Animating Robots Instead of Programming Them | andyRobot + KUKA

  • KUKA partner andyRobot (AKA Andy Flessas) has developed a plug-in for industry leading animation software, Autodesk Maya, that allows KUKA robots to be programmed by anyone who knows how to animate inside Maya. Simply by dragging the 3D model of the robot through space in the virtual world and setting keyframes, a robot program can be created.
    Called Robot Animator, andyRobot's Maya plug-in is aimed squarely at creative professionals, but could also find use in other less creative robot programming endeavors. The technology is enabled by KUKA's EntertainTech, a piece of hardware and software that allows for the robot animation to be turned into a robot program and drive the robot.
    Follow along as Andy demonstrates how Robot Animator works and discusses the future of robots in entertainment endeavors.

    I had the idea yesterday to use robots in the filming process and I thought someone else definitely thought of this before and today I find this video while I was looking for something completely different.

    isn't this already a thing? with Modeling and Joint Mapping? Animation Timelines? well i guess its like a supercharged version of Pivot Animator
    i guess that would kinda streamline prototypes if you could build a 3D model then map the joints and animate it with simple animation timelines like how you would on Pivot Animator, tho i guess you would still need a basic level of code knowledge in order to write all the animations together into a working program that the robot can execute on something like a loop or on user input but that's just basic assembly line crap, tho if it was paired with a realistic environment simulator i can start to see the beneficial uses it could have

    Human arms have 7 degrees of freedom, not 6, the missing one being an additional degree at the base (shoulder). Also humans don't roll the hand independent of the lower arm (unlike this robot arm).
