  • Pokemon Competitive Singles has been turned on it's head with the release of the "Indigo Disk" DLC. Archaludon and it's powerful new signature move Electro Shot have led to an enormous rise in Rain teams.
    Archaludon Rain has been one of the most popular and successful archetypes in Smogon Premier League, leading to this Suspect test for Archaludon.
    Is this Bridge-Themed Fellow too powerful? Or are we overreacting? Let's discover the truth.

    Some will never figure out how to get Archaludon in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Archaludon Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Archaludon Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
    Arceus exists.
    The below text is very relevant to many people.
    Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
    Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
    Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
    Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on UA-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

    Electro Shot feels like a combination of Solar Beam and Meteor Beam, but weirdly it's given more base power than either of those moves. If it only was the rain equivalent of Solar Beam it'd be a much more fair move but then I suppose it's just a slightly stronger Thunder but it's always felt like Rain is superior to Sun as is - you get 100% accurate Thunder _and_ Hurricane, the Pokemon who get a speed doubling effect are almost always Water-type rather than a type which is weak to the power-boosted Water moves under rain, and Hydration is a superior ability to Leaf Guard.

    it is the year 2039, the gen 9 OU has been ravaged, the third impact from the council at smogon has banned every pokemon in the national dex, except for 2 sitting on the shore of a desolate battlefield. As the colossal corpse of Great tusk lay dead in the bloody water; its defining tusks lay shattered, pieces of ivory were lying in the mud and rubble as its lifeless head rolled to the side looking straight back at the shore like a mannaquin where Gholdengo and Kingambit sat down on the shore, their mission finally over, to be the last ones standing before the end of everything.
    But at what cost? The 2 of them didn't have smiles of confidence on their face. Gholdengo lay down in his pile of stealth rocks and spikes and looked over to Kingambit who was forcing an ant into making a 50/50, his supreme overlord ability made him the strongest being that would ever live but no one would witness it, Gholdengo whispered in a husky dry rasp "How disgusting" before proceeding to make it rain all over the parched ground where no one would see it.

    i think people underestimate how much archaludon is slowed down by other weather. archaludon pretty much always wants to click electro shot when it comes in, but if you have ninetales or torkoal or ttar you can pretty much switch for free. ninetales and ttar are threatened by arch's other moves, but it's more something you can do to get rid of rain before switching in to your designated ground type. if you don't do that, barraskewda can switch in and be a pest.
    also- something i've noticed is that archaludon generally doesn't like dealing with special iron treads. super effective body press doesn't even do that much without stamina boosts, and treads outspeeds even under webs. plus, treads can tera ghost if body press is gonna do a lot of damage. of course, treads isn't doing an insane amount of damage back, but it does 2 shot as long as arch doesn't tera and if you give it volt switch it croaks pelipper too. alternatively, i've seen sets with thunder be used which while awe inspiring and able to one shot pelipper i imagine the set sucks when you're not fighting rain.
    anyway, i honestly like archaludon. it's a new kind of pokemon for rain to use and i'd miss it if it ends up being banned. it is a very frightening pokemon to fight- somewhat reminiscent of baxcalibur and volcarona- though less overbearing, if you ask me. bax and volc can wipe teams but archaludon doesn't have the speed to do that, and unlike volcarona isn't able to heal, weaken enemies, or improve its own bulk. i'm also a fan of electro shot, mainly because i have just always found snowballers fun to play with. skeledirge is kind of similar, but i like the rain reliance archaludon has, and how it's more offensively inclined than dirge.
    i think that archaludon is a pokemon vastly empowered by the presence of tera, and we wouldn't even be having this discussion if it couldn't tera fairy or tera flying on literally anything. that being said, i wouldn't call it the biggest tera abuser in the format and i'd rather be seeing a kingambit or volcarona suspect test. everyone may have their eyes on rain right now but i think that archaludon is much less low impact. i mean, have you ever seen arch wipe teams the way volcarona and kingambit can? in my experience, it heavily dents part of a team and then goes down due to a lack of speed/priority, even if it is very bulky and hard hitting.
    also, favourite bridge? definitely the sydney harbour bridge. it's always dazzling at new year's, and there's plenty of good sights around it. i especially like to admire the kelp that grows near luna park. the rocks and the royal botanic garden are a lovely place to visit as well, i've been planning to go there again recently

    • @big__shell
      @big__shell 5 місяців тому +1

      @@JumbaJumby bro obviously don't if you know that they're not clicking electro shot- but electro shot is such a free move that they *are* going to click electro shot unless there is a direct benefit for using a different move against the current target.
      have you never heard of a double switch before?

    • @JumbaJumby
      @JumbaJumby 5 місяців тому +2

      Ah I understand. Switch to my weather mon if they're clicking Electroshot, don't if they're not. Understood. Predict my opponent's play exactly. Got it. Great plan.
      Not to mention that you aren't directly rewarded for switching a weather mon in. Like okay now you get a free switch to Tusk or Treads, but that's it. If you don't have a ground type he's still getting the spatk buff and firing off the electric move on whatever comes in anyway. You better hope you have something that beats him when he already has +1.
      I'm not saying he's unbeatable, but relying on the opponent to do the equivalent of Torkoal Solarbeam into a rain team is insanity. We all know you're going Pelipper in that case.
      Same applies here. Going into the weather mon is the obvious play, and there's no downside to draco. Something gets chunked. If it's Torkoal, gg.

    • @big__shell
      @big__shell 5 місяців тому +1

      @@JumbaJumby as opposed to not doing that and getting blasted by barraskewda? also, you do realise that the special attack boost triggers no matter what, right? it's not part of the attack, it's part of the charge. that means if the attack is blocked by a ground type or protect, arch still gets the boost.
      electro shot does the same damage as draco while making you more powerful- unless arch has an immediate benefit from using draco instead, it's not likely to use it. and it's *certainly* never clicking flash cannon instantly unless the opponent is already weak, so your example actually falls apart against ninetales.
      double switches are valuable, dude. of course when i say in a comment i'm gonna double switch you say you're gonna predict it because i've already told you i'm double switching but in the context of an actual game it's not that simple. yes, they can predict a double switch, but are they going to? they often don't. and if they do? well, gg, i've been outplayed. *not!* eat this headlong rush, punk. except actually don't, i know they're about to switch into pelipper so i switch again into like kyurem or something i don't really care
      see what i did there? in a comment, i'm making an artificial situation that isn't real. that means i can always just respond with the correct move in my artificial situation. an actual game isn't like that

    Would you ever consider bringing on some high level gen 9 players for this discussion? I feel like the community is largely unaware what actually is used in tournaments and that causes a significant disconnect from why certain mons are looked at compared to others. For example archduraladons win rate and ko rate in the first 3 weeks of SPL significantly overshadows most other mons

  • @VerbalLearning
    @VerbalLearning 5 місяців тому +2

    I understand that Archaludon is a problem in SPL but as far as i can tell it's not causing those some problems on ladder. Which leads to my follow-up question: Why does the ladder have to be affected by the meta of the SPL? Imo the way you play and teambuild in SPL is different enough from the ladder not to mention the people who play SPL vs those who play Ladder might also be very different people with different goals or reasons for playing not to mention that the ladder makes up the vast majority of the playerbase, SPL has to be a small fraction of that. So again i'm left asking myself: Why do the problems of the SPL have to affect the ladder if the problems themselves don't overlap? (in cases where they do overlap then of course you can enforce the same ruling in both places)
    If you want a place for the SPL players to practice you can just make an SPL Tier or format or allow the players to practice against each other in private/custom matches (which i assume Smogon has).

    • @DemonVermin
      @DemonVermin 5 місяців тому +1

      Cause it opens it up to a complex ban. They really don’t want to complex ban because it opens a whole can of worms to what needs to be balanced and despite what people say, they just want to have strict rules to follow.
      For instance, if they ban Electro Shot… then someone can start petitioning to ban Sucker Punch on Kingambit. Ban Thunderclap on Raging Bolt. Ban X, ban Y, ban Z. But now you ban one thing, but the mon is still incredibly strong and starts to dominate after another set of ban waves. Then you need to look at it again and maybe ban another move. Then another for like 20 other mons. It is simpler to just remove one option in the beginning. And I am not slippery sloping… gen 5 had so many complex bans that Excadrill was being used as a Sand Team COUNTER on Rain Teams cause they banned Excadrill + Sand Stream. That is how things get nutty so fast and no one wants a repeat of that fiasco. Baton Pass complex bans also resulted in complex ban PTSD.
      Another reason is that most bans come off of community voting. If the community says Arch is not broken, they can vote for it to stay. People often forget that Smogon tiers are run by fans for fans. If the playerbase (and I mean people that play this seriously to climb) say they want X, they can make it happen.
      They are willing to even mess with the entire system to more closely resemble the cart (body slam not paralysing normals in gen 1 games and the discovery of Sleep Talk mechanics in others).

    One thing this video missed: Archaludon's one defensive weak spot is it's mediocre special defense, which means that Earth Power or Focus Blast should do massive damage to it - except that it always runs assault vest to cover this weakness.
    This video also showed Slowking-G coming into "check" Archaludon by changing the weather with Chilly Reception but you eat at least one electro shot to do this, giving Archaludon essentially a free set-up while also chunking your Slowking-G heavily. Clodsire and Ting-Lu are really the closest thing to a check this guy has, but Clodsire needs to choose between unaware to check Archaludon better or water absorb to be able to deal with Archaludon's teammates. It restricts team building more than many other mons in the meta right now and, at least from my view, should be banned.

    I’d say the iconic bridges in the world are Tower Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, and Charles Bridge (in Prague).
    For bridge connoisseurs, there’s Szechenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest, Helix Bridge in Singapore, the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, the Millau Viaduct in France, Lupu Bridge in Shanghai, the Boniface Bridge in Bruges, or the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado.
    For me personally, I’m about function over form. The Severn Bridge, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, and some of the bridges we’ve already mentioned, great for reducing travel times. But the Oresund Bridge wins for me, for dramatically cutting the land journey between Sweden and the main European peninsula.

    Archaludon is absolutely insane and in my opinion absolutely banworthy. There's just so little counterplay. You mentioned Great Tusk threatening it, but i can't even tell you how many times i have switched a Great Tusk into an Electro Shot just to get outsped and OHKO'd by a +1 draco meteor the next turn (because even though it does 0 damage, it still gives you the +1 SpAt because it is a 2 turn move). The only real check is Clodsire, but even Clodsire isn't an absolute counter. It has to run Unaware to check Archaludon which means it can just freely spam Draco Meteors, which almost 2HKO Clodsire unless you run Max HP and High SpDef, meaning Clodsire has to run a specific set to counter the monstrous bridge. And even then it can't hit it with Toxic, so it has to either go for Yawn or for Base 75 Attack (no EV investment) Earthquakes which doesn't even 2HKO it back and since Archaludon is most often paired with Pelipper and Barraskewda, Pelipper can just come in on an earthquake to threaten huge damage or barraskewda can come in (while that is riskier) and threaten an absolute OHKO, no matter the EVS. In order to kill just that one f*cking Bridge, you have to sacrifice at least one pokemon a lot of the time if not played perfectly which is super annoying and really restricts the meta, which is why i think it is very unhealthy and deserves to be put into Ubers to get 0% usage rate until the end of time.

    Barraskewda and Archaludon are incredibly difficult for stall to check together. Clodsire can check Arch but it's gonna be running unaware, so Skewda gets in and chunks Dondozo.

    I wonder if Archaludon would still be broken even if it had the same BST as Duraludon.
    One thing I was hoping would happen to Archaludon was that it would have the same BST as Duraludon with better distribution of stats. Similar to how Scizor has the same BST as Scyther.
    Unfortunately, Game Freak chose violence and Archaludon has a stupidly high BST that rivals pseudo-legendaries in strength. But as the video showed, Archaludon's BST is the least of our problems with this Pokémon.

      low kick to a classic 0def 204hp archaludon does 50-60% after wich it gets a def boost. the next low kick does not even have a chance of ko-ing. even so if you were to lead meow and they lead anything else the can safely switch into arch as you will most likely not go for low kick and transform into any other type therefore doing even less damage.

    Imo it probably should be banned. It just punishes so many basic strategies and can easily blow massive holes in the enemy team. All it takes is one bad uturn and now it has a defense buff and beats its counters. It has a reliance on rain, but that's not a big deal at all. Even if you whiff the electric move into a groundtype or a protect, you still get the spatk buff. You have to act fast or it scales into absurdity, but it can punish offense mons bigtime with draco. And unless it terras it resists rocks and immune to tspikes.
    It's just a bulky monster that you always feel like a moment away from losing the game if you give it the slightest momentum.

    I think archaludon is another mon that the community would benefit from revealed tera types for. Since dragon steel is such a good defensive typing, it only has 2 weaknesses and they both lose to flying tera - but in reality, it could tera to so many different types just to be neutral, or resistant to just one of the weaknesses. With the combination of electro shot boosting it's offense, stamina boosting it's defense, the tera type it has is just as volatile as kingambit.

      @@watery2211 I said the community would benefit, not that the mon would be perfectly balanced. The same applies to kingambit, the main mon that people want revealed tera for - there are perfect defensive teras for that, but even if you know they are running that tera, you can't guarantee they will tera on any given turn. If you know a gambit is tera fairy, and you have a poison move, you still have to 50 50 since poison don't hit steel.
      We know that reveled teras won't stop good things being good, and broken things being broken. The council also knows that. However, what we can do is make the broken stuff more clear by removing factors that could be clouding our judgement. Sometimes you don't realize something is good or bad until you remove something else that was distracting you. Hence, we go through extraneous testing to ensure the metagame is fun.
      Furthermore, the ladder is just as important as tournament. The vast majority of the community doesn't play in tournament. Thus, ladder games are taken into consideration. Ladder usage is also a factor in determining what gets ranked in which tier. It has importance, as it represents a large part of the playerbase, and thus needs to be factored in when making judgements.
