    Hey guys, we’ve talked about different truck tractors and a few different styles of trailers like the conestoga trailer. But there is a similar trailer to a conestoga that we haven’t talked about yet.
    DCP by First Gear has released a 64th Scale Peterbilt 379 pulling a Utility Tautliner trailer.
    Utility Trailer manufactures a wide range of trailers to suit your needs. The Tautliner is one of the specialty trailers they make.
    According to Utility’s website “The Tautliner loads like a flatbed and protects like a van, providing three-way simultaneous access.”
    The Tautliner is a type of specialty trailer commonly referred to as a curtainsider. So that isn’t much help either. It begs the question; what is a curtainsider?
    A curtainside trailer is a specialized semi-trailer that has a rigid framework mounted onto a flatbed trailer.
    Curtainside trailers are comprised of a firmly bolstered front bulkhead, horizontal roof supports running the trailer’s length, a metal constructed roof (similar to a dry van’s), two swing-open rear doors and a sliding tarp system. The tarps on either side of the curtainside trailer can be retracted for loading. The tarp sides can slide towards the front or towards the rear of the trailer.
    Thus, a curtainside trailer takes a flatbed trailer to the next level by not having to tarp the load. It turns an ordinary flatbed trailer into a dry van trailer with side load capability.
    It’s hard to say what the closest alternative to a curtainsider is. Is it the flatbed with tarps? Is it the common dry van? Or is it the conestoga trailer?
    Curtainsiders are not to be confused with conestogas (though they commonly are). Curtainside trailers are different in a number of ways. Most notably, curtainsides only feature tarps on two sides (the left and right). Conestogas have a larger curtain system which creates its roof & rear as well.
    Additionally, curtainside trailers feature a far more rigid framework than Conestogas do. The roof of a curtainside trailer is immobile & not retractable - the same cannot be said of Conestogas.
    Curtainside trailers can be used for any freight that requires protection from the elements during transport - provided it can be loaded from the side or back.
    Products that fit this mold include, but are not limited to, many palletized commodities, raw materials (such as lumber, steel and iron) and moisture-sensitive machinery.
    Additionally, since these trailers provide such great protection, traditional dry van commodities like food and beverage freight, general retail goods and hospitality-industry items (to name a few) are also hauled in them.
    Curtainside trailers offer better protection from the elements due to their hard top and tight seams over a tarped load on a flatbed or a conestoga trailer.
    But curtainsides are heavier than their alternatives. Due to the structure and components, curtainsiders weigh more than flatbeds, dry vans, and conestogas which can make it difficult to move high-weight loads.
    Another problem they suffer from, they can’t be loaded from the top. Like a dry van, the rigid top on a curtainsider precludes the ability to top load. So flatbeds and conestogas win here as both allow for top loads. But the curtainside still wins over the dry van as it can be side loaded while the dry van cannot.
    One other disadvantage of curtainsiders and conestogas is being specialty trailers. As specialty trailers, they are more expensive to purchase and operate than traditional dry vans or flatbeds. This leads to a shortage of them on the market to haul your goods. Thus, both types are more expensive to use over dry vans or flatbeds with tarps.
    So which type of trailer would you use to haul your goods?

    To bad the side of the trailer are not that tarp material like the original roll tarp trailers. I don't have one of these models because I don't collect the owner/operator models (I haven't seen any company trucks using this trailer)
