January 19, 2021: Cathedral Bell Tolling for 400,000 COVID Deaths

- Опубліковано 18 січ 2021
- On Jan. 19, 2021, as our nation marks 400,000 lives lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington National Cathedral tolled its mourning bell 400 times -- once for every 1,000 dead.
We toll this 12-ton bell for every funeral held at the Cathedral. Funerals mourn the loss, but they also celebrate the lives of our loved ones, and point us to the hope of resurrection.
This gesture cannot replace the lives lost, but we hope it will help each American mourn the toll of this pandemic.
The paper doves displayed are part of the Les Colombes installation in the Cathedral's nave by German artist Michael Pendry. The doves embody our resolve to be kind to our fellow human, and to do our part in making a better tomorrow. Learn more at cathedral.org/doves

I am sorry for such great loss 🙏🏻.
So very sorry for your loss 😭😢
We grieve with you and your family.
For those who are alone in the hospitals and long term care facilities, fighting this disease. God, comfort those who are alone.
My thoughts have often been with those who are scared and alone throughout all this. Thanks for your comment.

@spirals 73 And yet, we, as a nation are bound together in a common yearning for those lost forever. Do not forget that the 'kindness of strangers' can be a bright spot in a person's day.
For my beloved daughter Deanna Marie Rodi Quaranta and all of the loved 400,000 souls. I thank you.
So sorry for your loss 😭😢💔
My sympathy to you and your family.
This is the start of the national healing we need from this devastating pandemic.
Cathedrals have traditionally stood in the center of the political and social events of a town or city. This cathedral has certainly lived up to this tradition. Thank you
So, is it open for worship ?
Thank you National Cathedral for honoring the devastating loss of life to Covid-19 in such an incredibly powerful and moving way. The nation mourns together.

The haunting sounds of the bells and the images of the doves are a fitting tribute to those we lost. Prayers of peace and comfort for all who have lost loved ones.
Thank you for being gentle with our broken and frightened hearts.
What all of us needed now. Grateful eternally
For my friend Dan Paul. May his memory be eternal.
We grieve with you and Dan's family and friends.
For the grandmother of our family friends, for our co-workers at work, for my peers in healthcare, all of whom passed away from this disease here in the Los Angeles area. For my first cousin, once removed, who had a heart attack; for my uncle, who had lung problems; for my great aunt; all of whom died due to the lack of resources in the health care facilities due to the pandemic. May God grant you all eternal rest to your souls and may all your memories be eternal! May the Almighty help all of us affected by this pandemic.

"Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted" Matt 5:4 KJV 🙏❤
MrMojo, the KJV has a power and resonance that none other can begin to aspire to. Some time, read the histories of the devout and self-sacrificing translators who gave their all to bring us the eternal words in powerful English.
Prayers of comfort and peace for the loved ones. Thank you National Cathedral for honoring humanity.
Thank you for Leland Waugh
We grieve with you and Leland's family and friends.
To, and for, all those who have been lost, and for those who loved them...

Every human being is precious. Our lord said that the falling of a sparrow is noted in the Creator's eyes. May you and the family find solace and strength in your loss.
Thank you for this moving memorial and tribute to the lives of those lost. I don’t often sit still and listen these days but this has stopped me in my tracks. The tones of the bell reverberate through body and mind and are somehow healing.
Prayers for Thelma Christie-Greene, my beloved aunt.
My condolences to you and your family.
Sorry for your loss.
For those we lost.
Into paradise may
the angels lead you.
At your coming may
the martyrs receive you,
and bring you into
the holy city Jerusalem.
May the choirs of angels
welcome you,
and with Lazarus
who once was poor
may you have peace everlasting.
-- The Book of Common Prayer
Thank you 🙏
God Bless all the families who have lost loved ones. Thank you for being a beacon, WNCathedral.
Eternal Father, rest their souls and let them rise in glory.
Love and peace to all who grieve.
Prayers of love, prayers of peace.
Love is the only thing that will save us 🙏
My sympathies to all who have lost someone. This soaring sculpture within the National Cathedral and the bells' tolling is a worthy tribute to those who are no longer here with us.
God and Lord of all, save us from ourselves and from this pandemic. Receive all who have died and comfort their loved ones throughout the world.
Back in the 1960s, I heard and/or participated in many musical masterpieces at this Cathedral, from the B minor Mass on, and I think this is more moving than all those put together. My heart and my soul are now more than ever wedded to this great church.
May God bless His children around the world with His light and healing power Amen
Lord JesusChrist, Son of God Most High, have mercy on us sinners and forgive us...
God please bless America and give us strength. Amen
For Stefan Djokić, age 26
May God’s light eternal shine upon Stefan 😢🙏
My sympathy to you and Stefan's family and friends.
His 35 year old brother died on July 1st, he on July 11th. Elderly father got it, but recovered. This virus should not be underestimated - it's capricious and cruel and deadly
Sorry for your losses
@@popovicsanja Precious souls, loved people, each one unique to the universe and to the Creator. May you gain strength to face the days ahead.
Eternal Rest Grant unto them All. Thank you.
For our godfather, Don Childress. He was a kind, caring, loving, sincere man with a wicked sense of humor! He missed his wife Sheila so much that he decided to go be with her when fighting this terrible virus was just too much for his body to bear. We understand, Donnie and we love you! And our hearts have some measure of peace knowing that you're with mom again and neither of you have to miss each other anymore.
We are all so sorry for your loss.
Imo Diana Kirkpatrick
My condolences for your loss and to Diana's family and friends.
tolling for the tender hands, hearts and minds who have touched all of the ill, dying, and now dead - binding up our grief, releasing in the sound of each toll the lives lost, suffering now and the strength of health care workers to endure as we mask, social distance, vaccinate and grieve in days, weeks, months and years to come. God have mercy, Christ have mercy.
In loving memory of all those who died of COVID19.
Amen and amen forever.
I send a prayer for each life lived and each life lost.
Thank you for this.
Thank you.
For Wilton "Bud" Mitchell.
My sympathy to you and to Bud's family and friends.
So sorry for your loss.
@@CindersVale thank you
May the souls of all the departed rest in peace. May God strengthen and comfort the families and all those who care for and minister to them, including our clergy.
the bells toll for all of us and the lost
Who disliked? Really?
Yeah I know 😢..you have some heartless humans..
Some are heartless and without empathy or compassion. Ignore them since they are without souls.
I chose to believe it was people showing their displeasure that so many have been lost that each bell had to be for 1,000 lost.
😔💔
🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊.....
Rest in Love
The haunting, beautiful and powerful sound of great tragedy and great change.
😢😭💔. For my Father, Gus Wilson, Jr., beloved father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, member of the Greatest Generation, World War 2 United States Navy veteran, on December 20, 2020 from COVID19.
We grieve with you and your family.
Sorry for your loss.
Though I don’t believe in God, the rings of the Catholic Church bells will always make me fear in what those ringings are for. I will say that when this pandemic is over we should have a memorial for those we lost, and to the hard working frontline workers and give love to the grieving families. May this pandemic stop tearing our loved ones away from us, and in this time we do not need hate or selfish people to fuel the fire and the pain. May everyone who sees this be well.
Thank you-it’s an Episcopal Cathedral though -and there is a memorial that is there on the reflecting pool.
This is not a Catholic Church. It is Episcopal
It’s a lovely sound
For my Godfather, Albert Hilber
Sorry for your loss.
For my Uncle Richie Rozay who died from Covid last night February 3rd. Away from his kids and newborn child 🙏🏾💔
For my sister Bona Condon
People need to wake up and stop traveling during these unprecedented times! Hearing so many deaths go up every day!!!
And a little over a month later we've hit 500k dead.
Will you guys be ringing the bell again??
Will there be a statue added to the garden to remember those that we lost? I think of the sad lion in lucerne.
Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine.
For an extraordinary Facebook friend who I never got to meet in person, Kernit E. Grimshaw.
All the words of Jesus are eternal and infallible truth. God is the Father of all lawful desires. Marriage belongs to the Father. No one steals from God.
😍
☹︎☹︎ I dont like covid.
NOW: may the peace of God, which surpasseth ALL POSSIBLE HUMAN UNDERSTANDING, keep your hearts and guard your minds in the knowledge and in the love of God Almighty; and of His Son, Jesus Christ; and the blessing of God the Father; and of the Son; and of the Holy Spirit, be amongst you, and remain with you always.
AND REMAIN WITH YOU ALWAYS. Amen.
Has this rung for price Phillip
I probably encountered COVID-19 before 2020
My grandpa died
😪😪😪😪😪😪😪
I am so sorry for you all who lost loved ones, but I cannot be too angry to your future former president who enabled this horrible thing to happen.
i don't think people just realize how many lives and aspects of daily life were affected per bell ring... May cosmic blessings grace your days, always
Thank you for this beautiful tribute.
