October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta

I filmed some of the damage at my house (non-structural) in San Jose and then filmed many hours of the news updates. I was 15 years old at the time and a little excited to film all the "damage". We were lucky compared to many in the Bay Area.

The Loma Prieta was the biggest shaker I was ever in. Thanks for sharing this. Its nice to see Anna Chavez again. She was a really nice lady and great news caster.

Interestingly to me is the fact that they’re pointing with pencils the areas on a I’m not sure exactly what kind of picture graph of the city that is but pointing with pencils as compared to 2022 where we would have graphics and beyond belief.

I was in 2nd grade when that happened. It was about a month after Hurricane Hugo hit SC.

I remember that earthquake! I was 9 when it happened and that was the first time I can remember seeing something about an earthquake on TV that I hadn't felt myself. Before, we had turned on the TV to hear about the earthquake because we had felt it. This time, we had the TV on because we were going to watch the World Series and we were actually watching live when the TV cut out and Al Michaels said that they were having an earthquake.

What part of San Jose were you in? My Aunts were at Candlestick waiting to watch the game. It took them 5-6 hours to get back home to San Jose.
