GSXR 1000 clutch lever switch. Had this very same issue on my K6 track bike some years ago and that was fixed by changing the switch... I saw the same issue on a SV1000 K7.
Sounds like the clutch lever switch indeed. The bike thinks you are pulling in the clutch lever so it lowers the Rev limiter to prevent idiots from revving it to high.
I had the same issue but with the stand switch on my SRAD 750 -98. Apparently the small metal bit that pushed on the switch had been bent through the years and the spring to hold the stand up had got a bit loose so when I revved to 7000 rpm the vibrations got to side stand and cut the power from time to time. But yeah, the clutch switch can also cause the problem.
Measure voltage drop and amperage draw through the rpm range and see if it drops significantly at the cutout rpm. If it drops at that point ( from draw ) it could cut ( hard limit) but re-initialise as soon as voltage demand / load was off and keep doing that. Worth checking anyway. Use a live graph to measure the voltage load. Cheap cowboy check... Take bike battery off, hook a good car battery to bike terminals ( via jump leads ) run bike on dyno up to rpm you are getting the cutout, see if it's still there. If it's cured, buy a new decent bike battery with a good Ah rating. Reasoning... Car batteries are same 12v voltage but can provide more amperage ( voltage flow ). I bought an old cbr that cut out at higher revs. Turned out to be varnished gas and corrosion from the tank that got into the fuel pump/filter and injectors. Had to replace the pump and clean the injectors. It's worked like a charm since, good luck

Sounds like a Secondary injector problem. Over 6k rpm and 70% throttle it should be running on the secondary injectors. Check fuel pump for correct fuel pressure and flow, fuel line to secondary injectors all ok, crank sensor all ok, power to secondary injectors and grounds all ok.
Check the sidestand switch on the GSXR. I noticed the bike doesn’t have a sidestand, but has a stock loom. Typically the sidestand switch is bypassed in this case and the bypass often fails. Best of luck guys!

by the sounds of your high end misfire its probably low fuel pressure have you put a fuel pressure gauge on it to check?(fuel filter trapped hoses duff pump)

I've run rnto that issue a bit with people putting aftermarket levers on gsxr's... It's a total pain in the ass to diagnose as it doesn't make sense to even think about the clutch when you have an engine problem.
Some guy commented that exact same thing as you. That might be it,as I don't see a world where the jhs guys didn't check the voltage or the fuel pump. It must be something small and weird that doesn't happen in most bikes.

Hearing you guys are having problems makes me feel a little better from an experience I had not so long ago.. brought a GSXR 600 K2 for top money for its age.. (on condition it had a CLEAN MOT), had it shortly retested to FIND 12 major fails and an additional 13 minor advisories.. AND ONLY then to find the frame bent as well.. DVLA are taking action against the orginal MOT TEST CENTRE who did the clean MOT and I'm taking the person concerned to the small claim courts. Good luck with the trip guys.. hope ya have lots of fun and adventures for us to enjoy at a later stage.
I guess James get a big pay package for this from that look after saying he'll go bankrupt if he works more on the R1 😂 Either that or he is being forced to do it for free 😂 😂
Some 600 gixxers have side stand switch issues...all have fuel pump filter problems ( possibly injectors as well) good luck can't wait to see both bikes "On Track"
Man, a $2 item driving you crazy! I had a similar experience where a $2 item had me going in circles for an entire summer. It was one o-ring in the carburetor seat on my ninja that had a tiny nick in it. The nick would let fuel pass in the no. 1 cylinder and cause a flooding that would prevent it from starting. I literally went through the bike at least twice a week for three months trying to find the problem. Finally I pulled every part again in the carbs, air box, intakes... an inspected everything with a magnifying glass and then found the nick in the o-ring. Call the local dealership, order the part, installed it, problem solved.
Check the battery terminals?(had a similar issue was a defect from factory not on a gsxr) is it something to do with having no headlights tail lights, bad rectifier ,O2 sensor put a stock exhaust on if there's one around, bad earth probably all been checked Electrical issues are the worst
The problem with the gixxer could be with the fuel strainer in the bottom of the tank with years of gunk and the vacuum lines off the throttle body. Take the original vacuum lines off and use them as a template for the new one. Don't bother trying to clean and reuse any hose or t-junctions, just replace them. Good luck!
Great content. I’ve always entertained thoughts of buying an old sport bike to have as a rat track bike I don’t have to worry about binning. This makes me think twice...
My k1 used to feel like I was hitting the kill switch when I opened it up full throttle. Turned out to be the loom over the radiator had rubbed and arked out at a certain rpm/ vibration Took me a year of frustration to find!
This channel is one of the reasons I have my R1M. Best entertainment I have found on UA-cam so far with the odd fact mixed in. Of to your store to bag myself some 44t merch. Keep the content coming gents. The banter between you pair and the JHS team is priceless 😂. Good luck with the GSXR interested to find out what’s wrong with it 👍
Having never owned a Suzuki, nor have much of a mechanical mind, I've absolutely no idea what's wrong with it, I hope that helps! Good luck though, I'm sure the JHS gang will have it sorted!
My k5 would shut off at about 10k in 3rd ..barrrrpp then bang nothing and come back alive. I bypassed the side stand switch then found local dealer had mistimed it when doing valve clearances. Thank you for the great episodes.
Love the R1 got 1 myself. I have had similar issues too I found that automatic choke was seized. I’ve had the head off mine due to seized spark plug snapping. Had loads of help off a very good friend.
I had a fireblade that used to cut out at High RPM, turned out every time you put the tank down it crimped the fuel hose and starved the bike under high fuel demands, I also changed out the fuel pump just in-case and ran sweet after that.
Issues I had with my K5 trackbike.. Tea bag filter in the petrol pump blocked. (blocked by rust from the inside of the tank.. big flakes of rust in the filter) 2nd issue (after a crash (well 3rd crash)).. and Al's gsxr has been crashed), ignition barrel. Worth popping out the fuel pump and giving the tea bag a clean (and check inside the top of the tank for rust). And then try bypassing the ignition barrel. (you seem to have done everything else electrical) Could be a knackered clutch switch. (if the ecu is constantly switching between the idle map and in gear map ? maybe.. but unlikely ?). Disconnect the clutch switch and see if it makes a difference ? (rev limit is reduced by 500 rpm... and it won't pull as well as it'll be stuck on the idle/neutral map.. rules out the ecu constantly switching maps). Dodgy Side stand bypass wiring ? Don't worry Al, you'll still boss it, the R1 will snap a con rod/break a valve spring/drop a valve. (from experience) Keep up the good work.
Watching you guys ride all the latest greatest bikes makes you REALLY appreciate them... People say Ducatis have a bad reputation for maintenance?? OH MY GAAWWDD !! (owned a 04, R1, it was amazing)
I had an issue with the 2002 Hornet cutting off at 10K. After checking everything else and almost giving up, it turned out to be some relay that was put in the loom between the ECU and the on/off switch. It was there for an aftermarket alarm system that I had removed, but it was taped so much and spliced good, that it looked original, so I didn't suspect. I was so happy after I tested it on the highway the first time and it got all the way to the red line, literally screaming in my helmet.
Completely understand the delay, which as you say isn't worth doing until they're properly "ready" to take the abuse you've got planned. Keep it up lads. The only ones moaning about the delay have clearly never worked on second hand bikes before. It's just the way it goes sometimes. Roll on the next updates........👊😎

I enjoy the content weve all seen bikes on the road vlogging etc etc. Seeing the background work you're putting in to projects is interesting and enjoyable
Sounds like TPS issues on the k5... Wracking my brain thinking about this issue of yours. I've seen EGRs, emission sensors, and idle valves do it on others. My advice would be to back probe your intake sensors and exhaust. Just run it through the revs and use your oscilloscope to look for anything anomalous from there. It should be obvious when you get on it. Good luck!
This. The bike makes good power, and runs fine at other RPMs. My theory is one of the sensors goes corrupt and is sending faulty info back cutting the power. Definitely an electrical issue of some sort but I'm thinking it's unable to register.
got to run through the fuel system, pump and injectors are the next thing. it sounds like it was parked in a swamp with corrosion in the connections, so no expectation it was left standing with any care. keep up the good work, this video was better than the entire bandit/hornet trip (imho)
It's the ignition switch :) (im not joking, I've had a similar problem) Why the shotgun diagnostics??? It suggests no one has a clue what's going on. One run with a scope connected to a few key things and you should have some direction.
Mate, have you checked the stator and or voltage regulator? I had a CBR 954 that kept eating coil packs and turns out the regulator was spiking them because the stator spiked the regulator and burned it out...
What ever you guys do in terms of this trip is fine by me. I'm just happy that you guys will still be able to do it! although, this stuff makes me really nervous about my build that is on the same track as those.... Lots of moneyyyyyy. Cheers from the US
Make sure the fuel line from the tank isn't pinched, or just replace it. With the tank coming up and down so many times over the years, the hose integrity might have perished. Had similar issues on K1 and K4
why, ? I mean it seems the bikes were running and the blokes just sold them as is. I sold my first bike also with much more problems than I knew about since I had no clue
Yes sold as seen you do take your chances... however if that crack went unnoticed and the rim collapsed that could be serious. At what point does conscience kick in. I would like to think the guy didn’t sell it knowing that but who knows...
Check fuel pump and fuel pump lines. Had similar issue on my K4, turned out to be a cracked fuel pump hose inside the tank, when the revs get up there and the draw on the pump increased the pressure caused the crack to open up, only generally happened at 9k revs but sporadically.
A friend of mine had his loom replaced on his k5 under warranty, it was blowing fuses all the time and the loom had rubbed through and was touching the frame up by the seat somewhere.
Taking a day off work today and this popped up. Awesome! Quack.. quack.. Kawasaki.. cough.. cough.. Spent my time rewatching all 9 episodes of Tour de Baron. Next, I will watch all the 24 Hour Challenge vids.
i love your whole series on budget bikes its so great to watch and really informative. I have an idea for the next budget bike series...hyperbikes?? The most famous and iconic motorbike of all time is the one and only Suzuki Hayabusa and the next best thing that beat the top speed of the Busa ..zx14 or the ZZR14. Chris could find a 2006-2008 first series Kawasaki as he likes these bikes and Fagan could find a 2nd generation, Busa. The views would go through the roof with these to bikes and you could settle the score once and for all which overall after a 3-4 day test is the best bike
For the K5 have you checked the diodes on the Alternator/Generator. My old bike would over volt and then the ECU would throw a hissy fit and Limp home because the diodes had blown. However if your battery isn't dying after a night's sleep it probably isn't that. Just a thought
I had a very similar issue on a k4 750. Turned out to be the servo for the butterfly valves. Broken soldered connection. Sometimes the valves opened, sometimes the didn't. Started as an FI fault. Good old peice of cable to short the connections, and I think the faults were c19 and c27. Anyway, dab of solder and she ran strong. Symptoms were almost identical. Hit 7k ish rpm, and it shit the bed, went in to limp mode and wouldn't get past kinda 4 or 5k rpm and blew rather large flames from the exhaust.
This sounds stupid but is the clutch switch working properly? Suzuki NEEDS the clutch switch to work properly to be rideable. It doesn't affect when free revving (neutral/clutch pulled in), only when in gear and moving.
Either that or a fueling issue? Maybe the fuel pump can't keep up under load, or the injectors aren't good?. Also check the charging system. Suzuki's run fucky when the charging system isn't right
The surging sounds like an issue I encountered on my K6 1000. My bike would hit 11ish thousand then start doing that surging/cut out issue you described. I ended up "resolving" this at the track by removing the secondary butterfly valves. They were being activated at that rev range causing the bikes power to violently surge.

I bloody love the BBB, I wish some production company or streaming service would pick you up 👍
If we have to wait a little then so be it, be worth the wait.
Now this makes Monday bearable 👍🏻🇪🇸 looking forward to the rest of the videos
you lads cheer me up no end
As a motorcycle technician, not checking vacuum hoses to start with and just chucking money at it is a rookie mistake
Can I just say that the guys from JHS are the best. They love bikes and finding and sorting problems with their hands, eyes and ears. Proper mechanics.
'...fragrant sent of Lynx Java...' - I spat my tea out! You've obviously bought a couple of wrong'uns so I've bought a T-Shirt to help out a little with the BBB kitty!
Goddamn, how good looking is the old R1?! Would be my choice even if it was stuck with the 130bhp..
I guess James get a big pay package for this from that look after saying he'll go bankrupt if he works more on the R1 😂
Either that or he is being forced to do it for free 😂 😂
Some 600 gixxers have side stand switch issues...all have fuel pump filter problems ( possibly injectors as well) good luck can't wait to see both bikes "On Track"
Loose Connection on the ignition lock through vibration at high RPMs?...
Half the fun of the BBB's is all the lead up to it. With getting the bikes ready for the trip. Always a great watch . Keep it up lads 👍🤙
Have you guys checked the kickstand switch? Sometimes the high revs will cause the kickstand to vibrate and lose contact with the switch.
Keep up the great content. I quite like the fixing up the bikes part👍
Check the battery terminals?(had a similar issue was a defect from factory not on a gsxr) is it something to do with having no headlights tail lights, bad rectifier ,O2 sensor put a stock exhaust on if there's one around, bad earth probably all been checked Electrical issues are the worst
James is gobsmacked about not putting in new pads... Al will regret later 😂
Budget bike with R1M parts seems fair...
To be fair, they're the worst part of an R1M.
iamtherealzombie Haha so true!
Wonder what brakes I should get for my 06 then?!
@@dancarlos1216 you can probably fond some brembo model for it
progste Yes but they are like $6-700. Actually I have R1 forks on a VFR800.
This makes me think twice...
but buying a cheap bike and fixed it that's what make the budget bike battle interesting and funny ! love the concept
All the build vids (at least) should have been introduced with “this video is sponsored by JHS” haha. Love the series!
My k1 used to feel like I was hitting the kill switch when I opened it up full throttle. Turned out to be the loom over the radiator had rubbed and arked out at a certain rpm/ vibration
Took me a year of frustration to find!
Srad Steve good lord. I can not imagine chasing down my own electric issues besides changing a fuse lol.
Top top vlog guys. Hahaha, All
the banter! . Gearing up with my Benidorm bbb stuff for Xmas. Looking forward to more
glad to see the battle is soon to begin guys
Amazed with all of your bike experience. What a a pair of lemons
Got the winter blues? I recommend a strong dose of 44Teeth once a day. Thanks for the content gents.
New member 🤪
Keep the quality coming! Thank you
This channel is one of the reasons I have my R1M.
(blocked by rust from the inside of the tank.. big flakes of rust in the filter)
2nd issue (after a crash (well 3rd crash)).. and Al's gsxr has been crashed), ignition barrel.
Worth popping out the fuel pump and giving the tea bag a clean (and check inside the top of the tank for rust).
And then try bypassing the ignition barrel. (you seem to have done everything else electrical)
Could be a knackered clutch switch.
(from experience)
Keep up the good work.
Oh!!! SHYT!!! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS THANK YOU GUYS
Watching you guys ride all the latest greatest bikes makes you REALLY appreciate them...
People say Ducatis have a bad reputation for maintenance?? OH MY GAAWWDD !!
(owned a 04, R1, it was amazing)
Wow that R1 looks stunning
At that mileage fuel pump or filter. Pressure down. love bike problems because it's such a good feeling when you fix it. Great content. This makes the budget bike battle for me.
Really looking forward to this one. Ive owned an extremely similiar R1
I enjoy the content weve all seen bikes on the road vlogging etc etc. Seeing the background work you're putting in to projects is interesting and enjoyable
I absolutely love James he's a legend ! Id rather it be done once done right and not fanning around good effort lads.
Have you tried switching the Suzuki off and on again?
This is such an epic series! Love you guys!
Cheers from the US
Brilliant as usual.
Make sure the fuel line from the tank isn't pinched, or just replace it. With the tank coming up and down so many times over the years, the hose integrity might have perished. Had similar issues on K1 and K4
About to order a BBB hoodie, love the design on it 👍
Its on its way 😊
I hope the boys who sold you these bikes (especially Russ, if that was even his real name) are feeling some degree of shame.
why, ? I mean it seems the bikes were running and the blokes just sold them as is.
I sold my first bike also with much more problems than I knew about since I had no clue
@@eberbacher007 Well, you don't sell a bike with a broken fucking wheel. That thing probably doesn't even hold air.
Come on mate, a non-running R1 and a track day Gixxer. Both sold at bargain price.
Fuck that. Sold as seen mate. Buyer beware. We all know the score.
Ordered myself a Tee and Hoody from Australia
Want to see this thing keep going!
#teamR1
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Shout out if customs don't steal it. The last thing I bought from the UK got confiscated. It was illegal but still.
You boys are well underrated. Well done.
Great respect for the Mechanic and he’s funny.love to have that knowledge in my brain.
Had something similar on a GSXR 99 turned out to be the fuel rail pressure not being high enough. Worth a look..
Seen so many bike videos but BBB always come out on top!
Is it just me or is the buying, fixing and arguing about the bikes better than the journey on BBB? 😂
Suzuki's run fucky when the charging system isn't right
James and his crew are class!
The surging sounds like an issue I encountered on my K6 1000. My bike would hit 11ish thousand then start doing that surging/cut out issue you described. I ended up "resolving" this at the track by removing the secondary butterfly valves. They were being activated at that rev range causing the bikes power to violently surge.
excellent... these guys at the garage are awesome! James - great! The funny thing is - you would belive this man that he knows realy very well what he is doing - output proves it as well.
