  • Hey guys, in this video we check out the Gibson Explorer in Antique Natural. This thing plays like butter. I wish I could play as well as this guitar feels. It has a Mahogany Body, Mahogany Neck with a Rosewood Fret-board. The neck is a slim taper neck and it has BurstBucker pickup's in it. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Explorers are some of the easiest to play guitars despite the radical shape...the flat radius and upper fret access makes them conducive to lead playing. Tonally, much like a Les Paul but thicker and still loads of cut...more versatile than people realize. Sounds great here, awesome job!

My son got to play an early 80's Explorer in his HS Jazz band this year (yep Jazz). It was donated over the summer. It was in really rough shape, but he brought it home and I cleaned it up for them. More comfortable than I expected. The only thing I didn't like was that it had zero sustain. Other than that it was really fun.

I remember seeing a Gary Moore interview with Neville Marten from 2004, he starts with a Les Paul but then switches to an Explorer and Neville notes "You've picked that up and immediately played faster". Moore said an Explorer is a versatile guitar, much more than a 1 trick pony, and like the wide flat neck.
I got mine in 1995. It's a 1991 model in tobacco burst, and the rosewood fingerboard has some crazy grain to it. Being 1995, metal was out and grunge was in, so nobody wanted pointy guitars. It was mine for $500 and even came with the original CASE (Explorer cases are huge if you didn't know).

It's a shame that they are more often than not associated with metal players. To me it says so much more about vintage '50s design than 80s metal. as much or more than a Strat, the weird combination of plastics and wood. It's totally Jetsons. If I were a good enough player to play real jazz Id love to blow everyone's mind by using my Explorer. Or better yet, do some country with it.

    • @DocRoc94

I dunno why it being one of the most defining body shapes of a genre of music that ruled the world throughout the 80s-early 90s is “a shame”.

@@DocRoc94 I don't think he was putting down metal, rather saying it's a shame the Explorer wasn't associated with other kinds of music too. Myself, I don't think guitar types should be typecast for specific types of music, which themselves shouldn't be typecast - music is music, if it makes me feel good I like it.

Great video. I have 2 Explorers, black one from 2012 and this 2019 Antique natural. I have to say, both are great guitars, but I really dislike the Burstbucker pickups and those white pickguards. Why Gibson uses all plastic parts black colored and just the biggest one is white?
