    In this video, I will share a little trick I learned in my experience for beginners that might not know how much liquid white to apply to your canvas. Sometimes you can easily add too much when adding any white color to a white canvas.

    Very helpful Kenny... since I ran into my first Wet-on-Wet disaster two days ago (Canvas is still not dry 🙈🤣) Was my first ever try while following Bob on the TV screen! 😃 So, next time it hopefully will work gettin' these little fluffy clouds done! 😊 ✌️ 🤙 🤘 😎

      Honestly if that ever happens again, take some paper towel or a clean dry brush and try to wipe it down softly and gently. This might get just enough off and leave just enough on. There’s a solution to everything! Keep going though and happy painting! You got this 👊

      Thank you, Gladys! As much I love the thin white medium, always remember that it doesn't necassarily have to always be a white color. Straight up clear oil works well depending on the painting you want to do.

    Hello Kenny. Very good tuturial.
    Also you mentioned, this canvas preparation was good for oil painting. Does this also include acrylic painting?

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  3 роки тому +5

      It can be. Basically if you feel like your canvas can benefit from a coat of gesso, it wouldn’t hurt but usually it depends on the quality and brand of where you get your canvases from. Most brands today already come pre-primed with gesso. When I used to do acrylics, I just went straight to painting right on. In fact, all gesso really is is an acrylic white paint with a few minor additions to help protect the canvas.

    Thank you this is a great video! I do have a question. When I put the gesso on it leaves brush marks how can I prevent this or what am I doing wrong? Yours looks very smooth. Thanks again for the amazing video have a Happy New Year.

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  Рік тому +2

      Hey, Paul! First off let me say thank you for the support and feedback. Now in this video, I’m using a synthetic brush to apply the gesso. Which I don’t use anymore. I would highly recommend a foam brush instead which can even be bought at a dollar store. Also, depending on the brand of gesso you use, some might be thicker or thinner. If it’s too thick, you can mix in some water with it accordingly. This should prevent you from getting those brush marks on your canvas. Let me know how this works out for you. Thanks again and Happy New Year pal 🍻

    Hello Kenny. In the video you mention that for the gesso you use a synthetic brush, but you have to use a natural bristle brush for the painting. I've heard this before but never an explanation. Can you please explain why a synthetic brush wont work for wet on wet?

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  2 роки тому

      Hey, Pat. Thank you for your question. This is more of a loose rule rather than an absolute one. The natural bristles hold up better in a way that you can shape the brush a certain way with the thick paint for certain things you want to paint, like bushes and trees for example. A lot of synthetic brushes hold a different firm or softness in the bristles depending on the make. Some might also not be the correct shape, ex- notice the shape of the synthetic brush in this video for the bristles at the top. One might not be able to duplicate the effect needed in your painting with a brush like that. I am however searching for other brushes that are synthetic and do plan on experimenting with them if I find the right one. I have heard this work for other painters and artists but I do not know of any specific brands or labels that are compatible. I hope this answers your question and thank you.

    I’d wait at least a week for that gray underpainting to dry especially in locations with high humidity! Otherwise over time the oils can crack due to the moist underpainting not having air to dry. Oils don’t dry they oxidize!

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  Рік тому +2

      The humidity was not high at the time I had made this video (long ago). But as this video is a tip for the beginners, I do not use the term of “oxidizing” even though that is what’s happening.

    Do you know how to apply transparent color to a black canvas? I tried Bob's northern lights painting and it came out horribly due to too much crimson and blue in the base coat.

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  2 роки тому

      Well first off I can say that the colors you are using are right at least. Did you use liquid clear as well? And if so, did you apply it before the crimson and blue?

    • @SBJ84
      @SBJ84 2 роки тому

      @@Kennysgreasypaint I used the liquid clear then gently wiped off the excess but I know I used way too much color so I'm trying to figure out the right amount. I used about as much of the crimson as I would the liquid white.

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  2 роки тому

      @@SBJ84 See now that’s very interesting because you only need a thin layer. Just like the liquid white. If you ever think you put on too much, just take a clean dry brush and go over it. It would help tremendously too if I was able to see the picture.

    Can I use spray paint (liquid white)? What are or is there any advantage of using spray or apply?

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  2 роки тому +1

      I never heard of a spray paint version of liquid white. But I would not recommend it, because even as a spray, you probably have to go over your canvas with a brush to ensure a very thin even distribution of paint is applied to the entire canvas. If your canvas is facing up on an easel, the paint will run down and might give you problems when applying your color. You can always make your own liquid white with Titanium White color and Linseed oil with a 50/50 ratio.

    What do you do if get too much liquid white on.

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  2 роки тому +5

      Great question! You can do either one of two things. First, clean and dry your brush and simply go over your canvas with firm strokes all over. Go over the canvas with vertical strokes all the way from top to bottom and all the way from left to right. The brush should pick up any extra liquid white on your canvas and you should be good to go. Secondly, you can also take a paper or shop towel (I recommend the latter), and gently wipe down the excess liquid white off of your canvas. Let me know if this helps and thanks again for your question.

    Liquid white and white gesso is this same ? Or different???

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  2 роки тому

      No not at all. Gesso is an acrylic primer that goes on the canvas first. Most canvases today already come pre primed with gesso. If you apply your own gesso, you have to wait for it to dry before you put liquid white on.

    Why do this ?

    • @Kennysgreasypaint
      @Kennysgreasypaint  2 місяці тому +2

      This specific technique of oil painting depends on your canvas to stay wet the entire time and thick mediums are required. Without the white primed base coat that goes on first, the thick colors will be very difficult to blend.
