You know you're at a high level of ghost obsession when you start thinking about painting your face like Papa or buying a mask, yeah..we've all been through it😄
Seriously! I've made masks for theatre before, and I'm working out the details of how to make myself a custom - sized copy of the Meliora era ghoul mask. I love the current steampunk look, but those were just so sleek. I may or may not have grown a little Copia pencil 'stache at one point too...
I'm pretty sure Tobias wasn't happy with how Opus and Infestissumam mixes sounded in general. Opus was essentially a demo, and Infestissumam had all sorts of delays because they couldn't get the mix right. Meliora is named as such because it means "betterment", or "the persuit of something better", because He felt he finally reached the quality he was looking for all along. This was the first time he was happy enough with the mix, and i think at this time he was way more comfortable with his voice, which meant he could get rid of some of the effects he was "hiding" behind.
Devil Church is a rare stand alone "prelude". Apparently when in pre production for Meliora they had this massive 10 minute long jam that ended up being Cirice AND Devil Church, but they couldn't connect them cohesively for the album. So they just added Devil Church as a stand alone in the album because it was good on its own. Devil Church is now played before Cirice on live shows (for wardrobe change) and as soon as it ends, a keyboard loop in Dm plays indefinitely while the ghouls do a guitar battle. then after that they play Cirice. it's a pretty fun moment.
Devil Church was originally a part of Cirice and the track was over 9 minutes long. Tobias then decided to split them up. Tobias always writes bits and parts and then put them together into songs. He could have a part that's five years old but never fitted anywhere and then suddenly it fits with a new part he's just wrote. If you want to see the drummer of Meliora Ludvig Kennberg in action he just uploaded a playthrough of Majesty on his own UA-cam channel. Don't miss that one.
If there's such thing as a perfect album, Meliora is it , or pretty damn close to it. And watching you react to the entire Ghost discography, speaking as one musician to another, is being an amazing experience! Don't ever stop, and don't try to talk less - your insights are really valuable ones! My own experience is mostly in classical training and ensembles (though I was in a couple of stunningly bad punk bands just for fun, back in the 90's), and I love hearing the perspective of a serious metal musician, picking out the things I might not quite notice, just like I've probably noticed things over the hundreds of times I've listened to these albums that someone without that training might not. I LOVE how Tobias can effortlessly toss time and key changes into otherwise relatively simple, poppy melodies, and make something far more interesting AND more fun than I've found in the last 20 yrs or so. Seeing other musicians appreciate such good, accessible songwriting just feels good, doesn't it? EDIT: Yeah, thanks to Ghost, I went out and bought black lipstick again. It's a rite of passage as a fan. ;)
Experiencing this song live makes it 100x better! Every time the chorus hits and he sings, "Put your hands up to the sky," EVERYONE reaches for the sky. The energy when you get to be there is awesome! It's also cool hearing how Ghost has influenced you as a musician, and now you're getting pulled toward the merch 🤣. I just got a new shirt from their store for Christmas. They have so many awesome designs for their merch. Can't wait for the next reaction! 🤘
I don't mind the chatter at all. Its interesting to hear where you're coming from and how it has impacted you musically. If people can find the time to write entire comments to you about how you talk too much, I feel like an easier solution is for them to tap the right arrow key a couple times if the current conversation doesn't catch their interest, lol. Far less keystrokes that way and everybody wins.
I like how Ghost does so many lyrics that can be understood more than one way. "Put your hands up and reach for the sky, cry for absolution" could be someone in church getting into the service or it could be someone being arrested and wanting to be let go. The get down on your knees part could also be praying or being arrested.
The musicians on the record are different than the ones on tour. But yes recently the ghoul that plays the keytar solo is a ghoulette. Both keyboardist on stage are!
My friend, love your reactions to Ghost! I just discovered them recently, and also instantly fell in love with them. Regarding your approach to guitar soloing after listening to ghost, I was immediately thinking about the David Gilmour effect. The number of notes doesn't matter, the quality and order of the notes is what matters. If you can kill it with five notes, why use more? Another guitar player I adore that you may have not heard of is Steve Rothery of the band Marillion-you should check them out for sure! His soloing is rarely shredding, but amazingly melodic and tasteful.
Ghost brought in Andy Wallace to help mix this album (and Prequelle and Impera). Andy Wallace is a legend (Linkin Park, Nirvana, Slayer, etc..). Ghost hit the Big Leagues with Meliora. As for the mixing choices, I'm guessing it was done for variety, just to avoid a "sameness", but at this point Ghost is working with the best in the business.
This album was my starting point with Ghost. I mainlined them for a couple years. The next two albums don't quite reach this peak for me, but there are great moments. Impera is definitely the stronger of the two, imho. Definitely react to Zenith before moving on! Again, Porcupine Tree. The best drummer playing today, Gavin Harrison. If you're considering keyboards for your band, then Richard Barbieri is the most interesting atmospheric player that I can think of. And Steven Wilson will change your musical worldview.

The last track, ur gona love the, what I call, the satanic choir. Awesome shit. My hound dog howls every single time, thru the whole thing. He doesn't on other songs unless the choir sings.
also: don't listen to people saying you talk to much. it's just the tiktok generation that quickly loses interest in anything that takes longer than 15 seconds to say. and I don't mean to offend anyone, it's just where we are as a species right now. social media is ruining us =/ Can't wait to see you react to Deus In Absentia, because it is a bit of a weird one (it's one of my favorites haha)
@@MrTimothypjr I could not agree more! I'm a musician too, which is a part of why I love Ghost. I WANT to hear another musician talking about what he thinks about each song!

Oh damn, thanks for the heads up! A bunch of good stuff over at Ludvig's channel!
Zappa would call that "conceptual continuity." Ghost is as good. Understand, I LOVE Zappa with everything in me. Tobias is easily that good.
Definitely one of my favorite songs, this song Live is Epic, the crescendo at the end sounds very Journey to me.😂
