Mike Schmidt is the greatest 3rd Basemen to ever play the game. I am 65 years old and I watched Mike's whole career with the Phillies. The day he said he was retired he was crying and so was I. There's nobody these days that does what he does with his swing at bat. Mike didn't swing as hard as he could. I remember Mike saying to use the energy from the power in the pitchers fast ball. The pitch is coming over the plate in the upper 90s. Just swing so that the fat part of the bat hits that ball. The energy from the 95+ fast ball. Will send the ball.
Not in my book. George Brett was the best 3rd baseman I've ever seen in terms of hitting. Nearly 40 points higher BA than Schmidt. Fewer home runs but he played in KC. When he visited the Yankees he became a huge home run hitter. He was also good at fielding his position. Both are 2 of the greatest for sure.

Oh, wow! I was there that night as a nineteen year old and sitting in the outfield section where most of the HR's landed. @@humanbeing2420 Yeah, it was before the game. I remember the one HR Schmidt hit during the contest which smacked off the facing of the upper deck because it was directly over our group seating section. I was sitting too deep into the section to actually see it hit the concrete facing but I certainly heard it. I rarely ever sat in those outfield sections for games but I did that night to be part of our group. The '79 season was a weird and disappointing season for the Phillies as it marked the arrival of Pete Rose and all of the excitement and hope that his grit and experience would finally put the Phils over the top. The season started great and it hit it's peak ironically against these same Cubs when they beat the Cubbies at Wrigley in that crazy 23-22 slugfest. That win gave them an impressive 24-10 record and it appeared they were gonna run away with the division title. I seem to remember injuries took their toll and by season's end they finished a very disappointing fourth in the NL East. The Pirates won the division and the World Series.
I should add that the Phillies went on to FINALLY win a World Series title the following year ('80) when they beat the Royals in six games. Their five game NLCS series against the Astros was legendary as every game went extra innings, one game even featured a triple play, and the Phils somehow prevailed at Houston in Game 5 in a game which had everyone pulling their hair out as the game kept swinging back and forth. In '81 I was at a doubleheader at the Vet against the Mets. Kingman was on the Mets at that time and he hit a moonshot pretty far into the upper deck off of Tug McGraw. Luckily for the Phils it was just barely foul as it just missed hitting the left field foul pole. If it had stayed fair it would've rivaled Willie Stargell's mammoth blast which was marked on the concrete in the upper deck in right field. I attended quite a few games at the Vet but I had never seen anyone hit a ball so far into the upper deck as Kingman did that day. On the following pitch he hit a mile-high pop-up in the infield.

Lou Boudreau was a HOF player and player/manager for the Indians . He even managed them the 1948 WS title! He managed several teams, including the Cubs. He became the WGN Radio color man with Vince Lloyd in the 60s. Not sure why he was doing the play-by-play for this when Jack Brickhouse, the WGN TV p-b-p guys was there. Always thought Boudreau was dry but extremely knowledgeable. His excitement on that first HR was as excited as I ever heard him get, lol!
I was a 70's kid & these guys were among my favorite players. Mike lived up to his potential as a consistent HR hitter but if Dave could have been able to keep in the same batting average range as Mike we would have seen most years HR totals in the 40/50 range for sure. And there were several years he missed a fair amount of games where he was on pace for 30/40 + seasons. Because of his HR's he had HOF potential but fell short. Still love the guy though.
How was this organized with the season still going on in September of '79? Can you imagine it's Sep. of 2024....and all of a sudden they announce Judge & Shoei will be having a HR derby?
I once extrapolated what Mike Schmidt would’ve done as a Cub. The HR number would’ve been in the 640s. Probably higher because his knees had been better on grass. But like he said, “Wrigley with the wind blowing out.” Michael Jack’s last season (‘89), he hit 2 in the first 3 games @ Wrigley (wind aided) He retired in SF at the Memorial Day weekend.
I remember as a kid Schmidt ALWAYS Crushed HR's at Wrigley, 1979-1984. Three-game series, wind blowing in or out, he was a virtual LOCK to hit at least two.
That's Lou Boudreau. In case you don't know, he's in the Hall of Fame. You can make fun of his diction, but you can only wish you were half the ball player he was. In 1948, Boudreau won AL MVP by hitting .348 18 HR 106 RBI 98 Walks and only 9 strikeouts. That's right... NINE SO! He led the Indians to the 1948 World Series title. And oh by the way, he was also the manager of the Indians at the same time he was playing shortstop. Yes, Boudreau was player-manager for 9 seasons with Cleveland from 1942-1950. He was player-manager from the ages of 24 to 32. Who cares if he pronounced his name funny? Why don't you focus on the greatness of these players instead of being so nitpicky & negative.

Mike talking Schmidt there at the beginning lol. Hes suggesting Kingman had help hitting all those homers with the wind at Wrigley and has an "easy" pitcher throwing to him today! 😂
The hardest hit ball, in terms of 'exit speed' that went for a home run that I ever saw was when Kingman ripped one over the left field stands in '76 when he played for the Mets vs. the Phils at Veterans Stadium.

Dave Kingman was a huge star in Chicago!Too bad all bad blood between the Cubs and Kingman that ended his Cubs days and he did not get his number r retired .
It was before a Phils Cubs game on (Saturday Evening/Night) Sept 15th in Phila. Most likely the ideal for a contest between Kingman / Schmidt was conceived after the Phils/Cubs game that same year in May where the Phils beat the cubs 23/22 AND Kingman and schmidt had 3Hr/2Hr in that game Kingman had 6RBI and Schmidt4.
Yes, since the real shootout happened at Wrigley in May of that year. My guess is this was the brainchild of the Phils front office. At that time they came up with a lot of Fun pregame acts for the fans to watch.

The hardest hit ball, in terms of 'exit speed' that went for a home run that I ever saw was when Kingman ripped one over the left field stands in '76 when he played for the Mets vs. the Phils at Veterans Stadium.
Schmidt’s retirement announcement press conference was great.
Miss those days
Never seen this before!
America use to be so amazing!!!
Mikes double take at the mispronunciation of his name is hilarious lol 😂 0:57
Mike Smit. (WTF Lou!) 😤
Having to watch all those commercials is like watching UA-cam. ....oh wait....😐
First time I ever heard Dave Kingman speak....
Mike Smit? Really?
And those Cub road uniforms were Sweet!
Were there any other home run shootout contests that aired on channel 9 or just this one?
This seems to have been a byproduct of that massive slugfest in May where the Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22.
$ Donation IN! I will always vote with my wallet when you give us Sox and MLB content. Classis KONG! vs Schmidty! Never knew this was broadcast. WGN has some great vaults! More please.... WSNS ch 44 too!
Those who taped such moments as aired on WGN and kept them lo these many years have "great vaults."
they go uppy up up
Dave Kingman was a huge star in Chicago!Too bad all bad blood between the Cubs and Kingman that ended his Cubs days and he did not get his number r retired .
Mike Schmidt always f-ed us!! LOL
As a Phils fan from the 70's Your comment IS FUNNY!
Is this a all star hr contest? If so they need to bring this format back
It was before a Phils Cubs game on (Saturday Evening/Night) Sept 15th in Phila.
Yeah haha my God the guys's name is SHHH - MIT!! Not Smitt. Even Schmidt was laughing about how he was murdering his name.
Was “Smit” also inducted into the Hall?
Mike Smith was as big in baseball as Michael Jorbin in basketball, Tom Blakey in football, and Wayne Grepsby in hockey.
This was a sponsored event like someone said just broad casted in CHICAGO A REGULAR SEASON GAME NOT THE ALL STAR GAME
This really should've been done at Wrigley
Yes, since the real shootout happened at Wrigley in May of that year. My guess is this was the brainchild of the Phils front office. At that time they came up with a lot of Fun pregame acts for the fans to watch.
Why don't I remember this? This is obviously 1979 when Kingman said both teams were not in the pennant race. And was this before a game? And the man's name is Schmidt not Smit.
Kingman would have been a great DH
Good ole "Smitty". 😂😂😂
I need me a Danley's Garages or Victory Auto Wreckers commercial.
Looks like Boone is catching for Wine. Who is the Cubs catcher?
That’s not Boone, that was Dave Rader catching for Wine. Boone was much taller and wore #8.
@@PeopleRTellingmeok. I stand corrected. At first glance I thought it was Boone because the catcher's gear looked like Boone's
@@frankpalancio8471 if you rewatch clip of schmidt's first homer at 6;26 youll see RADER#6 on back of his uniform when he pat's Schmidt. Also Boone always wore the Helmet when catching. Rader is oldschool ball cap turned backwards.
Amalfitano had a higher lifetime batting average than Kingman .244 vs. .236, and fewer homers and k's.
Lou was around a long time and for him to screw up Schmidt is surprising.
why couldn't the cameramen follow the ball back then?
What was the exact date this took place?
Read the video title and/or video description.
15 September 1979
Thanks to both responses. I totally missed that!
@@Classicrocker6119 - It even mentions the time this aired!
That shopping cart half full of balls😂😂
Mike Schmidt in 1979 was an Established Top Player in the NL. Every NL Baseball Fan knew MIKE SCHMIDT. No reason Lou Boudreau should call him SMIT-SMITH. Mike should have had some fun with Lou over it. If this had been shown if Phila Area, PHILS FANS would have written and called Lou Boudreau about 200000 letters and called TELLING HIM ITS SCHMIDT not Smith LOL
Best call? "Kingman will lead off the 5th" who's batting next, Santo?
man, they really wanted you to fly on planes back then. lol
Why does the announcer keep saying Smit and Schmidt?
Who is here today in 2024 after listening to Schmidt tell the story while the As crush the Phillies?
Yes! Except Mike thought he lost to Kingman!
