down or off.
If it's too loud you're too old. ;)
sacrifice oil may be the funniest thing ive ever heard of ,if you cant do the service properly just pay the professionals...
Stick to muscle cars
...or you could possibly learn from professional engine builders and performance tuners and add it to your routine. Y'know, "learning."
@@watercraftjournal For my 2012 GTI, the factory service manual states after the initial oil extraction to "fully depress the throttle lever and hold it while cranking engine for 10 seconds" then repeat the oil extraction step. Is this not recommended for your model or do you think the sacrificial oil process is better? Thanks in advance.
@@boandjill I am curious of the same thing.
