I was 13 years old at this game sitting in that magic corner in the shadow of touchdown Jesus where that 2pointer was slammed into the Irish green grass....greatest game in sports history and the reason (besides being a proud Irish catholic) I still live and die with ND to this day
I'm 61 yrs old. I was 32 when, in 1988, I saw this game live on national TV. Every minute of it was so powerful as I had never felt in any other games. It was truly a battle of the Giants.
I was a newly graduated alum that year and was fortunate enough to actually be in the stands for this one. I actually felt the stadium shake underneath me on that failed 2-point conversion. Thanks for the post!
I was there in the end zone when Pat Tyrell knocked down that pass. Greatest sporting event I have ever attended. CROWD was the loudest in ND history- bar none.
Enjoying life, just turned 21 watching the game with my friends at a bar in Indianapolis, all of us born and raised in northern Indiana. And nothing gave me greater pleasure than watching ND beat up on Florida teams.
Coach Holtz certainly was able to get the most out of his players, and I loved the way he stalked the sidelines like a general. To me, he stands right with Rockne, Leahy and Parseghian. ..Go Irish!
I was twenty years old and watched this game with my father and two uncles who were all rabid Notre Dame fans. Greatest football game I ever had the pleasure to watch. Loved Tony Rice!!
riley 23 - excellent point. I was waiting for someone to bring up Chudzinski's fumbles that the refs missed. One led to a Miami TD before halftime. Irish should have been up 2 TD's at the break.
I was there in the student section with a huge green inflatable shamrock. I watched this video with a smile on my face the whole time! What a thrill it was. Thanks for this tribute! Go Rocket Ismail!
I was at this game. . .still the most incredible game I have ever seen. In the student section, I remember cups flying, hugging people I didn't even know. Just incredible. Hopefully they can get that spirit back in the future. GO IRISH!!
I've been asked many times, what was the greatest game you saw at ND Stadium. As a fan, student, and now an alum from the the class of '74, this was the best at home. The tension pregame everywhere, the game itself, and the victory. WE ARE, ND!
Andre Brown did not catch that last TD on 4th & Goal. Just a great acting job. He rolls over and doesn’t even have the ball and they called it a touchdown.
remember watching this on the one tv station we had in germany (afn-armed forces network). great game and great win for the irish. notre dame-usc was a classic that year as well.
ND is part of my lifeblood in sports, and seeing this game really does the heart well--especially with how bad the team is this year...great to see memories from ND's last national title year in '88
1988 was the last time the Irish won a National Championship, and also the year I was born lol. I think it's time for another Championship victory! GO ND!
Notre Dame All Night Long January 7, 2013. Love us or hate us but their is so much coverage that Notre Dame is playing in the championship game. It's a Networks Dream!!! This will be the most watched Championship Game Ever. ND-24 AL-10
Memories were great ... that year was the last time to see ND play but I moved to Florida and its been great ... I love ya' Lou and I love Brian Kelly too ....Yes #1 again!!!!
Today, I am both a Domer and a Cane. Any school that ends up having me as a student can say goodbye to its successful football program. Go Irish and go Canes! I hope I never have to endure a matchup like this.
This game, and the 1993 game vs Florida State are my 2 favorite ND games of my lifetime. The 2005 USC game would be a favorite if it wasn't for the 'Bush Push'!
I am also a huge Irish fan and I agree - but it was such a great game! Karma would come around though - remember Rocket getting screwed in the Orange Bowl vs. Colorado?
I think the people saying Miami got the benefit of the calls should rewatch their 4th quarter TD at 5:17. I'm pretty sure Andre Brown never caught the ball. If there's replay, maybe the Cleveland Gary call is overturned, but I'm pretty sure the Brown call would have been overturned as well. It's not like the refs totally rigged that game.
@brh044 I hate to burst your bubble but after the game in an interview the ref said that it was indeed a fumble and that the replays after the game proved that it was the right call.ND player George Streeter did if fact knock the ball loose and the Irish recovered! So live with it!!!
ND formally recognizes 11, but there were other years where some group named them as MNC. But I was incorrect about the point differential against Colorado. We beat the Buffs by 15, not 18.
I agree completely that Cleveland Gary did not fumble down at the Notre Dame goal line at the 2:38:17 mark. Bad call by the officials. With instant replay nowadays, that call would have been overturned and Miami would have had a first and goal at the ND goal line. However with at being said, the fact of the matter is that Miami did commit 7 turnovers in this game(4 fumbles/3 interceptions). I don't care who you are or who you play, you will most likely loose if you commit that many turnovers in a single game; especially on the road. The Hurricanes only have themselves to blame for this loss. Most of these turnovers occurred inside Notre Dame territory when the Hurricanes were driving the ball. If Miami doesn't turn the ball over in this game they most likely win in a blowout.
This was probably the greatest Irish team in the schools history. Really! This was one of the greatest football games in history. I personally though Miami's Cleveland Gary knee was down on that play at the one yard line when they called a fumble and the Irish recovered. Nonetheless, the Irish won and eventually wone the National Title. All of the negative comments from the fans comes with the territory.
Actually, I watched this game live. I'm a huge Canes fan. Gary was down. The officials even agree he was down. However, the officials thought it was 4th and goal when it was in fact 4th and 7. Miami should have had 1st and goal. Still, Miami was the favorite and it shouldn't have come down to that play. Notre Dame deserved to win.
@JRFrancisco20088 The bowls were selected and they played who they had to play. Don't whine because the fighting Luther Cambell's were not in the national championship game.
According to "The U" by Billy Corbin last night, he was down. From the video evidence I saw, he was CLEARLY down. It's a shame there was no replay back then or else that call would have clearly been overruled.
The next year Notre Dame beat #1 Colorado in the O.B. by 18 points -- the biggest margin defeat of a #1 team all season. This impressive win cleared the way for the classy, upstanding Hurricanes to be named MNC. p.s. what happened the next year in SB?
@brh044 Baloney. I was standing 4ft from the goal post. Someone from ND swatted his arm and the ball was coming out as he was on his way down. His fingertips were still on the ball when it hit the turf , but he did not have posession. Today's instant replaywouldhave confirmed the call or at the very least, proved inconclusive to overturn the call.
Miami wants to bitch and complain about that so called fumble in the 4th quarter at the Notre Dame Goal Line that cost them a 1st and goal and most likely the game( Yes indeed it was a very bad call). However the Hurricanes had a total of 7 turnovers in this game( 4 fumbles and 3 interceptions). Most of them occurred inside Notre Dame territory. I don't care how talented or good you are; you will lose 99.9/100% of the time when you commit that many mistakes in a game; especially on the road no matter who you are up against. If Miami doesn't commit a single turnover in this game, they win this one rather easily.
you Miami fans need to stop whining. on 2 different Miami touchdown drives Walsh was hit and fumbled and the refs both times incorrectly ruled incomplete passes. that's 14 pts right there you got that were gifts from the refs
Lou to players: "If I catch any of you guys getting in a fight before the game, you will never play a game here at Notre Dame again. After the game, you can fight them in the parking lot............And save Jimmy Johnsons ass for me"
That was to mrchiki23, and this one is too. Speaking of strength of schedules, why don't you take a look at this very 1988 ND's strenght of schedule. Go ahead, google it and take a look, then check the final rankings that year. Then look at the 89 ND schedule (a 1-loss ND team - no one finished undefeated that year) and the final top 25 that year. And the thing is, ND's 93 schedule was no cupcake either. By your own logic, ND's win over a #1 FSU evens out the "horrible" loss to BC.
Are Miami fans seriously complaining about something from over 25 years ago? They ended up having the greatest team in college football history after this anyway.
I'm not a big fan of notre dame but they do have a good program. I just think boosters expectations are a bit high. No program is going to have an 11-1 season every year.
that sure was a great game. how the irish won by surviving miami's two-point conversion, basically getting lucky rather than winning due to something they did. Remember how the next year notre dame got completely trashed by miami. good times
Ted F: Strongly Disagree. The TD that was negated was more important b/c it happened 1st. If UM gets that TD then they *dont need* the miscalled TD by Brown. A short FG would be game winner.
Miami was the true champ that season. ND stole this game from Miami, and then Miami refused to play Miami in the postseason because they know they would've gotten shitted on.
Notre Dame and Miami played a great game. Im sure every blue and gold fan is thanking god there was no replay. Sorry folks end zone fumbles dont count. But if it wasnt called it didnt happen. Jimmy johnson said in the locker room at this game if you keep it close and give these refs a chance your screwed. I am a Miami Hurricane fan and yes back then and even now we are the most hated team around. Im sure if the shoe was reversed we all would be saying the same stuff. I must say i was at the OB
Sorry but you still haven't addressed the points I raised. Great teams win on the road, and the biggest knock on southern teams is that they don't win outside of the road, including Miami. What was their record when they went above the Mason Dixon line? What is it for bama or any of the sec teams? If all those stats are based on playing at/close to home, then it loses some merit. Has nothing to do with bias/hate, just the truth. So what is Miami's record when they travel to, oh lets say, Provo?
SithMage, BC was not up for championship consideration, it's 11-1 vs. 11-1 and one of those teams beat the other. But you know what, go ahead and delude yourself. It's better that way. Have a nice day!
Actually the teams at Oklahoma had far more legal issues than the Canes. Miami's issues came more from the trash talking and self-promotion. Look it up; you'll find fewer legal situations with those teams in the 80s and early 90s than you'd expect.
The Irish that year had beaten #1 #2 and #3 that year no reason for rematches and you have a record like that. Miami at the end of 1988 could not say the same
+Robert Lind Irish haven't done very well lately. In 2016, they went to Austin, TX to play a lousy Texas team led by Charlie Strong and two quarterbacks, Buechelle and Swoops. After 2 OTs, Texas won 50-47. Irish could have still won big if they had stopped at a Whataburger (Texas based fast food restaurant) on their way out of Texas.
@@TheSBleeder Actually they now do in the poll era due to their recent decade long success ('Bama has won 10 (one shared) and Notre Dame is second with 8 I believe)
I remember this game. Notre Dame then chickened out of playing a rematch with Miami in the Fiesta Bowl (even thought they were ranked 1 & 2), opting instead to face West Virginia, who had beaten no one. The Irish knew they got lucky as helll in South Bend and wanted no part of Miami on a neutral field.
@tommerrigan1956 If ND won fair and square then explain to me the fumble that was clearly not a fumble called on miami that would've won the game for them.
Yeah, the "defense didn't show up" game against Boston College and then at home adding to it! That was the biggest embarrassment in Irish history! Even exceeds any losing seasons they've had! '93 was a flatout emotional choke job because they were too high after the FSU win
One of the greatest moments in Notre dame football history!
