As a retired professional guitarist,I have to say ,the skill involved just working this machine is awesome ! Classical players ,eat your heart out ,you’re just scratching the surface !
Some readers may not know how much talent it takes to play a pedal steel guitar. There are 2 necks with 10 strings each. There are 8 foot pedals , 4 knee pedals, plus a foot operated volume pedal. Other configurations are possible, but i think the one I described is the most popular. At any rate, it is an instrument that, when properly played, produces absolutely beautiful music, such as this demonstrated in this video. I love the steel guitar!
You're right on about that! Dave makes it look easy because he's a pro. I'd be lucky if I could play a guitar by itself let alone what he's busy doing to make that beautiful music.
The sound of a Pedals Steel is an emotional one, when played by an older style musician particularly, and most of the guys shown on GOOGLE are a little more than twelve years old. Today, skill is not looked for, just an overwhelming racket of distorted screeching (i.e. vocals, and a 'same beat' sans rhythm change, sans accent on the drums, OMG It might well be ROBOTS Playing these days where are all the good musicians hiding?Terry Offord
@@terryofford4977 you are so correct. The best musicians show their true colors at live shows. The 'country pop' sound is becoming little more than synthesizers. Great musicians are still around. They don't get the backing of the quick buck same old sound 'country' promoters.
@@terryofford4977 One more quick thought. Attend a live bluegrass show. You'll see skill amd hear harmonies. Note the dobro players--steel with no pedals. But all said and done Dave Hartley is fantastic.
Remember my friends that the Steel Guitar was not invented or developed for the Country Music Genre, but by a Hawaiian and was called the Hawaiian steel guitar. I heard my first steel guitar when I was a young boy many decades ago at a private party somewhere around the mid 1950s somewhere in the California central delta I believe, which had a western band playing. I loved it then and still do even though I am not a fan of modern western music.
Reminds me of the days when musicians made their own music with no computers or synthisizers added. I've been playing music for 50 years now, and that's the way we did it back then. You really had to know your stuff if you wanted to play top notch music. Thanks for the memories.
Wow Dave! Now that is pure country...the way it should be played. Great job taking me back to the days of the old Ryman in Nashville. Thanks for sharing your talent and showing what true country music is.
What A Great Rendition of that song!! I'M Jealous, Jealous, Jealous. I can't play anything that's got more than 4 strings. I JUST LOVE IT!!! This is what's missing in country music today. THAT SOUND
Anyone else in their 70’s listening besides me, we seen Ray Price at Gruen Hall 8 yrs before he passed. Musicians were all from S Tx. And did a wonderful job, most enjoyable evening ❤️
This makes you step back in time that's for sure it dose me. My uncle played the steel flat in the40. 50's an 60's. Thoses are the GREAT SOUNDS OF COUNTRY MUSIC.
no dis respect,..you are what they call badd ass,..you can make that steel talk,..love it,..fallen in love with your playing,..wo the steel country is just not country,...seems to be the heart... thanks David
Thank you so much. You brought many happpy hours into my home with your wonderful music. I am in Jamaica and here its all reggae music . Its a real welcome change. Wish you and other would bring a bit if your music to our country. Thanks so much for or this wonderful steel guitar of solud country. Peace one love.
i have had to turn to listening to specifically Mr. Hartley's version of Crazy Arms to cheer me up this year and "go just one more mile" in so many ways. Other songs of his use similar tricks, but I like how they all work on this one
Gotta say Dave, your playing of the steel guitar is absolutely fantastic !!! Thankyou so much. My mom played a very small one back in the 40's and she did a good job but you'rs is the best I have ever heard. The old classics are awesome to hear, don't ever stop play em' ! Thanks again
I’m curious about the thumbs down people. Is your negative view about country music in general or the skill level of the musician? While I don’t care for the new pop country at all; and even some of the older stuff, I do have the greatest respect for talented musicians. Dave is absolutely an amazing steel player. Ok, off my soap box.
Great Job !! I had a steel player in my band once who played left handed steel and held a gibson guitar on his lap ..he would switch back n forth from playing steel to lead guitar and never missing a note ..he was awesome .. thanks Lou for all your talent in the band :)
I love the way you make this song sound. I never stop listening to it. It has my favorite tempo and my favorite instrument. The best of both worlds. Fantastic Dave.
Hi Dave: Nice touch.. It's the kind of stuff that brings back many memories of playing night-after-night in the bar scenes here in good ole Nova Scotia. during the '60's to the '90's.. Believe it or not, we have Ray and Company visiting us and doing a concert over here this summer.. in Halifax.. What a way to stay young.. woxnerw
wow.. these things are sweet. I dont listen to alot of country music but theres this song that i really like and it has this in it and i was wonderig what it was.. I thought it was just a guitar but this is awesome sounds nice
The magical sounds that are produced by this instrument are all of the obvious ingredients that we all see and hear but the one thing that really catches my ear are the perfectly harmonious chord tones that constantly accompany the lead melody. In other words, if the melody was purely monophonic it would still sound really nice but the ingenious design of this instrument allows the player to deliver upward and downward independent pitch bends of individual strings to keep all the diads and triads perfectly in key, The sound of musical bliss to say the least. Although there are many, This is perhaps one of the finest example of the genius of mankind bridging the gap between the physical word and the human soul. Even my cat temporarily falls in love with me every time i put on a few of Dave's tunes. Dave has really given the world a gift with these videos as did whoever designed the pedal steel guitar and i thank you both for your hard work, You guys deserve every compliment you get and much more. I'd love to find another example of the superb harmonic qualities this instrument can deliver but i doubt i ever will. Dave, I hope your doing well and still generating the sounds from the heavens that we all love!!! Thank you from all of us my brother!!!
Who's here listening in covid? Last year on Dec. 30th I broke my leg, my arm and shattered my wrist. Fast forward 9 months later and I bruised a leg bone...2020 I'm over you.
Sitting outside in 55 degree temps , 3 rums n coke. Listening to best music in world. Besides no show George. 73 yrs old, life is good

David--Yes but you don't play both necks at the same time together unless one has 4 hands and 4 feet and 4 knees...
Well I am 63 I guess I'll never learn it then
I don’t think anyone doubts that after looking at it for the first time.
I absolutely love the pedal steel
If I let myself too deep into the sound, makes me wanna cry
Nice to hear someone keeping real country alive.
the cry of a steel guitar gives a different meaning and feeling to life.
Yes it does!

I saw Ray Price sing this song two years ago in Montreal Quebec Canada in opening for Willie Nelson. It was priceless!
Really like that transition run at 2:02-2:03. Then again enjoy every second of this performance. Great number to sit and play rhythm guitar with.

Nothing sounds better than a pedal steel. Good version of the song too. Not "elevator music", like some instrumentals. Wish I could play!
