This game got a sequel on the Nintendo DS, named 影之伝説 in Japan but everywhere else named "Legend of Kage 2". In this game, there are two paths to choose. You can either go with Kage from the previous game or with an Iga kunoichi (female ninja) named Chihiro. If you want to get a "better ending", play as Chihiro. Her ending will surprise you.

In the arcade version you could actually play the game during one of the demo levels that played on a loop. I remember the older kids at the pool I played thought I was stupid and pretending to play.
I didn't have a clue what this game wanted me to do when I played it as a kid. The wall part there is an arrow indicator saying "hey dummy you need to go up" but why isn't there one in the other areas? I seriously doubt I was alone. I saw other people play the game and they also didn't know how to get out of that first forest area or that it was possible and there was more to the game.
Feels so wrong that you mostly scroll to the left instead of right. Still as this was if not the first real action / platform game there was not any set rules yet. Indeed almost all space shooters scrolled right so maybe in that they wanted to differentiate themselves?

Same here, I thought it was NES only. I was at at least 3 different arcades constantly as a kid in the 80's and never saw this game.
Amazing the princess can withstand that fall of tens of feet off the top of the castle multiple times.😅

I remember seeing the NES box at the back had screenshots of the arcade instead of the NES gameplay. Was a bit disappointed as a kid.

ファミコン移植は手抜きが多かった。
37~8年前近所の駄菓子屋の中に設置されてて1プレイ50円でやり込んだ記憶がある。当時はテーブル型に画面が埋め込まれて下を覗き込む様な感じだったから操作しづらかった。
