A Samurai Fight May Have Looked Like This?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 вер 2024
- The Samurai fought for their warlord or Daimyo and took part in a number of battles, especially in the 'Warring States' Sengoku period in the late 16th and early 17th century. Wearing armor, even though not as heavy as European armor, the Samurai duel with an opponent may not have been as beautifully choreographed as you see in the movies, wearing fashionable kimono and hakama, using sweeping sword technique. Don't you think it would be chaotic, noisy and terrifying?
That's how we saw and felt it when we were filming this meeting of Samurai at the annual Kobudo (old way of martial arts) demonstrations at the Nippon Budokan just before Covid shut down Japan.

Much is written on exactly how the Samurai fought, conducted themselves, etc. How combat really looked was most likely very fast and very brutal. But no, modern man can't know for absolute certainty on how the different houses and clans taught and fought eachother.

realistically speaking, samurais would never use these weapons when fighting against each other like this. They use heavy or blunt weapons like kanabo or otsuchi. Sharp metal on thick armor doesnt do anything to even hurt.
And if that werent the case, they used jiujitsu with each other to the ground and use tanto towards gaps of armor
@@doldemenshubarti8696
Samurai mostly used spears like the ones here instead of the heavy Kanabo. Only the strongest and biggest samurai can wield those bats. The Yari spear ruled the battle field because of it's piercing ablity. It can find gaps easily and in some case poke through metal with enough force.
@@samuraijackoff5354 in battlefield, super heavy armored combatants were rare. They were always personally fit for high mobility and protection and costed fortune in any culture anywhere. Due to this, samurais main preys were less armored and did not need specialized tools. And if you did any kind of reenactment, you will quickly realize armored dogfight goes to the ground with spear or sword unless you have halberd, mace, bat, hammer, axe, or hell, even a greatsword

This is not a performance to simulate combat, this is a technique demonstration.

For the ignorant, this is Yagyu Shingan Ryu which was founded in 1600. The style focused on armored kenjutsu which involved attacking the enemy throigh exposed parts where the armor didn't protect. It wasn't some mindless hacking and slashing style where people imagine its some anime like fight.

Considering that samurai were notorious for collecting heads of fallen enemies, there's a good chance this fallen samurai's head whose perspective we see here, is tied to someone's belt or saddle. That could explain the close view of the action.

It's pretty close as far as the techniques go. This is kata, not randori
Yah since they have armour it usually ends in wrestling getting the upper hand and finishing off with the tanto (dagger) i think thats what its called. Thats why jujitsu is important to the samurais.
@@Wulf-sq9zw actually jujitsu wasn't used as much as people think. It was usually the bow first (later muskets) and then yarijutsu, as seen here. Kenjutsu and tantojutsu were used far less often. Ground fighting was almost never done except in the dojo. Not to say they didn't practice it. Yawara (wrestling) is one of the 18 skills a samurai learned.
That's why this is actually pretty realistic as far as techniques go. It'd be a lot bloodier in reality. And faster. But that's about it.
@@roycehuepers4325 ok neat so it is like knife fighting right tantojutsu i mean. No i get it in the battlefield you do not want yo end up on the ground unless it is one on one where it is easier to access weak point of an armour when in grappling range. Anyways samurais were mostly horse archers i think.
@@Wulf-sq9zw yep. Tanto is a type of Japanese knife. I think it's technically considered a dagger, but I'm not playing a semantics game lol
Early samurai, yeah they were mounted archers. After the Mongolian invasion though they changed to what most people think of by the Sengoku Jidai. Edo period they didn't have wars as much so most fights were street fights
Samurai wore glasses? Their lord offered dental, vision and a great meal plan.
Being in the samurai class had its benefits. Risk getting killed in war, you better give me benefits.
generally accepted that the invention of glasses, understood as the first pair of corrective spectacles was created in Italy sometime between 1268 and 1300
Eye glasses first came to Japan in 1530. Being a Samurai had benefits because lords and the emperor who the samurai worked for wanted their warriors in top shape. So if a Samurai was good with a sword but needed corrective lenses, he'd most likely get them.

They're using real swords and being as careful as possible to not cut eachother up. The art is not how fast they do it but the real attack and counter and control of eachothers weapon.

Their armor was dope...the one suit has those bars running down the biceps and forearms to block a slash...always have been interested in feudal era Japan
Similar bars were worn by men-at-arms and footmen in the west. “Studded leather” in art was actually a series of metal strips fastened to the back of leather or cloth, and some suits had the metal strips worn on the outside. It was commonly called “lames,” if I remember correctly.
Neat bit of convergence there between multiple cultures. Strips of metal are pretty effective at stopping slashes, without being expensive.
@@WisdomThumbs wow! Thanks a lot..always love learning new things on just about any topic. Very interesting.
This armor isn't really feudal era though. It's even earlier.
@@Drownedinblood thanks! I was guessing on the era. Good to know that it's earlier. So much of their way of life in those times are intriguing to me
@Bruh Kearns for me, I go by shoulder armor and size of the helmet. But I'm no historian and afaik older armor got used in sengoku too as sort of ceremonial heirloom.
I love the accuracy the Katana is a side arm 👏
A some carry a Tachi, which is longer and more curved than the uchigatana, with the edge facing down, plus the backup blade (either a kodachi or a wakizashi), that combo is called Handachi, while others wield a daisho combo, which is an uchigatana and a wakizashi, both with the edge facing up.
Since this is a demonstration, the movements are exaggerated to make it easier for the viewer to understand.
Foreigners often get it wrong, but it varies depending on the period. The Sengoku period uses bows and spears because it's a large group versus large group. During the Edo period and the Bakumatsu period, the situation became person-to-person, so swords were mainly used. Bows were not used during the Edo period or Bakumatsu period. Kenjutsu Dojos and many Ryuha(style) were established during the Edo period. Many famous swordsmen were born during the Edo period. Of course, swords were used a lot during hand-to-hand combat during the Sengoku period. Therefore, it is wrong that foreigners often say that samurai do not mainly use swords. During the Edo period and Bakumatsu, swords were mainly used. Shinsengumi is a good example. Four manslayer of the Bakumats are also famous.
I love how you zoom in so hard that we can hardly see anything. Keep it up 👍🏼
Those armor sets are works of art
Still trash
In renaissance Europe, duels became a pantomime of a fight, with both combatants posturing and sometimes touching swords, but it was a show fight where no-one got hurt, but honour was satisfied.

Spears were hit down at the opponent rather than thrust straight. Katana doesn't cut through iron or steel armour so a wakizashi/tanto (ie. dagger) was more likely used to stab into the opponent through the gaps.

In terms of speed yes, but kendo is a very limited and watered down version of Japanese sword fighting.

If u have ever been in a melee armed fight (I’ve fought a few fights at young age with baseball bats , steel bars and batons ), u know that a real fight is very chaotic, u and ur opponent would both be somewhat nervous and u will both be constantly moving, trying to hit each other at a distance. Much respect. Those japanese swordsman were one of the best in the world if not the best. Their sword were folded over 500 times.
Which ironically made them break easier if hit at the wrong angle. Katana fighting is extremely niche because of how isolated Japan has been for most of it's history. It doesn't really compare to European fencing or longsword combat. It's still a very precise and refined art but to say they were the best swordsmen of their time feels flawed in my opinion
