I had been playing steel for nearly 20 years when I moved from California to Nashville. I went to the Musicians Union to get oriented. There was a hand-lettered card posted on the bulletin board there that said, "Steel Guitar lessons. Call Curly (615) xxxxxxx" I called, and when he answered I said, "My name is Marc. Am I speaking to Curly?" "This is him." " Curly CHALKER????" "Yeah. What can I do fer ye?" He was quite a character. I took a few lessons from him, but he was ill and became even sicker, often needing to cancel appointments Shortly thereafter, he died. I was a privilege to know and learn from him
Jimmy and Curly, both smooth as glass! Two super pickers I always admired. Thanks for posting this clip. It brings back such good memories of when country music was COUNTRY!
Jimmy has had a rare sideman career. His talent speaks for itself and he is a well-rounded-do-it-all-kind of guy that has stood the test of time and changing music fads over the years.
Oh how sweet. Jimmy and Curly looks to be about in their 20s. Didn't Curly have his C neck on top? I believe he did but i am sure i will be corrected if not....
Curly was probably late 30s or early 40s on this show, and yes, his C6 neck was on the front. Jimmy was probably a good 10 years younger than Curly and he is till with us. Curly left us 20 years ago near the age of 67 or so.
My meeting Curly for first time I was on the roster at the SSGC in 83. He had no wrinkles it seemed..lol..but i was fortunate enough to meet all my fav steel players and play for them. Curly was a great inspiration in my beginner years. He.s the reason my daddy could not get me off the C neck and practice my E neck. Always my 1st love, the C6..Thanks for the info Gary..!!
@@lisaspears6380 Lisa, I first heard Curly on the "Travis" album in 1962. He was the reason I switched from the guitar to the steel. I have a long list of favorites, but he is still the top of the list. I ordered a new MSA in 1975, and the C6 was on the front(copy cat). still wish I still had that one. Lisa, thank you.
@@walknsteel well you copy cat you..lol.. Chalker was a changer for both of us. that's nice, have you got any C6 recordings I can here? I would like to hear you play if your a Chalker protege..so send me some music Gary..
@@lisaspears6380 Lisa, just because I had a MSA Classic with the necks switched, that's just for my choice of neck location. In the early 80's I did a album session with a Gospel group. One instrumental they did was, "Meeting In The Air." I gave it my best Dr. Chalker style I could. When they mixed it down, I was down as the mixing person didn't like my hero. We went back and made him remix for the final pressing. That was a long time ago. End of story. Thank you.
Naw, Greatful Dead likely tried sounding like them. Remember Jerry Garcia had country & old time music roots. He even played steel on the Crosby, Stills, Nash recording of "Teach Your Children".
RIP Jimmy Capps, The world loves you.
Two of the greatest musicians who ever sat behind an instrument.

Such a pleasure to listen to Chalker play steel! Such a nice man and Great player!
One of my favorite songs to pick to this day. Such a fun song to play. These two played it well as always.
Curly - an utterly unique and devastating style. Incredibly musical and technically killer way of playing a steel guitar.
It doesn't get any better than this.
Jimmy Gilmer and the fireballs sugar shack
Great, just wonderful music. Some of the best Pickers ever.
What a great tribute to the late great Merle Haggard. Merle was picking (in heaven) also. Awesome job
Most every steel player plays like somebody else, but nobody plays like Curly. He had his own world and was the only occupant.
Just loves me some well played country Telecaster. wicked steel player and don't down play that great tight rhythm section.
Man is Chalker amazing👏🔥. So smooth & tasteful.
He's a round peg in a world of square holes, makes his own rules as he plays.
Chalker, a musicians joy, but JIMMY CAPPS , GOD BLESS , HERE IN 2017 STILL HOOKED UP WITH THE FINEST. Stay tuned, kenxqed♫

Very cool. And dig the Ampeg Baby Bass!
Awesome!
Chalker was from another planet musically. Nobody like him..
Why?
Another example of some mighty fine pickin'
That's the sh*t!!!
Nice Tele with the benders.
I think Bigsby made and sold those "benders" as Palm Pedals. I think that's what they called them. Jimmy had a set on his Les Paul too.
Only Curly would play that solo on the C6
orbodman. Nope
Gees you're strict Carla. Ok....MOST people would reach for the E9 neck on that song.

Sweet :)
Curly on C6.
Before Jimmy being promoted to Sheriff, evidently. hehehehehehe

That one time Merle Haggard didn’t show up
