Thanks for the tips. I just built mine yesterday and I'm not really happy with the low end. I'll try this power supply resistor change to see if that helps.

I live modding these, more voltage in, lower the gain. 500k log gain pot and even jumper the inline resistor. It's great for a tiny bit of bite. Very amp like.

awesome review... that pesky 1Kohm power input resistor connected to the 9V dc rail does indeed take a bit off the low end and perhaps other higher low mid range frequencies.
upon your suggestion of 100 ohm value, i messed around with an adjustable in parallel with the 1Kohm resistor going from 0 ohm (full 9volt dc) to 500 ohm... i noticed that around 100 ohm there is more beef in the overall signal and even more with the resistor completely bypassed...(0 ohms).
since i am using a one spot 9 v dc power supply correctly pinned, with the center pin negative, and not using a battery or other potentially reversed polarity power supply, i opted to feed the circuit with the full 9volts.
i opted to omit the diode and the 1K ohm resistor; bottom line is the pedal has a cleaner more refined low end push (not much more but noticeable).
the ic can actually handle up to 18 volts dc. my guess is that in the 1970's, using a 1k ohm was originally designed to save the battery life.
thanks again for all the work and description/examples of circuit tweaks.
