This statement is patently false and multiple people have proved it on UA-cam. Even with plate armor and chainmail an English longbowman with bodkin tipped arrows could penetrate that armor with relative ease.

Reason is if it's to stop bullets the way they weave the Kevlar is more loose so it catches the bullet and better spread out energy so the bullet doesn't go through. If they weave it tighter it would be more stab proof but less bullet proof. Or it could have 2 different kind of layers. If they had a ceramic or steel plate underneath that Kevlar vest you would have both stab and bullet proof-ness but usually those make it much heavier to carry.

IIIA body armor isn't designed to stop bladed weapons. You either need a combo IIIA/Stab Resistant vest or just a Stab Resistant vest by itself. Very different technology.
Depends on the armor manufacturer. Some are better then others. Some are shit should never be worn. I've seen blades cut through kavlar like it was butter while other times it just tickles the wearer. The armor was the same level. However with just a vest instead of a plate. You should be slightly more worried about stab wounds then cuts.
I was just about to recommend stabbing before you said you’d try it! Kevlar is made up of fibrous layers (correct me if I’m wrong it’s been awhile since I researched Kevlar) meaning that cutting isn’t exactly 100% effective, but thin, sharp puncturing weapons (like ice picks or even particularly sharp knitting needles) are really good at getting through it. The more things change, the more things say the same, I guess?
I think a Falcon should've been included. While other bladessre often designed for more multipurpose use, a falchion is exclusively (afaik) engineered for cutting so it would be interesting to see how it compares

Bladed weapons are terrible against armor in general, however I have been told by severally police officers I know (I have family and friends in the police force), that just because their armor is bullet resistant, does not mean they are stab resistant.
There is another type of weave for blade stoppage. Kind of has to be built into the layers or as a soft insert. 3a is ballistic for bullets, 2a typically has a few stab/cut resistant layers.
Yes the japanese Longsword specifically designed to do little more than CUT and SLASH through flesh and most padded armors and little else is - unsurprisingly - capable or cutting through modern blade proof armors pretty well. Though to be fair, Kevlar is more for stab proofing, isn't it?
I'm not surprised. Textile armour was very common in history and showed its usefulness a lot. If you want to get through it with a cut though you should definitely use better weapons. Get a well made great sword or poleaxe and have it professionally sharpened and professionally wielded against the dummy and you'll see the kevlar completely destroyed and unable to protect the wearer.
Knives and stabbing attacks are far more of a threat to kevlar. Especially to older makes of vests that police still do or used to wear. Obviously the vests provide a lot of protection they just aren't literally impenetrable.
This just made me realize that the katana and other curved swords are probably best because the curve gives a better cut against cloth. If guns never made it past muskets then kevlar might've eventually been equivalent to super armor
The curve only matters for extreme examples like Indian tulwars. The curvature on katana is negligible and is not going to have any noticeable effect on cutting. Katana cut well by virtue of their geometry, not by being curved.
While the katana did get close if you were actually swinging that at someone wearing Kevlar they'd presumably be moving away from you at the same time, lessening the force of your swing
I'm actually VERY surprised a modern protective vest at standard issue isn't stab, slash, and bullet resistant I've watched both shorts and think the standard should be re evaluated
And just as a thought this is a base line damage per hit here shown.(control) The practical user of some weapon examples would be more of a test to see how well it would hold up. However the likelihood it still cuts or slashes through to you is marginally debatable, seeing as it works like super small, strong and flexible chainmail. So you might not die as quick so.👍
this vest was great 8 out of 10 it held up great in a lot of fights even a few slashes from a noble knight but the ninjas you have to watch out for. it just doesn't hold up as much with a couple of slashes with a katana but I still prefer my golden chest plate
It preformed about how I expected, all I have ever said is that primitive weapons are typically more effective and dangerous than most people think especially when it comes to most modern body armor.
That looks like soft armor. Ya that’s the stuff we wear UNDER the actual body armor to prevent spall/shrapnel from the plate from killing the wearer. Standard issue SAPIs are level III not IIIA meaning they can stop M80 ball (your average .308/7.62x51 nato) while IIIA is only rated for pistol rounds up to .44 magnum.
At that point if they are that close you have already lost, because even if it doesn’t go through, that’s still gonna break some ribs at that level of force or the very least knock you on your a$$.
And if there was plates in there they wouldn’t of gotten thru at all. That being said Kevlar isn’t knife proof just bullet proof to a certain level. You can easily stab thru level 3 Kevlar
When I first started as security in a hospital they issued us level 3a undershirt vests. I still credit that thing for saving my life. We had a guy come in on bathsalts carrying a machete. We managed to talk him outside where he fucking lost it. I was at the front of the group so he swung the machete at me lol. I moved just enough that it grazed my shoulder and cut my vest. It wasn't a sharp machete but the blade was beat up so more of a rip than a slice but still. I got out of it with 2 stitches and a tetanus, without that vest I would have been way worse off. I wear steel plates in an outer carrier (with a spall pad) now. More worried about knives but hospitals are soft targets
I can say thought that level 2 did not pass a penetration test (with a cold steel recon tanto). But we did run the tests on expired soft plates. Level 3a still held up for the most part but you'll want a trauma pad. It left a solid dent in the post we hung the vest on

So the answer is can you push an ice pick or a sharp knife or even a screwdriver straight through a couple of 3A best, yes absolutely. Will that same 3A body armor stop a pistol round, yes.
IIIA body armor isn't designed to stop bladed weapons. You either need a combo IIIA/Stab Resistant vest or just a Stab Resistant vest by itself. Very different technology.
Katana cut deeper because the blade was longer so the edge had longer contact with the vest.
I mean it makes sense. Kevlar is a really strong fiber and while it can handle brute force really well, a cut can fuck it up really easly.
Makes sense considering that the Kevlar fobers are meant to kind of catch it and not stop slashing.
Depends on the armor manufacturer. Some are better then others. Some are shit should never be worn. I've seen blades cut through kavlar like it was butter while other times it just tickles the wearer. The armor was the same level. However with just a vest instead of a plate. You should be slightly more worried about stab wounds then cuts.
I was just about to recommend stabbing before you said you’d try it! Kevlar is made up of fibrous layers (correct me if I’m wrong it’s been awhile since I researched Kevlar) meaning that cutting isn’t exactly 100% effective, but thin, sharp puncturing weapons (like ice picks or even particularly sharp knitting needles) are really good at getting through it. The more things change, the more things say the same, I guess?
I think a Falcon should've been included. While other bladessre often designed for more multipurpose use, a falchion is exclusively (afaik) engineered for cutting so it would be interesting to see how it compares
So fun fact the only truly accurate way to truly test Kevlar vs different obstruct is to have enough vests for every weapon or interchangeable Kevlar playing because they way Kevlar works is the more impacts or in this case cuts it takes the weaker it gets so it didn’t matter if it was a katana a long sword or a dagger at the end there all three would’ve cut through
Bladed weapons are terrible against armor in general, however I have been told by severally police officers I know (I have family and friends in the police force), that just because their armor is bullet resistant, does not mean they are stab resistant.
There is another type of weave for blade stoppage. Kind of has to be built into the layers or as a soft insert. 3a is ballistic for bullets, 2a typically has a few stab/cut resistant layers.

Yes the japanese Longsword specifically designed to do little more than CUT and SLASH through flesh and most padded armors and little else is - unsurprisingly - capable or cutting through modern blade proof armors pretty well.

Rough test for a Kukri. The whole purpose of the blade is to use the inner edge, otherwise it is just lightweight, convex crescent axe.
I'm not surprised. Textile armour was very common in history and showed its usefulness a lot.
If you want to get through it with a cut though you should definitely use better weapons. Get a well made great sword or poleaxe and have it professionally sharpened and professionally wielded against the dummy and you'll see the kevlar completely destroyed and unable to protect the wearer.
A spike vest might be better suited to this. No complaints though. Good test with a consistent strike.
Knives and stabbing attacks are far more of a threat to kevlar. Especially to older makes of vests that police still do or used to wear. Obviously the vests provide a lot of protection they just aren't literally impenetrable.
you should re test this using something softer under the kevlar instead of the wood to better represent human tissues

Try thrusting, I've heard that polyamide fibers can resist cutting, but are weak against piercing weapons that simply pushes them apart.

This just made me realize that the katana and other curved swords are probably best because the curve gives a better cut against cloth. If guns never made it past muskets then kevlar might've eventually been equivalent to super armor
The curve only matters for extreme examples like Indian tulwars. The curvature on katana is negligible and is not going to have any noticeable effect on cutting. Katana cut well by virtue of their geometry, not by being curved.

While the katana did get close if you were actually swinging that at someone wearing Kevlar they'd presumably be moving away from you at the same time, lessening the force of your swing
I'm actually VERY surprised a modern protective vest at standard issue isn't stab, slash, and bullet resistant I've watched both shorts and think the standard should be re evaluated
And just as a thought this is a base line damage per hit here shown.(control) The practical user of some weapon examples would be more of a test to see how well it would hold up. However the likelihood it still cuts or slashes through to you is marginally debatable, seeing as it works like super small, strong and flexible chainmail. So you might not die as quick so.👍

this vest was great 8 out of 10
it held up great in a lot of fights even a few slashes from a noble knight but the ninjas you have to watch out for. it just doesn't hold up as much with a couple of slashes with a katana but I still prefer my golden chest plate

It preformed about how I expected, all I have ever said is that primitive weapons are typically more effective and dangerous than most people think especially when it comes to most modern body armor.

3a is not rated for bladed weapons. Only firearms up to 44mag. specific slash and stabproof vests do exist
That looks like soft armor. Ya that’s the stuff we wear UNDER the actual body armor to prevent spall/shrapnel from the plate from killing the wearer. Standard issue SAPIs are level III not IIIA meaning they can stop M80 ball (your average .308/7.62x51 nato) while IIIA is only rated for pistol rounds up to .44 magnum.
Honestly wouldn't be going for cutting at all, but actually, given your results with the swords, might be a better idea than I thought.

At that point if they are that close you have already lost, because even if it doesn’t go through, that’s still gonna break some ribs at that level of force or the very least knock you on your a$$.

And if there was plates in there they wouldn’t of gotten thru at all. That being said Kevlar isn’t knife proof just bullet proof to a certain level. You can easily stab thru level 3 Kevlar

finally.....now I have an evidence that the katana have its advantage and didn't useless as someone try to say.
When I first started as security in a hospital they issued us level 3a undershirt vests. I still credit that thing for saving my life. We had a guy come in on bathsalts carrying a machete. We managed to talk him outside where he fucking lost it. I was at the front of the group so he swung the machete at me lol. I moved just enough that it grazed my shoulder and cut my vest. It wasn't a sharp machete but the blade was beat up so more of a rip than a slice but still. I got out of it with 2 stitches and a tetanus, without that vest I would have been way worse off. I wear steel plates in an outer carrier (with a spall pad) now. More worried about knives but hospitals are soft targets
I can say thought that level 2 did not pass a penetration test (with a cold steel recon tanto). But we did run the tests on expired soft plates. Level 3a still held up for the most part but you'll want a trauma pad. It left a solid dent in the post we hung the vest on

1 problem, your swing. Not really a cutting swing. Only on the long sword but it's a long sword it's inheritently gonna make u swing for a cut.
