  • While most people are in line for Nikons first mirrorless full frame camera, I decided to checkout the ten year old D700 instead. It is an extremely affordable Full Frame camera with pro features. And it definitely holds up by todays standards.

I own a D850, and recently bought a D700. It was my dream camera when it came out in 2008, but I couldn’t afford one at that time. I keep my Nikon 50mm F/1.8 mounted and enjoy all manner of mostly travel photography. Fantastic body! Save your money, folks, all you need is one of these and you’re done.

It’s 2022 and I’m shooting a 14 year old Nikon D700 and carrying My Nikon D7100 since 2014. I consider myself fortunate and well-armed as they say. It was all film before I was able to go digital, I know nothing about photography and I have been shooting all my life so I get to keep learning and growing at 72. I am a real fan of your videos and thank you for all you teach me and others. I am probably the only one out there that likes a bit of noise from the D700, the photos come out more like paintings with it’s wonderful sensor. I was under the impression that Nikon engineers developed it and either Panasonic or maybe Sony produced it but I have not found that identical sensor in the following models. Please correct me. I am disabled after three spinal surgeries that left 8 screws in my back but that’s not going to stop my joy of photography. I would love to someday get a DF but I don’t see that coming (without getting a mortgage on one) in any near future. Good thing I have no “RAGE” and grateful for what I do have. Brad

Bought me a D700 used back in 2013 as my first Full Frame camera..paid $1,300 for it back then. I was skeptical about it becoming soon “outdated” but fast forward 6 years and my D700 is still going strong. It’s carried me through tons of weddings, events, trips, and portrait sessions without any problems. A true tank and I’ve decided to never get rid of it!

On DPReview many years ago, there was a woman who's husband had been terminally ill prior to the birth of their child. As a part of preparing for his passing, he bought her a D700 so she would be able to take the best images of the baby he would not be alive to see. He set it up for her so she wouldn't have to worry about changing things. It has been years, possibly 9. I wonder if they still use this camera, and I marvel at the sentimental legacy that it may have produced.

However, I completely disagree with you concerning the colors. I think the D700 still has the best straight out of camera color output out of ANY Nikon.

be still my heart... I've never regretted buying this camera 9 years ago... I bought a D750 last year for some video capability - much prefer the feel of the D700... and using both almost daily.
( One thing I wish the D750 had in addition to the highlight preserve metering mode, is the reverse - preserve shadow depth - then they could add a 2 picture bracket mode with the 2 in sequence and we'd have a full dynamic range capture suitable for some "hdr" work. As it is, I shoot one on the preserve, then +2.5 to get the range I need)

D700 is the only camera I came across which literally made for pure photography. every time when you use it, it pushes you to capture images which is not easy to take because it doesn't have those fancy features which modern day DSLR have like focus peeking and stuff like that. ones you start using it, it elevates your photography skill set by miles away. I own three D700 (one I bought zero meter 7 years ago and other 2 are used). I ordered a 04th one few days ago because I found it only 1500 shutter counts.

I bought my D700 from a colleague of mine almost 9 years ago. Beautiful camera it is and i still lug it over over the place even on international trips. I typically mount my Nikkor AF 35mm f2 lens with me on long trips to shoot landscape and street photography. Considering it is an 11 year-old design, I simply cannot fault the image and color quality of my D700. The auto-focus and low light performance are more than competent for an old pro DSLR.
I would highly recommend this DSLR to anyone who would like to have an affordable and robust camera to shoot anything. There are some very affordable Nikkor AF lenses on eBay as well......

I traded my D7000 for a D700 last year and I absolutely love that camera! The low dynamic range and resolution is sometimes a bit of a challenge compared to newer models, but it helps you to learn. I use speedlites/softboxes/HDR instead lightroom to brighten things up, I compose every shot right, instead of cropping the hell out of the files. Thanks to 12mp, the RAW files are also damn small and the colors straight out of cam are pretty nice. I also got the MB-D10 with El4 battery for 8fps + 24-70mm G ED and it nails the focus freaking fast! Absolutely awesome for a 10 year old camera!

I purchased my D700 just as the D800 was being released. I still use the D700 for professional fashion, interiors, portraits and art photos. It is solid, heavy and commanding. I have a Nikon F2.8 24-70 on it for most of my work. My printer, who has blown up exceedingly large prints from this camera said he was pleasantly surprised I was using this camera. To me, the colours are rich and somewhat film-like, but that could be my retouching and fine/tuning. I have had my hands on a D750, but I felt it was a downgrade. I think if I was to move to a new camera, it would be the D850, but I have yet to test it. For now, the D700 is my camera of choice.

Yes, I have newer high end Nikon's with greater resolution and slightly faster reacting autofocus, but it still holds up very well. Low light performance was a revelation at the time and is still better than most other cameras. I use it for my press work where reliability and robustness are more important that megapixels and I suspect I will use it until it dies (so far nothing at all has gone wrong).

The image quality in this camera is so historic and ground breaking that it can still hang with the latest and greatest new camera gear you can find. This camera not just carries its own weight, but still competes with higher end cameras to this day. It may lose in megapixels, but its super powers are in Dynamic range and high iso performance upto 6400.

Still my all round most used dslr / camera. Built like a tank. Shot it in a blizzard. Got beer dunked over it many times doing gig photography. Survived days of Rainy season street photography in Tokyo without a plastic cover.
Bought one in 2009. Sold it for a D810 upgrade when that came out. Then I had to sell the d810 to help out with budgeting my international move in mid 2016. But after a few months bought a D700 with grip and extended battery, magnifying ocular and more for JUST 300 bucks which was a steal.
Still using it to date for paid portraiture gigs. Will be buying a d810, but second hand in a month or two for my dense Urbanscapes photography as I didn't think that d850 adds much functionally for my needs over a d810.

@Walker_5 _ The image quality is great. The rendering of colors and optical depth is untouched by their successors! You have to consider that 12MP was state of the art when it was released in 2009 and still more than 4K, but with more quality and bit depth than a 4k video, because you have 260 dpi instead of only 72. You could print very large 10 years ago with it and you still can in 2020 with the files from the same camera.
I recently got a Z6 and I was stunned how well it held up - at least regarding photos, because the D700 doesn't do video at all, but it's a photo camera anyway. The maximum usable ISO on Z6 is 6400 and on the D700 it is 3200 and also 6400 if you shoot black and white and want it to be a bit grainy. And the positive thing here is, that the "noise" on this camera really doesn't look like the noise modern cameras produce, on the D700 it really almost looks like film grain, which is stunning!
It of course depends on your personal needs. I am one of these idiots that never crop, or at least only by a few pixels if something unwanted appeared on the edges of the image the viewfinder didn't show. If you are one of them, 12MP are totally fine. That camera would be more than enough for the vast majority of photographers these days, because everybody is talking about printing but then never actually does. I did and the images look great and tack sharp even on prints of the size of 36 inches for the longest edge of the frame. Everything above gets a bit more diffuse but you also need to get more viewing distance then, and you will not notice a difference if your not a total jerk and go pixel peeping from one inch away.
There is just one thing to consider when you get one used - make sure you can test it before you get it, because older D700 develop a "mood" when it comes to triggering external flashes. Mine has the issue with the infamous "r16" where there is no fix, because it is not a real error code. I think it is a contact issue that sets in after time, but also Nikon Service can't do anything.
If you need a reliable camera for flash work, you should go for a D610 or D710 which you can get for a similar price but they don't have that issue. But they also don't have the big pro level view finder on the other hand - which you don't need when you shoot AF.
Long story long, I professionally shot it for print ads in well known magazines since 2009 up until 2017 and I really just needed to get a new camera because of the flash issue. It is on 700.000 shots now and the service said that there is still no need to replace anything regarding the shutter (but the only provided service is still just the shutter/mirror-unit because they built that one into a lot other models, the rest is pretty unique and not supported anymore), it just runs and runs and runs.

@@Project_2501 State of the art? The Canon 5D Mark II released a few month after the D700 and has 21.1 MP. But I agree, 12 is more than enoug. I mean you can crop more with 21mp, but only if you shot on really low ISO with a sharp lense. Otherwise stuff Like grain, a slightly unsharp picture and stuff will be the bigger problem when croping.

Recently bought one about 3 months ago since I still shoot film and have tons of f mount lenses. I actually use it more than my new Sony A7 for shoots in the great outdoors, excellent for use in rain and snow and occassionaly bashing against trees and rocks while out trekking and climbing, gives great results on my Canon 100S when printed up to A3+. Bought as a knock around camera and has quickly become my goto all rounder with a cheap nikkor 35-70mm f2.8D. I use a cheap no name CF adapter with a Toshiba 32gb flashair wireless SD card which gives me just over 1000 images at full raw + jpeg basic, (I can then send the jpegs to my phone for internet sharing etc.).

Still have two of these in mint condition, use them a lot, and would never consider selling either. One is set up with my 24-70 f/2.8 and the other with my 70-200 f/2.8. My only full frame cams and have never felt that I needed anything else. I also love the fact that the same batteries and battery grip work on my D300s.

It will work with a CF card adapter if you get the 'slimmer' variety. I even used mine with a CF adapter and a WiFi SD card. Lens suggestion - the 80-200mm f/2.8 for under $500.

Michael Rouse I shoot weddings with several other photographers. They are all shooting new camera and lenses, while I walk around with a D700 and 80-200 push-pull. At the end of the night, they are constantly amazed by the image quality and colors.

bought mine 2009 and i`ve no need to change the camera or the brand, the Nikon Creative Lighting System for speedlight photography is awesome - the internal flash is one of the best I`ve ever used if one knows how to handle it and not only an emergency solution, one can use it in Commander mode as well to trigger and regulate external speedlights

I bought a Nikon D700 (complete with battery grip, spare battery, charger, bag, 24-85mm F3.5-4.5 lens) back in Jan 2015.
I still have the camera and I use it as my number 2 camera for portrait, fashion, glamour, nudes, architecture, wildlife, weddings and anything else that I can't think of now.
The camera is great. The image quality and low-light performance is still competitive with modern cameras.
If you can find a well-looked-after used D700, you will have a great camera !!

Upgraded to D750 for professional work and now this become my go to camera for family and personal use. I almost selling it but for the price, this is the best full frame you can get. So I’m keeping it, coz I’m still enjoying using it :)

I bought one last year. I also own a m43 mirroless system. Although big it became a brother to my olympus camera. Compare to olympus mirroless is bigger but image quality is rocks. I compared it with olympus 75mm one of the best olympus m43 lenses and I found the image quality a bit better. Honestly from a 10 years old camera!. Focus system is amazing. Comparing to my olympus em10 is much better especially in low light situation. I look forward to keep this camera for many years)

I've had my D700 for about 3 years and I still use it daily. It's up to over 50k clicks on the shutter with no issues. Brilliant camera, the size and weight (I use a 24-120mm f/4 most of the time) are the only downsides for me.

Best camera I ever used. Mine has a kinda broken mount but I bought a d3 to replace it on the field. It sits next to a d500 and a d800. On a pure raw output you can make a difference but once it has been processed it blends in perfectly. And for those who likes to use old lenses it is very forgiving.

  • @markshirley01

I owned one and would happily use one today, I bought a D750 to replace it for the video capabilities. The D750 is worst built camera I have ever owned the D700 was the best built camera I've owned. If you are just photographing don't hesitate it's still a great full frame camera - a joy to hold and use.

Mattias you should try doing one on a D200. Still one of my all time favorite cameras and still my favorite APS-C camera. Of all the cameras I've bought the D200 is the only one that gave me that Christmas day feeling and so many times it just felt magical using it. I didn't have much money at the time so I had a small CF card and had to shoot jpeg for everything. I want to get another one just to shoot raw.
