Open tunings always sound so much better and I can tell when someone is using it because it just sounds so rich. Thank you, I’m gonna give this a go

This is SO good, Tony! A woman I know who is bored with her playing asked me what she could do to re-inspire herself, and I sent her the link to this video. Learning Open-D saved my guitar life 12 years ago, I'm hoping it will work for her, too!

I have been meaning to try open tuning for years because of exactly what you said, being stuck in a rut. I had no idea it would be this easy to tune and start playing. Not one for being dramatic but I think this honestly just changed my life! Going to leave my guitar in open D and mess around with it whenever the mood takes me! Thank you!

Handy extra tip with these sort of open tunings. If you try barring with one finger across all the strings at either the 5th or 7th fret you'll get the corresponding 4th and 5th chords which can give some extra options when messing about.

I have been playing guitar for a few years now and was never clear about how open tuning worked. So I’m really glad I stumbled upon this post because it seems so much easier than what I thought. I will not set up one of my guitars to be in drop d on a permanent basis and see what develops. Great post! Thank you 👍

Wow! THANK YOU Tony for simplifying this GORGEOUS TUNING & offering a fresh approach - I have now permanently tuned my old Martin to Open D. I always felt a bit limited w/Open D never quite sure where to go with it beyond a few Chords or find the Notes I didn't even know I was searching for!. Tony truly is an incredibly generous and talented Guitarist. Our Community is fortunate to have his Leadership.

Hi Tony, thank you very much for explaining so well. After many years of playing I fell in love with an 25-years old acoustic guitar I bought. Its sound inspires me to play more. One theory I would like to add for all who want to know exactly. In musical theory at 3:17 the notes are a D-major scale D E F# G A B C# D. “Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Do” as you pointed is exactly the Italian names for C-major scale 😉.

If I'm not mistaken, this is just open E tuning, down one full step. So anything you can play in open E (e.g., Gimme Shelter) you can play in open D (but it'll be a full note lower).

Pretty cool! I've just been tuning my guitar standard and sometimes a half step down and for the most part when I'm playing metal on my sixth string I just tune an entire step down from standard tuning which is exactly what korn does on their seven string. I thought that tuning an entire step down was called Open d. I don't read notes or play tablature so I was just mistaken but now I will be tuning to open d and trying that as well

I prefer a modified version, drop tuning the low and high E strings to D, keeping the standard chords, scales, triads and so forth that I'm used to, while adding that nice drop-D enhancement. I suppose that, ultimately, I'm too lazy to have to learn a whole new set of chords and patterns.
But if I were to do it, I would come here first to get started. Great video!
