    Thank you Helen for this lovely tutorial with inktense pencils! Very helpful demonstration of what to do to get good colours. For example, at 6:36: the two pencil marks blended with water, giving us a deep golden browny colour… to me was a great tip! 😀I love your style of teaching, and hearing you “smile” when you are narrating. I know I will be smiling throughout my own painting time following this video!

    A hint in case you don’t know yet: Caran D’Arche textured acrylic palette! I also use it for my colored Chinese ink sticks instead of my usual grinding dish (I had 3 grinding dishes, but gave 2 away. I use my antique dish my first tutor sent me from China for black ink sticks only). That acrylic palette has been so helpful, I now have 2 of them! 😁

      @@helencampbell I got mine on Amazon, but I’ll check Jackson’s . Just fyi, I also combine some of the colors right on the palette…like I said, I like it so much I got 2 😂. My daughter is using it for her regular watercolor pencils…although I think I got her addicted to inktense. My traditional Chinese chips are also permanent. When my daughter and best friend got me into learning western style..I was shocked at some of the differences…mainly with paper, of course, but also with paint. I’ve also given up on all Western brushes except the quill brushes my tutor sent me from Germany. I think it’s just that in 8 years I became accustomed to and comfortable with my Chinese brushes. Several have deep sentimental meaning as my late son stayed with and assisted a traditional brush maker in China.
      Anyways, let me go check and find the proper name for you!

      @@helencampbell I’m so sorry..I replied and it disappeared. I couldn’t find it on Jackson’s . Its called Caran D'ache Palette Aquarelle. It measures 10.43 x 5.12 x 0.16 inches and has a rough textured side and a smooth side. My best friend bought a couple for her water-soluble oil and chalk pastels; says they’ve been a game changer for her too. It gave me an idea…I can’t afford a 3D printer, but imagine something like my ink stone I gave away-about 3 in x 6 in, made of resin or acrylic instead of stone, 1/2in sides with the middle part slanted downwards and the rough texture on the top part. 😂. Me and my imagination…my best friend says I’ve turned into a mad scientist in my old age with my experiments with different paints & single pigments, plus traditional Chinese binders and mediums; TRYING to find good alternatives to traditional Chinese paints-which have gone down so far in quality the past few years as these 200-400yr old companies focus more on expanding into western paints; there’s somewhat of an uprising both in China and other Asian countries among traditional painters and professors. Some have switched almost completely to Western paints. The problem is finding Western paints that A. Don’t destroy the very thin and delicate Xuan paper and B. That can stand up to traditional wet-mounting (eg: on silk scrolls). After my precious son passed away a little over a year ago, we decided to find ways to try and bring the techniques and materials together and introduce more westerners to the 2000yr history of traditional chinese painting and calligraphy. My sons entire life was all about traveling and learning and teaching people about different cultures. We wanted to carry on his legacy in ways we are able to..my best friend a 69yr old retired art professor who has taught around the world; my eldest, a singer, songwriter, graphic artist and painter…and me, a disabled former doctor and researcher (AKA “mad scientist”.. except with viruses and bacteria instead of pigments and mediums)…who is legally blind and loaded/blessed? With other major health issues. We’re quite the trio! 😂. Speaking of…Liz (friend) is texting me asking if I’ve started my very complicated and detailed Gongbi style (a very detailed Chinese painting done on extremely thin, sized Xuan paper) painting of a Tiger handing over 2023 to a bowing rabbit. I’m going to attempt all but the background “wash” with inktense. That’s how I found your videos. If you don’t know it, the technique of adding a small amount of color than drawing it out and layering- is exactly the technique we use in Gongbi painting. The problem has been using these western materials on my “cicada wing” paper. It’s MUCH more difficult..even impossible on some raw (unsized) or semi-sized papers to draw out the color. It sits where you put it, and that’s it. You can’t use masking, wet-on-wet is impossible as is trying to lift color. Even just a micro-dot of too much ink, paint or water can turn into a Rorschach ink blot. It becomes, as my wonderful tutor explains; “part of the energy of the painting”….OR you just ball it up and play soccer with your kitty who is obsessed with the TCM herbs they add to Chinese ink. Time for a nap so I can work on the painting tonight with Fiona, my wonderful tutor. Like myself, she still has a lot of paint produced before the quality went down so badly. HOWEVER, we’re determined to find alternatives for students (she’s Chinese but teaches in Brussels) and artists who can’t find quality paints. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      @@helencampbell Oh if I had a FB account I’d show you and you’d cringe lol I think next time I’m going to try a glazing technique instead of trying to mix each color and blend it all together. That’s my weak point because I end up overworking things trying to get a nice blend. However if I see orange in say, a petal, and it’s mostly pink maybe I’ll just do a yellow undertone and the pink will turn orange when I glaze over. I’ll try the flower again someday. It sucks I’m SO confident in freehand sketching out the flowers but whenever I add color I feel like I ruin it and wish I had just left it a sketch.

      Yea lol I’m used to (or was used to) acrylic paint. Painted with it years ago and stopped suddenly. Watercolor is definitely different but I think it’s more forgiving. You can’t really go back and fix things on acrylic. You can reactivate the watercolor…but sometimes…it ends up a muddy mess of disappointment lol

    thank you for the best video on how to use inktense pencils! I have the entire set and have struggled with getting light colors! Thank you Helen!!

    I already have watercolour pencils and watrecolours, are Inktense that much different? I'm wondering whether to buy some.
    When you make your little paper palette, can you reactivate the puddles again and again or is it permanent once dried?
    Are Intense pencils easier to control for fine details than watercolours?

    • @helencampbell
      @helencampbell  Рік тому

      Hi. Inktense are quite different to other watercolour pencils because they are ink and therefore more vibrant.
      Once you reactivate the little paper pallet, you can’t reactivate it again because once wet and then dry it becomes permanent. You will need to do the little squiggle again to reactivate the paint to pick it up. If that makes sense - and they are certainly easier to control for finer details than water colour because it’s entirely up to you, how much you apply and it doesn’t lift off in the way that watercolour does
