I think mythic paths make this a incredible game. Back when BG2 did specific class quests, I wished there was more to it, and while SWTOR had class quests I feel it was ultimately hindered by fact it was a MMO. The fact you have 9 completely different paths and endings, that are almost 9 different stories, is pretty epic. It makes going back to regular rpgs like Kingmaker, or even upcoming rpgs difficult because Mage or Fighter, it's the same game. Here Lich or Angel are quite different experiences. Your point on Angel, I had opposite reaction, having played Angel first I kind of wished I had not, as it made the other mythic paths feel like they were missing certain steps at times. I am almost 300 in and can't wait to keep going back, I love the world, and can't wait for the next Adventure Path.

I'm brand new to CRPG videogames (I did play DnD many years ago). I love this game and I love the complexity. I will admit I do get frustrated when my spells miss or are resisted but truthfully that's what I wanted. I was tired playing games with the same old magic systems. I still have a lot to learn but it is worth it. And I really applaud the developers for the sheer amount of work that went into creating this game.

I had been playing on Core and got up to that blighted ancient treant in the Wintersun area before I stopped, roughly 85hrs in, but you've convinced me to pick it up again and lower the difficulty to something I find actually fun, instead of trying to force my way through Core for the achievements. Thanks Mortismal!

I enjoyed thoroughly my 250+ hours of my run with the game (my objective was to get "So much of me" and "Ascension" full achievements on my first playthrough and I managed to do so. I liked it more than Kingmaker (which I held in very high regard). It's by no means perfect, but Owlcat, in my eyes at least, has taken the Kingmaker CRPG formula and refined it. The mythic paths are probably my favorite gameplay/narrative aspect of the whole game. There is so much replayability in this game it's mind boggling.
Not many people enjoyed the Crusade aspect of the game, but I actually wished they would've developed it further and not be so surface level. This gameplay system gave me major nostalgia to go play Heroes of Might and Magic again (which funnily enough led into me playing Disciples Liberation after WOTR and that led me to going back to play all Disciples games. I will follow those with all King's Bounty games and HOMM from beginning all the way to end (i'm on a bit of a strategy high rn).
With that said..it's my GOTY, because it surpassed my expectations that I had for it and replaced Kingmaker in my top 10 games of all time list).
I really hope Owlcat continues adapting Pathfinder modules/campaigns, because there are way too few developers that work on actual legit CRPG's. I will never grow tired of this formula. Obsidian is off doing Skyrim Pillars, Larian is busy with Divinity's Gate III (a small joke..I'm actually extremely hyped for BG3), Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 is in a void somewhere probably never to be seen again so we don't have many options out there for us CRPG lovers.
Thank you again for the lenghty review of this game and what you continue doing, even though to many people (even myself) may probably never invest that much time to try to 100% every RPG...there's way too many other games to play out there to dedicate my time to more than 1 playthrough per game, even though in that playthrough I tend to test every branching path I come across and take my most desired option.

I agree with you that the alignment options in dialogue can feel off because they come as unsimpathetic to your allies, even if woljif is a thief, he's still good natured and sometimes the options when you select (Good) come off as conceited and having no sympathy for him. Chaotic or evil sometimes seems like should be the (Good) option. Ultimately the game with the companions is about companionship and the dialogue aligment options fail to do this because they are fixed into a morale that lacks the context of a relationship.

I gotta say what I adore about this game, is how early you can hire/retrain. If you sell everything, you come out of the tutorial with enough gold to hire 3-4 mercenaries. I know it's a story game and I should use the default story characters, but using a party built only of DnD/pathfinder characters I've played in campaigns is to cool.

I got kingmaker because it was half the price of this game and it's amazing. I've been playing pathfinder for like 5/6 years now and it's pretty faithful to the tabletop game. I love being able to play solo when the gang can't get together. I'll be picking up this game once I'm done kingmaker.

I just started playing, never got into crpgs before this game and i love it. I do agree and wish they would put in a “training” act for first time players. It took me hours and lots of on/off debates on if i still wanted to keep playing the first week i bought the game. It’s overwhelming, it’s not a bad thing just they need a sort of “sandbox training guide” or training/intro act for very new players (especially when most of us are coming from arpg backgrounds)

I've had a lot of fun with the game, I really enjoy Camellia's romance story, and just her character in general. I just think it's unique to what I've seen around in other games, I like that they were willing to explore that kind of character too, as weird as it was at times. I also enjoyed the council meetings where you could ask the opinions of your companions, there's so many of them and yet they're all full of dialogue, it's crazy to be honest.

Great review! For me, I'm about 50 hours into my first playthrough and it's been a blast so far. I chose to play as a Gendarme Cavalier and the mounted combat has been incredibly enjoyable. I also went Azata as my mythic path and I'm liking it so far as well. Idk if it's for the Azata path only but the Azata song gets played in the background a lot. If it is only for Azata's, it's a nice touch. As for companions, I definitely agree with you that there's one for everyone and each of them can work really well depending on your party since each of them fill a role that you might need.

Clocked over 300h for now ,1 full playthrough on Hard difficulty: 20lvl mutation warrior Angel with all companions 20lvl in starting classes no dips and i had a great time.
Bounced back from Kingmaker, will return to it soon - i have found start of game in Kingmaker much harder due to weaker characters, with added time restrictions it was a bit stressful. It was much cleaner in Wotr, maybe due to MC 2h fighter class which who was my strongest party character all way from lvl 1 to 20. Bloomed hard on LVL1 chopping Water elemental alone and stayed that with Vital strike (he has only Vital strike on a bar - so like act4 i could miss, hit for 600 or crit for 2.4k) to the end.
As for now, for me PF: WoTR is among Baldurs Gate 2, Gothic series, Heroes of Might and Magic 3/4 and World of Warcraft (first 10 years) as best games in my over 30years gaming history.

I think War of the Righteous is probably the best crpg I've ever played. Compared to the those popular ones a few years ago, it is just so much more fun, but my intimate knowledge of DnD 3.5 rules also greatly helped the learning curve. I also think that high level (10th+) of Pathfinder is really more fun as a computer game than pen and paper; the number crunching and attending to details gets overwhelming, but the computer does all the grunt work for you.

This is a good review Mortismal, and I agree with everything you said. But if I may, two small things I would have added:
    - The music was not mentioned and I think it really deserves the honors, the whole score is great and the themes for mythic power and for each mythic path are amazing.
    - This may be debatable but I think it's worth mentioning that despite the game being huge and full of content, act 5 is really a bit empty and rushed (and the companion quests that end there are all rather unticlimactic). I liked the ending of the game per se, and I liked act 6, but act 5 was a bit underwhelming.

My respect for 100% this game. I played through it one and a half time and it is a great game. But to complete it… this game feels too long (80 hours for one play through doesn’t really encourage repeated play) and too slow (the over-world and crusade mode being example) for me to comfortably try all out the mythic paths.

The one thing this game needs is the ability to explore a few more epic/end game areas right after you get your final mythic level and right before you decide to finish the game. Game was pretty challenging on core level and my only disappointment was that I could not finish the last fight on core because it was way too tough. Played the trickster path and the options throughout the game were pretty funny. I strongly recommend this game if you want to waste a significant portion of your life :)

As far as I know, he breaks your phylactery but you get a quest to break his phylactery and what not, probably can't turn into a lich, but there are quests and dialogues there.

So I put a few thousand hours into Kingmaker because I love that game and have started both a core playthrough (level 10 now) and a hard playthrough (level 4 after Defender's Heart fight) on wotr. I love the game yet the will say the challenge level is really strong even with my prior experience steamrolling some content while barely getting through other content after multiple reloads. To me the hardest part coming into this game isn't the general combat mechanics because you improve that every fight, it is the specific need for specific spells/abilities during specific encounters that you get no warnings about and the difference of having your characters set up ahead of time to deal with them is night/day from the experience of not having them on any party members. I absolutely love the game in so many ways yet my Seelah at level 10 has probably been carrying around a permanent Sickened debuff since maybe level 5 or 6. The debuffs you can pick up can nerf your character into the ground without any discernable ways to remove them. Either way amazing game.

The game sounds interesting, although I have to question impartiality when you are effectively considered an “influencer” by the devs. Free copy, early access etc. I am seeing less positive reviews elsewhere, so I have to try and balance the different opinions. But you are upfront about your association, which counts for a lot compared to people who hide their relationship. Overall, this is sounding like another good cRPG.

Mortismal has my confidence as somebody who'd present their honest opinions. And as a counter point to Mort's comment, I feel that the alignment based dialogue in this game is a plus. I'm played many games where it felt like non-good alignments were unsupported. So while this game doesn't handle it perfectly, it does provide many options to play a character who's evil, or chaotic, and not just traditionally "good". Its the fact that they offer so many opportunities which allows us to look at those opportunities and realize that the writer's interpretations of what it means to be "evil" or "chaotic" don't perfectly lineup with our own.

Very god review. As for the topic of proactive instead of reactive, the devs actually take it to the next level, even from Kingmaker. This game doesn't require you to proactive, it requires you to de-facto metagame through it. Sometimes even reloading to switch up your spells before encounters. Just so you can NOT die. No Dungeon Master worth his dice would make you play that way :(

Honestly, crusade is underwhelming. I've played a lot of Total war, heroes, king's bounty, so this part of the game is just not good. It's not bad, and to some extent I even enjoy it, as it is reminiscent to me, as of the games I've played. But it's not a good strategy and it's too big to be a minigame.

    • @jonalen4217
      @jonalen4217 2 роки тому +6

Not to detract from what you're saying, but its also not entirely fair to compare the battles from a game like Total War, to the battles in this. Only because of the amount of time and energy each studio invests into each aspect of their game. Total War thrives or dies, based on the quality of its battles. This game lives or dies on the quality of its party combat. The crusade aspect comes secondary.

    • @unknownunknowner2903

@@jonalen4217 I guess, you've misunderstood me. I do not like the crusade, not because it is worse then in Total War. Let me explain, for example, yoy want to play Diablo IV, and after the first act you're told, hey man, stop right there, you should assemble your army, build your city, you can't make it to the next area without your army. Will that appeal to the players. If you are playing any game, you are not supposed to play the game of the other genre. The crusade is not as good as Total war, and it don't have to be. But if you are an extensive strategy player - it's not interesting, if you're not - what is the reason to have it in the game. And the crusade is a huge portion of the game. Half of the act 5 is moving your army around, act 3 is preparing all your army, and such a huge portion of the game is not really interesting, coping with the brain-dead AI, mostly with basic infantry/archers/cavalry. If it is like that, why fo the Owlcat has to pay time at all?

    • @jonalen4217
      @jonalen4217 2 роки тому +1

@@unknownunknowner2903 OH, that actually makes a lot of sense. Yeah, if a player loves party based cRPGs, do they really want to pay the tax of playing through any other kind of game, to progress back into the game they wanted from the start?
Is there no option to automate that system? I heard that Kingmaker allowed players to automate the kingdom management. It seems like what you're saying is; "if Owlcat wants to experiment, then its better if playing that experiment is optional."

@@jonalen4217 There is an option of auto crusade, where you do not have to do anything. I have not actually tried it, as during the crusade you get special projects, which are related to certain quests. So if you have the auto crusade on, you are locked out of secret ending, one of the mythic paths and crusade relics, which are actually good items, so that's not OK, as for me. Perhaps they've patched some of it, can't say, because I haven't tracked that.

I'm sitting at 438hrs now (though a few of those are probably idle) and the thing that keeps me coming back is the rewarding nature of Core difficulty, and wanting to see all the Mythic paths.
Outside of a few encounters that require more cheese than strats (looking at you Playful Darkness), almost every encounter on Core felt like a strategic battle and was really fun. I almost regret 'wasting' 60ish hours on my first playthrough on Story difficulty as a Lich - since so much of that kit is really rewarding on higher difficulties.
I still have likely clocked more hours in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 than I have in any of the Pathfinder games, but I really enjoy the mechanics and their implementation here. The story is pretty good, and was fun and surprising in spots, but the companions still need a little work IMO. They're not bad - don't get me wrong - but most of them could use a little bit more work on the writing side.
For my own personal scale I'd rate companions like this: Mass Effect > Dragon Age > Baldur's Gate (1 and 2) > Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous > Pathfinder: Kingmaker.
Baldur's Gate may not have had the most robust companion roster, or the most interesting side quests, but it did have Minsc - quite probably my favorite NPC of all time. Both the writers, and the voice actor, knocked that one out of the park.
Baldur's Gate also had Viconia .. and um, that was a favorite NPC for lots of other reasons I'd rather not get into.

Does turning off the crusade mode affect the game like it did in Kingmaker? Turning the kingdom mode off nearly broke my first playthrough. However, whereas I enjoyed the kingdom mode eventually, I really, REALLY hate the crusade mode to the point that I don’t even enjoy playing the game anymore just because I have to slog through it. It’s a shame because I absolutely love the rest of the game and I want to play it. So I’m considering getting rid of the crusade management all together, but I fear it will break my playthrough.

Great vid as always, but you mentioned pre-buffs existence without critiquing it. With it, you either faceroll combat or you dont. Pre-buffing hijacks traditional rpg build identity as in Pathfinder builds are just ways to stack roll modifiers, since there is no gameplay difference. No reactions mean no gameplay, and as a result all you can do in Pathfinder, is learn Pathfinder. Video games should be more interactive than that. Infinity engine games did it well by having it all done faster, and Pillars absolutely perfected it.
