I’m sorry you didn’t pay attention in 2nd grade English class, but don’t make that everyone else’s problem. It literally doesn’t affect the game, outside of there being less programming to include specific pronoun usage via player-chosen-gender.
I figure that it would probably be easier to implement the gender binary choice in all localizations of the game and only change the language used, so they kept it in the English version as "style" rather than completely remove a part of character customization, even though all language in the English version is gender-neutral. I did spend a few minutes changing my appearance in the mirror trying to find any difference at all between the "style" setting options, and there really is none. As a nonbinary person, I usually just pick whichever one I think looks better in the character creation menu, but there is legitimately no difference between the "boy" and the "girl" setting in NH, and I find that really refreshing, even though I still technically have to choose a "gender." I've noticed, too, that there seems to be almost no gendered language whatsoever in the game. When commenting on your outfit, no matter how feminine or masculine it is, they don't say that it looks "cute" or... "burly," at least, not in a way that I've taken notice. They just comment that that article of clothing looks really good on you, here's something they think will go great with it. I also don't understand why some people would make such a big deal out of it. It changes legitimately nothing about the gameplay, but god forbid they even have the *option* to put long hair and a dress on a boy, because *obviously,* if the option is there at *all,* that means they're being *forced* to put their male characters in dresses by the evil gays. It's like gender customization in the Sims all over again. The Sims 4 added a tiny little dropdown menu where you could customize your Sims' gender and clothing preferences, you have to click on the dots to even make the menu come up, and all these people threw a fit that these gender options were being "forced down their throats." And TS4 still doesn't completely erase the barrier between the binary genders the way AC:NH does; all Sims are cisgender and conform to their gender by default (save for a small handful of premades), and you, the player, have to go change the settings to make them transgender or gender non-conforming. And people still acted like they, outside of the game, were being forced to wear drag at gunpoint.
I never knew wild world worked like that...also I'm surprised you didn't mention how strange it is to call boys "burly" in a game for all ages, made primarily for children, ESPECIALLY when the japanese text used "cool" which, while still being a stereotype that girls can't be cool, is something someone would actually say about their name (nobody calls their name "burly" wtf) and makes more sense for children...like it's not even an americanism it's just weird

The "style" of your character only effects the nicknames that your villagers give you. (My lazy villagers refer to me as man when my style is male, but don't refer to me that way when it's female.) I think it also affects the first clothes you get, and that's about it. I played around with it after resetting my island, and when your feminine you get a gingham/plaid shirt (long sleeved in winter and spring), and masculine usually gets one of the Nook Inc. t-shirts.
Papi is FtM transgender Okapis. Julia is MtF transgender Peacocks. Branca and Pavé are Genderqueer? Gracie is English version is former MtF transgender, Japanese version is Genderqueer, dead-name is “Nabenosuke”. But ACNH’s Gracie’s body sex is Female. So may be a trans-sexual now.
10:20 not sure if those exemples are supposed to show that the characters are refering to the player as boy or girl or if it just shows that french is a gendered language (either way it's true !) but in those screenshots the villagers are not talking about the player :)

Yeah, same. But i think it is kinda necessery in languages with no gender neutral pronouns. But at least the game just asks for "your style" (your prounouns/ how you wanna be adressed (at least in the german version)). But it still sucks for people who neither use she/her nor he/him pronouns :/

I’m honestly glad this is more an inclusive community. The fact that people are getting mad about this is surprising, I mean it’s a game about escapism, and relaxing.

As a trans man,Growing up I played the og animal crossing on game cube. Very simple. Always picked the guy.m avatar. Never felt uncomfortable Or anything and my conservative family who all had characters in the game didn’t even care. I used fake names tho. We all did. Fun times, happy memories. I love the new game too
hi! super late but the description of wild world's customization options kinda took me back to new leaf... where it was pretty much the same. I remember getting super frustrated because when you don't play the game a long time your hair will be ruffled and there is.... no way to change that other than paying for a haircut as from what i remember. as a trans person, im glad ACNH included this! not only great for more self-expressive avatars but also for more creativity and choice
To be fair in wild world the space was very limited and it was designed to almost be like a co-life rather than I direct simulation because in real life you can't necessarily choose what you look like and I believe that's what the developers were going for. But a customisation menu was considered but wild world already had many of the events removed because of space constraints so many of the choices on that topic were made with efficiently and bare minimum end user statistfaction because the user will probably still play the game even if it does not look like them. In some cases it's less about opinion and more about constraints.
It also made more sense to Nintendo to not include stuff like cross-dressing because Muslim countries and Russia would possibly ban the game from sale and at the time they wouldn't loose as much of a market share if they just appealed to the majority.
The only complaint is the lack of pronoun options. I don't really mind being called they/them, but as a trans fellow, he/him would feel a bit better. Although asking for pronouns could potentially enrage anti-"woke" people, but honestly I feel like if they give you the "style" options that don't actually effect much in the game then they should just be for pronouns. Honestly I don't even think it'd take to much effort to change that, just add a gender neutral villager face button in the middle of the male and female ones on the style screen.
