(thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn
Just in the future so you'll now next time catching sand fleas you don't have to dump the sand out .. just run under the water when it rolls back in :)
I use to Love to catch them as a kid....i once brought home a coffee can of them frm the beach and put them Under my Aunts sink for 'safe keeping' ----------> Needless to say, She Reeeeeeally didn't appreciate that after a week or so, hahaha. And it took her another week to find them since the smell permeated everywhere while she was out of town. facts.

I was going to say this but you beat me to it! That’s the purpose of the sand flea net in the first place. Makes it much easier to spot if you have any in your net or not. The water washes away the sand & all that’s left are the fleas. 😊

Finding sand fleas is something we did as kids for fun and for no reason lol
If you walk into the sun glare on the sand just as the wave goes back out, you'll see all the fleas in colonies sticking their heads out, but you have to be quick when you spot them cause they have already spotted you and can feel the vibration of you walking on sand then they'll dig down into the sand super fast an deep. That's also why it's best to hunt for them when the beach is clear of people. But when you spot the colony, get close, run up on them just as the wave goes out and scoop them up! Then dip the scooper in the water to drain out the sand.

When I was a kid living in Florida, I would fish at John's Pass at Treasure Isle Beach, St Pete. Lots of rip currents so, no swimming but tons of sand fleas. Great bait for sure. Your videos always bring back fond memories. Thanks Kelly 🥰
Hi, the reason your scoop is grated instead of a shovel is so you can scoop the sand and rinse it out of the scoop leaving the sand fleas behind. Try it. Makes it easier to get them. P.S. Love you!

Kelly I love that you spend so much time with your dad. I always spent time with my mom she passed when she was only 44 I am grateful for those times with my mom. I’m now 48 I spend as much time as possible with my children and grandchildren because I know how special those memories can be to you later in life.
Thanks for taking time for your Dad Kelly. We give our kids space as they grow, but we miss them a lot. You have a pretty busy life now and I am sure he loves it.

I grew up south Jersey, and we called those things sand crabs. Finding them was easy just with your bare hands. Grab a big handful of wet sand. Put one on top and it will burrow down and tickle your palm. Great fun when I was a kid.

An easy way to spot "sand fleas" when the water is going back you'll see a little V in the sand from thier antennas and they are excellent bait for fish

Yes, you will see the V which happens because they extend their antenna as the surf flows back and forth. If You see a bunch of tiny orange eggs attached to the sand flea on it's under side return them to to the surf for the next generation. On a side note check out for you and the kids in your life. This gos for anyone reading this. Find the book Pagoo by Holling Clancy Holling, l read it as a kid and bought a copy later in my adulthood. May be in the library.

Hii kelly great video. Shout out from Barbados, when we look for sand flea here. We normally use a piece of fish r the head of a fish. Wet it in the sea water n splash that raw scent they come up, we call them cockles here

I've never gone sandflea-collecting before, but I heard you look where the water breaks on the beach and keep your eye out for patches of sand where the shore kinda 'shimmers' while the water is receding. That's patches of sandfleas that are scattering to rebury themselves after the surf recedes.

glad your doing something on sand fleas.. they are good bait too ive heard. Metal detecting is cool too. esp some beaches there in Fla have gold from Spainish Galleons.
Kelly. Sand Fleas are much easier to get if its the right tide. Lots of sand and big wave washout. Just as the waves go almost fully back you can see the sand wiggle.
That little sand piper bird is actually called a SANDERLING < It is already in it's winter plumage and has obviously migrated back down to your area from the far northern states where they spend their spring & summer months ! Pretty cool Birds ! They run in and out with the waves looking for those sand fleas and other bugs ! So I'm guessing you are going to have a LUCKY DAY THERE ! HAPPY HUNTING ! P.S. Fun day! But, then any day on the beach and not behind a desk is fun.
I got to admit I was hoping to see a little squirrel clip.
In San Diego I hunted them for bait. I hunted them on the out going tide. As the water was going out they would be digging down into the sand. At their rear end they have a couple of feelers. You can see them digging down so you knew where to dig. There was no guess work to it. I looked for ones about two to three times the size of the ones you were getting. Once in awhile you would find a soft shell one. The fish really liked them. We called them sand crabs. Same thing you were getting.

Good catch of sand fleas, tell your dad I think the piece of jewelry is glass because he said you can see straight through it. Diamonds have refraction, think about that. Hope that helps, great video .

There used to be a gazillion of those things at Long Beach and Huntington Beaches in So. Cal. when I was a kid. Someone bought me a face mask and I was out in 3 feet of water one time and found a brittle star walking along the bottom and then a live Sand Dollar. Now I live in Nevada - O well.

Kelly really needs to go out with someone who knows how to catch sand fleas. Especially when she pulls out 3 and says she found the mother load. Two years ago Gabe had a sand flea catch, clean, and cook where he caught dozens in one scoop.

I’ve noticed as soon as people start catching pompano (it cools off) the sand fleas are gone. Also you can see where the sand fleas are just by looking at the sand. Next time you guys are up this way and want to catch them let me know. I’ll show you how to find them super easy

Hear hear....that Father/Daughter relationship is So important, especially in the World we live in today. I have an Son and we are Very close, but i've volunteer Coached and Mentored young girls and students in College and i Press on them how important it is to rely on their Dads also. I've always said, 'Mom's will Never be paid enough', but Dads have a way of giving/building a daughter's self confidence in other ways and showing other areas of guidance in life. It takes Both parents...and i can certainly tell Kelly's parents have been 'Spot On'. Any parent that can give their kid the confidence to swim and film sharks from inches away, i Tip my Filson hat to, jus sayn.
