- During our stay at Balule Camp, Kruger National Park, Oct 2018, we were blessed with a rare glimpse into the loving and tender welcome to a newborn calf by the herd, and managed to video the miraculous first 3 hours of the little bull’s life as he learnt to stand, wobble, walk and flap his ears under the gentle and protective guidance of his Mum and family.
That morning, the herd were ambling around the camp, and at urgent trumpeting and calls from the herd, we rushed to the fence, to find the little miracle having just been born. He must have arrived suddenly, as there was no other sign in the behaviour of the herd that a birth was expected. They were walking past the camp.
We hope the video does convey the tremendous affection, protectiveness, encouragement and patience offered to the little one during this period. It was a once in a lifetime experience, as elephant births are not often witnessed; we were left filled with sentiment and wonder at the miracle of birth and of new life.
There is no sound, as the entire time after the birth was quiet. Only the females, and one young bull, that attended to the calf, were allowed close to the birthing area, the rest of the herd remained some metres off and watch from there.
We videoed from inside the camp. The video is 15 minutes long. Sound is not included because of the quiet discussions of others watching the event being caught on camera.

Elephants are very emotional creatures. They truly love each other and little calves are treated with great tenderness and protection! The addition of a new calf is heralded with much trumpeting and each member will touch their trunk to greet the new baby. This also allows them to get the scent of the calf. The herd will surround babies, putting them in the center of the herd if danger is detected. They rarely punish a baby's antics; they're treated with kind forbearance if they misbehave. They teach by modeling correct elephant behavior and norms. This was a beautiful glimpse into the first hours of the newest member of this elephant herd. This newborn elephant is taught to balance, to stay up and to walk all within a few short hours. When he discovered his ears and started to flap them, that was so cute. An amazing video, thank you for sharing!
He's so cute! So amazing how they're all helping and protecting him. I wish we could hear them.
Couple of things I really love about this - about 10:00, how the elephants surround the baby and all face outwards as if watching for threats. At 11:30, how quickly the mother turns around when he falls over and then she fusses over him. I swear, elephants are better parents than some people.
Elephant families are in many ways stronger than human families. If the offspring is female, it will remain with the mother for life.
So cute, trying to get the hang of his wobbly legs. I just love the Mom and aunts using their trunks to help the baby stand up.💓😍

Oh my gosh, so beautiful. Elephants are the best. It's a hard introduction to life being pushed around no matter how gently. His mom, aunties, and cousins all know he's at hsi most vulnerable at birth. He needs to stand up and move! Just lovely to witness. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful event with all of us.

Imagine what it’s like to be a baby elephant. First you are dropped on your head. Then you have a bunch of giants kicking you around and throwing dirt at you.
Praying this beautiful little bull is ok and thriving. The herd was so protective and supportive of him trying to stand and move around. I hope someone will give us an update about him.

Wow thankyou for sharing this awsome video, it makes you feel humble when you see a complete family herd jsut work together for just one soul, and a male which is the life blood, but only stays with the herd until around ten to twelve years then pushed out to go their own seperate lives usualy a group form a batchelor herd with at least one elder who keeps them in check and teache's them how to behave and find mate's etc.

When he fell, she turned so fast to get him up. First day, I couldn’t get my son to suckle, yet this baby is walking with the herd. So amazing.

It's amazing to see how protective they are, at the 10 minute mark of this video you see how they all keep the little one between them, never leaving a space for a predator to take advantage. Just wondering, right in the beginning, where they showed the little one where his mouth is, were they (or the mother) giving him some milk or just showing him how to reach his mouth with his trunk? Thank you for sharing this wonderful video.

The adults are showing stress from the human scrutiny. It’s sad that a filming opportunity blinded some from the reality of the situation.
I agree seeing something like this is special,.. but Distance should have been observed.
The use of powerful cameras and/or video scopes, would have worked without causing stress. I pray the calf is ok and finally was able to feed🙏💞
Mara Black they were guarding the baby yes, but when it was trying to stand & get its bearings, they kept pushing it & one kicked it. The trainers all say the baby needs to feed right away. That was a piss poor mother that didn't try to feed it the whole time. I doubt that baby survived. It looked very underweight.

Three hours is what was observed, not filmed and uploaded. There are hours of footage unseen, my guess would be the very respect you both refuse to give those filming is the respect they gave those elephants.
If the herd were that weary of humans and human exposure I’m sure they would have never allowed their herd to tread the course they chose with a pregnant and due female in the group.
And my God, the response to this comment is disgusting.
If you choose to be ignorant and assume your all knowing of every species- regardless of actually knowing anything- then how about you just stay away from them all together? Them as in the other species that you have the audacity to judge and make assumptions of when you clearly know nothing of what you speak.

I’m an advocate for acceptance of all creatures- including humans. Too often the trend I find on these threads involves bashing humans and demeaning our own kind as a way of proving how much we love animals. It’s ridiculous and in no way helpful or positive for anything or anyone.
That said, it is ridiculously obnoxious and arrogant comments like yours that make me understand a little bit more why some people feel the way they do regarding our own kind. Why would you make such statements when you don’t have any education or experience in studying the behavior of this species ? Why would you accuse the mother of disregarding her baby and trying to hurt her baby when there’s absolutely no evidence of any such thing and the only way you could possibly make that conclusion would have to be because you voluntarily guessed and assumed and exaggerated behaviors and actions you thought you saw.
That’s so unnecessary.
