Additionally, different types of microphones have different [polar patterns] that dictate the directions they capture noise from. I'm not sure what model he's using here, but it looks like it's likely a Cardioid pattern, which focuses on drawing noise from directly in front of it while limiting the noise it picks up from the sides or rear. He grabbed from behind the diaphragm, while you grabbed from in front of it. I can't say for sure if it IS live or not, but that "discrepancy" isn't as unrealistic as it seems. Also: While it was obviously recorded before the rest of the performance, it could easily have still been a live take of his vocals with any possible errors engineered out.
