  • Is a $4000 camera/dslr from 2008 still relevant today? Are 12 megapixels enough? Just how good is a $500 full frame camera?

    Just purchased my 3rd D700.
I love it and shoot with it more than any other camera I’ve had.
    The one
I just purchased has only 1600 shutter clicks ! It looks brand new.
    What a great great DSLR

I've had a few cameras in my time and bought a D700 on recommendation. I dithered a bit but then took the plunge. As soon as I paid for it I wished I hadn't - I should have used the money for something else. Too late now, it arrived and I took it on a photo-shoot that coincidentally had been arranged just after it arrived. I took some shots and they looked OK on the rear screen, but then... Then I uploaded them and opened them in Lightroom - I was blown away. I'd never seen images like it. They had a dream-like quality. There's a creaminess to them I've never seen before. I'll never sell my D700 and should it go wrong I'll get it repaired or buy another.

Lol that was my exact same reaction when i first got mine. When i looked at the rear screen after taking the photos I thought "shit i think i fell for the hype". Next thing you know I went home, loaded up the files into Lightroom and INSTANTLY all my previously held notions of digital photography cameras were shattered. The way Greens, blues and skin tones just POPS out at you still baffles me. I really wish I had never sold mine. (will get one back soon lol)

I'm happy to hear this. I watched all those a7R IV and EOS R come out but I couldn't bring myself to pay so much plus I didn't want to transfer 150 Mb images. I kept hearing how awseome the D700 is and I ordered one with a 35mm lens. Can't wait!

I have the D700 paired with a 24-70 and this thing is amazing! I also have a 50mm 1.8 and again just out of this world. I've been looking to move to mirrorless namely the Sony A7II but just can't seem to let go of the D700 and I've now decided I won't.

I still regret selling mine. I thought id find better but once i actually had my hands on a 5dmk3 did i realise i made a mistake!. The only step up from a D700/D3 would honestly be a D4 with current prices.

There are certainly more modern and capable cameras out there, and I own a few of them. But to me, they feel more like computers than they do cameras, and have no "soul". I get more joy from simply shooting my D700 than any other digital camera. I sold my first one for something more "modern" and regretted it instantly, so I bought another one.
The really cool thing about the D700 for me is that it provides a digital "home" for my older Nikon lenses. Most of them, even those designed in the days of film, look just great when shot on the D700. That to me is reason enough to own one.

Thank you! I’m a film photographer from the days of the Nikon Ftn. I paid for much of my college shooting weddings with a Rollie, Parties with a Nikon, did some product with a 4X5. One of my favorite cameras was the Pentax 6X7. It was a boat anchor but it was a great camera for my big hands. During the conversion to digital from film, the costs were getting prohibitive and when KODAK, stopped proceeding Kodachrome, I dropped out. The early DSLRs were disappointing, When Nikon released the D7200, I bought one. The D3s and other pro cameras were just to expensive. The D7200 is a truly great camera. I have no complaints what so ever. But with that said, and a fine collection of great older Nikkor lens, and FX, I’ve been longing for a larger camera to fit my big hand, and more heft for stability and full frame. I just won an eBay auction for a D700 with battery grip. I am excited!
I just now saw your video review and you confirmed that my decision was a correct decision. 👍🏻

Bought a low click D700 used end of 2015, still love it. Great built, good AF, lovely big pixel FF sensor, excellent manual focus lens support. I really like the whole package, quality and ergonomics of the camera. I am a hobbyist, but I often pick this body over my other gear - please note that I also have Canon dlsrs, 5D3, 1D3 and 70D. Another fun detail, the D700 pairs very nicely with the film F100, they are practically twins. If you don’t need video it is a steal - more so than a used Canon 5D.

I love the D700. I currently also own a Fuji X-T1, 3 'Fujichrons' and the 18-55 zoom, which I had intended would replace the Nikon. I sold my D700 but came to regret it. The Fuji is in many ways superior, but in my personal opinion the Fuji images just don't look as nice or natural as the D700 images (and that's what it's all about in the end.) I now have another nice D700. Make sure you use good lenses to make the most of that beautiful sensor output. PS. Flash system: despite the improved techology and smaller size of Fuji, a good old D700 and SB-800 are hard to beat when you want a reliable well exposed image in a restaurant or party. I've just re-watched James A's final review D700 - I think He's Right.

I am in my “process” to mirrorless and I am selling my gear. I sold my D750, few lenses and it was a while since I had not used the 700. I used it to take some shoots of the remaining gear and guess what: made the decision of not selling that body. I just think that the current market price for this body has gone too low compared to what this camera can do. I am retaining the body, my nifty fifty and most likely the Nikkor 24-70. I think I will even delay my move to mirrorless...

Great video! My 2 cents: If you are unsure of which "vintage" camera to get: a D3 or D700 (given the fact that both are around the price these days), go for D3. Don't get me wrong, I love my D700 and I won't be parting with any of them, however I have owned both cameras for over 6 years now, and the D3 is superior in handling, weight balance (and I use the D700 with its original grip to get 8 fps and better stability), ISO performance (at least 1/2 or 1 stop less noise) and I know resolution and sensor sensitivity is supposed to be the same, but I think the D3 is more finely tuned, shutter stability (even a very low shutter speeds), dual card slots (which is a significant advantage for professional use), long lasting battery (even second market batteries last al least two o three times as much), AF is milliseconds faster and more accurate (although D700 is very good indeed), it has a more rugged feel and it is recognized as an external drive when connected to any computer (Mac or PC), while I don't know why Nikon decided to omit this function in the D700, and you just can interact with the camera through software (Lightroom, iPhoto, etc.).
The only "advantages" of the D700 is size but not stability (without the grip only 5 fps), AF light (to focus in low light conditions), integrated flash (which for some reason is very slow to fire (at least slower than my old D90). As you see, when the event I need to photograph is relevant I tend to pick up D3 95% of the time. However, for family trips, street photography, or any less demanding context, D700 is gold.

You are right no camera is perfect and the d700 is no different. I should have added this to the video in hindsight but my dislikes are its memory card format (cf cards are annoying and difficult to find when your travelling etc), The weight (i like the weight but i can see someone hating it) and Resolution. 12 megapixels is perfect for portraits/weddings etc for anything that needs to be cropped 12mp can be a bit limiting.
Things to look out for would be rubber peeling, obviously shutter count (eventhough these are known to go well pass the rated shutter life) and any signs of warpin on metal ring of the F mount. Hope i could be of help :)

Honestly for the money you just cant pass up the 50mm f1.8d lens. Its cheap its sharp and it has fairly decent distortion levels across the lens. The f1.8g lens definitely has better bokeh but im not sure if its worth the extra $120+. Hope i could help!

    • @PPISAFETY
      @PPISAFETY 6 років тому +1

Daniel, I own eight different Nikon 50mm lenses, and to be honest, you really can't beat the 50mm 1.8D lens, especially for the price. I've bought them for as little as $60 in like new condition. My 1.8D is just as sharp as my 1.4D when both are set to 1.8, and my 50mm 1.8G is good, but uses a different filter size than most of my other Nikkors, and won't work on my film cameras. So I'd recommend the 50mm 1.8D. And, if something happens to it, you are only out $100!

It's ironic to me, that more males than ever are 'working out', taking Jiu Jitsu, MMA, strutting around the local 7-Eleven in their tank tops, when it's 70 degrees out...……...…………..and yet, so many males complain about how heavy cameras, phones, and watches are. However, I digress...……….unless you have some type of particularly unique specialty application, like shooting underwater, shooting in outer space, billboards, architecture, etc...……………...if you can't get your shot with the D700 and a "D" series lens, then you're not much of a photographer.
I can see where someone would prefer not to carry a D700 all day, every day, for a 10-day vacation however, it's more than fine for you to take selfies in the mirror of your dirty bathroom, or so you can go on, "an adventure" to the next town over, jump out the car, and post that "amazing" photo of you and yo girrrrrrrl doing Yoga.....…..on the beach...…….....at sunrise and posting it to Instagram with a very unique and interesting quote, like, "#couplesgoals", "#winning", or my personal favorite unique and interesting quote, "#livinglifetothefullest." Yup, the D700 is perfect for this type of stuff.

For portrait work D700 is PERFECT. Colour rendition and low light is still amazing today compared to most cameras. For astro photography you might need higher resolution. Honestly it all comes down to what your main requirement is. If portraiture and weddings fill 70% of your photography then i definitely recommend the D700. Just understand that you wont be able to excessively crop with 12mp which is fine for weddings and portraits but wildlife photography etc will be a bit difficult.
